Buying sarees in Bangladesh
A saree is a single unstitched length of cloth. Bangladesh weaves its own kinds in their own places: Jamdani around Dhaka, Tangail sarees in Delduar and the wholesale villages of Pathrail and Chandi, silk in Rajshahi, and Benarasi and katan at Mirpur in Dhaka. Retailers, online shops and buyers abroad order them for Eid, Puja and weddings.
The word saree covers a hand-woven 100-count Jamdani and a power-loom copy of its motif on synthetic cloth, so a saree supplier in Bangladesh has to say which it is selling. Roptan sources from verified sellers, writes loom, count, fibre and length into the order, checks weave and origin, and inspects each piece.
How to brief a saree supplier in Bangladesh
- Length and width
- Sarees run from about 4.1 to 8.2 m long and 60 to 120 cm wide. State both in the order, with or without a blouse piece.
- Thread count
- For Jamdani, state the yarn count: it sets the fineness, the weight and the price of the saree.
- Loom
- Pit, semi-automatic Chittaranjan or power loom: name the one you are paying for, and have the seller state it on the invoice.
- Fibre
- Full cotton, half-silk or full silk, the silk type (mulberry, eri or tassar) and the blend in percent.
- Zari
- Real zari (gold or silver thread), imitation zari (usually silver-plated copper wire) or metallic zari (metallised polyester film on a core yarn), for borders and motifs.
Protected names and tests for sarees
- Geographical indications
- Recognised in 2024, the Tangail saree is a geographical indication listed by the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks. The same list carries Jamdani, Rajshahi silk, Sylhet's Manipuri saree and Mirpur's Katan saree.
- UNESCO intangible heritage
- Jamdani weaving was inscribed in 2013 and Tangail saree weaving in 2025. That honours the craft but does not license the name; the GI register does that.
- ISO 1833-1
- Chemical analysis of fibre content. Ask for it when a saree is sold as silk or half-silk; touch and burn tests only hint at the fibre.
- ISO 105-D01 and ISO 105-C06
- Fastness to dry cleaning and washing, plus rubbing (X12) on dark colours. Test by the cleaning method the care label will name.
Lead times and delivery
Hand-woven Jamdani cannot be made overnight and is pre-ordered; its time on the loom grows with count and design. Power-loom and printed sarees move faster. A Pathrail trader says Ramadan sells as many Tangail sarees as the other eleven months together, so book early. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum in the quote.
At Pathrail, sarees usually go carton by carton through transport companies' offices in Tangail to Dhaka, and Jamdani sellers ship by courier. We deliver across Bangladesh, with a packing list by kind, count and colour, the inspection notes and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying sarees for export
A 2019 editorial on EPB findings said Jamdani had buyers in Europe, North America and South Africa, mainly among people from Bangladesh and West Bengal. We quote FOB Chattogram or air freight from Dhaka. UK DCTS and EU Everything But Arms give Bangladesh duty-free access for nearly all goods; LDC graduation is scheduled for 24 November 2026, so check on the quote date. Your broker confirms the customs line, which turns on build and fibre.
Questions buyers ask
How can I tell a hand-woven Jamdani from a machine copy?
Turn it over. A hand-woven Jamdani is neatly finished on the back; cut threads on the reverse mean a machine-made saree. Copies on polyester or nylon are sold as Jamdani in Dhaka's shops, so ask for count, fibre and where it was woven.
What count should a Jamdani be?
It depends on the feel and price you want. Jamdani is woven from about 30 to 120 count; a higher count is a finer, lighter yarn that takes longer on the loom and costs more, and 120-count sarees are usually made only to order.
Is a Rajshahi silk saree always made from Bangladeshi silk?
Not always. Rajshahi silk comes as mulberry, eri or tassar, and domestic silk thread meets barely 10 per cent of national demand, a 2025 report says, so much is imported. Ask for the yarn origin, and a fibre test if you sell it as pure silk.
When should I order sarees for Eid and Puja?
In the quieter months. Jamdani demand peaks around Eid and Puja, and November to January is treated as the off-season, so place handloom orders then. Eid-ul-Fitr 2027 is expected around 9 to 11 March; Roptan confirms the loom slot in the quote.
How soon will I hear back about ethnic wear and sarees?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
