Buying lehenga and bridal wear in Bangladesh

A lehenga is an ankle-length skirt, sold as a set with a blouse (choli) and a dupatta; for weddings the embroidery is heavier, in pearls, silk, sequins and zari. Bridal wear in Bangladesh also means Benarasi and katan sarees from Mirpur's Benarasi Palli, and the sherwani for the groom. Wedding events usually cluster in winter.

A bridal piece is bought for its work, so the embroidery on every bulk piece must match the sample. A lehenga and bridal wear supplier in Bangladesh should settle that before cutting. Roptan sources from verified sellers, writes base cloth, zari type and work into the order, and checks each bulk piece against an approved sample.

Kinds of lehenga and bridal wear

A-line and flared lehengas

A-line is tighter at the waist and flares to the hem; a flared or circular skirt is pleated or layered for volume. Choose them as the core of a bridal and party range.

Mermaid and trail lehengas

A mermaid or fishtail skirt is fitted to the knee, then flares; a trail lehenga adds fabric at the back as a train. Choose them for statement bridal pieces, with a careful fit sample.

Double-flared and paneled lehengas

A layered can-can skirt, or horizontal panels stitched for fullness. Choose them where volume sells; they use more cloth and more finishing than an A-line.

Benarasi and katan bridal sarees

Silk sarees woven densely with zari, the wedding saree of Mirpur's Benarasi Palli in Dhaka. Choose them for brides who wear a saree, and name the zari and base cloth.

Sherwanis

A long coat now well known as a men's wedding outfit. Choose it for the groom's wear beside a bridal line, specified like a lehenga for cloth and work.

How to brief a lehenga and bridal wear supplier in Bangladesh

Skirt cut
A-line, flared, double-flared, mermaid, paneled, straight or trail, with waist, length and the flare or number of panels.
Base cloth
Silk is usually the preferred base; net, georgette, satin, brocade, chiffon and velvet are used too. Name the base for skirt, choli and dupatta separately.
Work
Name each technique (zardozi, aari, gota patti, shisha mirror work, sequins, kundan) and where it sits on skirt, choli and dupatta.
Zari type
Name real, imitation or metallic zari for every part of the work, and the core yarn where it applies.
Can-can and lining
Whether the can-can layer is built in or separate, and the lining cloth for skirt and choli.

Tests and labels for bridal pieces

ISO 105-D01
Colour fastness to dry cleaning with perchloroethylene. Ask for it whenever the label will say dry clean, on the base cloth and on the dyed embroidery thread.
ISO 3758 and 16 CFR Part 423
Care symbols to ISO 3758, and for the US a permanent care label. The label must suit the work, not only the base cloth.
16 CFR Part 1610 for sheer layers
The US burn test exempts plain fabric of 2.6 ounces per square yard (about 88 g/m2) or more, or wholly nylon or polyester; a lighter silk organza or silk net needs a test.
REACH entry 43
For the EU, no azo dyes releasing listed aromatic amines above 30 mg/kg, tested to EN ISO 14362-1 and -3:2017. Ask for a report on each base cloth and the dupatta.

What moves the price of a lehenga or bridal set

  • Work: hand zardozi or aari takes far longer than machine embroidery, so it costs more.
  • Zari: real gold or silver zari costs more than imitation or metallic zari, which exist to cut that cost.
  • Base cloth: silk, still the preferred base, usually costs more than the alternatives.
  • Volume: double-flared, paneled and trail skirts use more cloth, lining and finishing.

Lead times and delivery

Bridal pieces usually take longer than festival wear: hand embroidery has a high time per piece, and Jamdani cloth for bridal work cannot be woven overnight, so it is pre-ordered. The amount of work and the volume of the skirt set the time. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum in the quote.

Worked pieces are packed as you specify, folded with tissue or hung in garment bags, each skirt with its choli and dupatta. We deliver anywhere in Bangladesh with a packing list, the inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying lehenga and bridal wear for export

For bridal shops abroad, we quote FOB Chattogram or air freight from Dhaka. Bangladesh has 0% UK tariffs on 99.8% of products under the DCTS and EU duty-free access under Everything But Arms; with LDC graduation scheduled for 24 November 2026, check both on the quote date. Your broker confirms the customs lines for a set made of mixed fabrics.

What we check for this order

  • Work against sampleWe compare embroidery, zari and stone work on each bulk piece with the signed sample, panel by panel.
  • Zari as orderedWe check that the zari type on the seller's papers matches the order: real, imitation or metallic.
  • Set matchedWe check shade and work across lehenga, choli and dupatta, which must read as one set.
  • Loose workWe check for loose sequins, stones and beads and for pulled threads before packing.

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between real, imitation and metallic zari?

Real zari is fine gold or silver thread. Imitation zari is silver-plated copper wire, made to cut the cost of precious metal. Metallic zari is a slit metallised polyester film wound on a core yarn: light, durable and non-tarnishing. Ask the seller to state the type on the invoice.

Can you supply bridal sarees as well as lehengas?

Yes. Benarasi and katan sarees, famed for weddings, are sold at Mirpur's Benarasi Palli in Dhaka, which sells lehengas too. Mirpur's Katan saree is a listed geographical indication, so the name belongs to sarees from there. State base cloth, zari type and border in the order.

When is the wedding season in Bangladesh?

Winter is the season for wedding events, as Dhaka guides put it, and the wedding season adds to the festival trade beside Pohela Boishakh. Hand-worked bridal pieces take longer than festival wear, so start sampling well before winter. Roptan confirms dates in the quote.

Can I order unstitched lehenga sets?

Yes. Unstitched sets come as embroidered cloth for skirt, blouse and dupatta, and need tailoring after purchase, which a Dhaka guide counts as an added cost. State the length of each piece, and approve the embroidery on the cloth before bulk.

How soon will I hear back about ethnic wear and sarees?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
