Buying ethnic wear and sarees in Bangladesh

Ethnic wear in Bangladesh sells around the two Eids, Pohela Boishakh, Durga Puja and the wedding season. Boutiques and retailers in Dhaka, from shops around New Market to chains, buy salwar kameez, three piece sets and panjabis in bulk for each festival. Handloom sarees come from their own centres: Narayanganj for Jamdani, Tangail for the Tangail saree and Rajshahi for silk.

An ethnic wear supplier in Bangladesh may show a sample that the bulk does not match in fabric, colour or embroidery, or deliver after the festival. Tell us the style, fabric, sizes and the date you sell for. We source from verified sellers, check the pre-production sample and the bulk before it ships, and deliver. You deal with Roptan only.

Ethnic wear and sarees we source

Salwar kameez sets

A long tunic with trousers and a dupatta, sold stitched or as unstitched fabric. Ready-made sets need a size chart and a fit sample; unstitched sets need the fabric length for each piece.

Three piece sets

Three matched pieces, often printed cotton or lawn with embroidery on the top, and among the lines that lead festival sales. Give the fabric for each piece, since the dupatta often differs from the top.

Sarees

Cotton, silk and mixed sarees, handloom or power loom, plain, printed or embroidered. Jamdani, Rajshahi silk and, since April 2024, the Tangail saree are registered geographical indications. Only authorised producers from the named area may use a registered name.

Panjabi and kurta

Long shirts for Eid, Puja and weddings in cotton, linen blends, silk or viscose, plain or embroidered. Sales usually peak before Eid, so state sizes, collar and placket style, and the date goods must reach the shop.

Lehenga and bridal wear

Lehengas, bridal sarees and wedding sets with heavy embroidery, stone or zari work, often on silk or Jamdani fabric, which buyers abroad also use in bridal collections, as the trade reports. Approve the embroidery on a sample first.

Lawn and cotton suits

Printed lawn and cotton suits for summer and Eid, in styles that follow Pakistani and Indian lawn collections. State fibre, GSM, print method (screen, digital or block) and how many pieces form a set.

What to tell an ethnic wear supplier in Bangladesh

Style and design pack
Sketches or photos, measurements, embroidery and print placement, trims and buttons. A reference garment saves rounds of samples.
Fabric for each piece
Fibre (cotton, lawn, viscose, silk, silk-cotton), weight in GSM and width for each piece of the set; the dupatta often differs from the top.
Stitched or unstitched
Ready-to-wear sets need a size chart and grading; unstitched sets need the fabric length for each piece stated in metres.
Embroidery and handwork
Machine or hand embroidery, stone or zari work: each changes time and cost. Approve stitch density and thread colours on a sample.
Colour and fastness
Lab dips or strike-offs for each colour, and colour fastness to washing (ISO 105-C06) and rubbing (ISO 105-X12) for dark and printed fabrics.
Handloom name and origin
If you sell under a name such as Jamdani, Rajshahi silk or Tangail saree, ask where and by whom the goods were woven.
Festival date and quantity
Pieces per style, size and colour, and the date goods must reach your shop, working back from Eid, Puja or Pohela Boishakh.
Packing and labels
Folding, polybags, hangers, size, care and fibre content labels, and carton marks for export.

Certificates, tests and protected names

Geographical Indications of Goods Act 2013
Run by the Department of Patents, Designs and Trademarks, the Act protects registered names such as Jamdani, Rajshahi silk and, since April 2024, the Tangail saree. Goods woven elsewhere must not carry a registered name.
amfori BSCI, Sedex SMETA or WRAP
A social compliance audit for the unit that stitches the order, not expired on the quote date. Export buyers usually ask for one of these.
RMG Sustainability Council (RSC)
Building and fire safety status for garment factories. Ask for it where your order is stitched in a garment unit.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100 or GOTS
Where your market needs them: OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for harmful substances, GOTS for organic fibre. Check the certificate number, scope and expiry.
REACH azo dye limit
For the EU, dyed textiles in contact with skin must not release listed aromatic amines from azo dyes above 30 mg/kg (REACH Annex XVII, entry 43). Ask for a lab report for each lot.
AQL inspection to ISO 2859-1
The bulk is sampled and inspected before packing; AQL 2.5 for major and 4.0 for minor defects are common in apparel.

What moves the price of ethnic wear

  • Fabric: silk, Jamdani and fine handloom cost more than printed cotton, lawn or viscose.
  • Handwork: hand embroidery, stone and zari work take longer than machine embroidery or print.
  • Weaving time: fine Jamdani can take months on the loom against about a week for plain pieces.
  • Pieces and finishing: three pieces, linings, piping and tassels add fabric and time.
  • Order size and timing: small runs per colour and orders placed close to a festival cost more.
  • Tests and certificates: lab tests, certified fabric and audits add cost for export orders.

Lead times and delivery

Lead time depends on fabric, handwork and season. As the trade states, a plain Jamdani usually takes about a week on the loom and fine pieces two to four months; printed and machine-embroidered sets move faster. Retailers usually order Eid stock before Ramadan. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum quantity for each order in the quote.

We deliver across Bangladesh: to boutiques and shops in Dhaka and to retailers in Chattogram, Sylhet and Khulna. Goods are counted by style, size and colour against the order and packed folded or on hangers. You receive a packing list, a delivery note and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying ethnic wear and sarees for export

For buyers abroad we ship FOB Chattogram or by air from Dhaka. Papers include the seller's ERC, commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin, with a REX origin statement for the EU or proof of origin for the UK DCTS. Since 17 May 2025 India has barred Bangladeshi ready-made garments from its land ports and admits them only by sea through Nhava Sheva and Kolkata; ask your customs agent how your goods are classed, and check the rule on the quote date.

What we check for this order

  • Social audit currentamfori BSCI, Sedex SMETA or WRAP for the unit that stitches the order, not expired on the day of the quote.
  • Building and fire safetyRSC status for garment units, and a visit before the first bulk order to any workshop outside it.
  • Origin of handloom goodsWhere goods carry a name such as Jamdani or Tangail saree, where they were woven and whether by an authorised producer.
  • Sample against bulkThe approved pre-production sample kept as the reference, and the bulk inspected to AQL before it is packed.

Questions buyers ask

Can a saree woven elsewhere be sold as Jamdani?

No. Jamdani is a registered geographical indication under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act 2013, and only authorised producers from the named area may use the name, as with Rajshahi silk and the Tangail saree, a registered name since April 2024. Ask where the goods were woven before you label them.

When should I order for Eid or Puja?

For Eid, retailers usually order before Ramadan, since shoppers buy from the start of Ramadan to Eid. Puja sales rise from about ten days before the festival. Eid moves about 11 days earlier each year, so work back from the date in your year and let Roptan confirm the production slot in the quote.

Can you supply unstitched three piece sets?

Yes. Unstitched sets are sold as fabric for the top, bottom and dupatta, usually with the print or embroidery on the top piece. State the fibre and GSM of each piece and the length per piece in metres. We check lengths and print against the approved sample before packing.

What should I check on a three piece sample?

Fabric weight for each piece, colour against the lab dip, embroidery density and finish, measurements against the size chart, and colour fastness on dark or bright prints. Sign the sample you approve; we keep it as the reference and inspect the bulk against it.

Do I need test reports for ethnic wear sold in Europe?

Usually yes. Under REACH, dyed textiles in contact with skin must not release listed aromatic amines from azo dyes above 30 mg/kg, so ask for a lab report for each lot. Many buyers also ask for OEKO-TEX Standard 100 or GOTS, checked by certificate number and expiry.

How soon will I hear back about ethnic wear and sarees?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
