Buying panjabi and kurta in Bangladesh
In Bangladesh the straight-cut kurta is called a panjabi: a long shirt, collarless or with a standing collar, its side seams open at the bottom, falling around the knee. It is usually bought with a pajama for Eid, Puja, weddings and Pohela Boishakh. A March 2026 trade report put 50 to 60 percent of a year's panjabi sales around Ramadan and Eid.
With so much of the year's trade in a few weeks, a panjabi and kurta supplier in Bangladesh has to deliver to sample and on time. Roptan sources from verified sellers, fixes cut, cloth and embroidery on an approved sample, checks the cloth before cutting and inspects the bulk before it ships.
How to brief a panjabi and kurta supplier in Bangladesh
- Cut and length
- Straight, kabuli, slim fit, semi-long or short, with the body length, and whether a matching pajama is part of the order.
- Collar and placket
- Collarless, standing or band collar, the placket length, button count and button type, all fixed on the sample.
- Cloth
- Cotton, khadi, linen, silk or a silk blend, with the blend in percent, and a swatch at the weight you are quoted.
- Slits and pockets
- State how far the side seams stay open, and the number and position of any pockets.
- Embroidery and size chart
- Placement on collar, chest, placket or cuffs and the method, plus your own size chart with chest, length, shoulder and sleeve tolerances.
Tests for panjabi cloth and seams
- ISO 13935-1 and EN ISO 13935-2
- Seam strength by the strip method (Part 1) or the grab method (Part 2, current edition). Ask for it on side seams and at the top of each slit.
- ISO 12945-2
- Pilling, fuzzing and matting by the modified Martindale method. Ask for it on khadi, linen and silk-blend panjabis.
- ISO 5077 and ISO 15487
- Shrinkage after washing and drying, and appearance after home laundering, both run with ISO 6330 procedures. Ask for both on cotton and khadi.
- ISO 105 series and ISO 3758
- Fastness to washing (C06), rubbing (X12), perspiration (E04) and light (B02), and care symbols to ISO 3758 on the label.
Lead times and delivery
Time depends on the cloth, the work and the season. Cotton and khadi come from Narayanganj and Narsingdi and are cut, sewn and finished in Gazipur, so plain cotton panjabis usually move faster than hand-embroidered or silk pieces. Makers plan production by season, so book before the Eid rush. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum in the quote.
We deliver to shops, warehouses and online sellers across Bangladesh; buyers outside Dhaka can receive cartons by courier, as Islampur's wholesale buyers do. Panjabis come packed by size and colour, each pajama with its top, with a packing list, the inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying panjabi and kurta for export
For shops abroad, we quote FOB Chattogram or air freight from Dhaka, with the seller's ERC, a commercial invoice and origin papers. Bangladesh pays 0% UK duty on 99.8% of products under the DCTS and none in the EU under Everything But Arms; with LDC graduation scheduled for 24 November 2026, we check both on the quote date. Build and fibre set the customs line, which your broker confirms.
Questions buyers ask
Is a panjabi the same as a kurta?
Largely. In Bangladesh the straight-cut traditional kurta is called a panjabi. Both are long shirts with side slits in cotton or silk; the kurta is traditionally collarless, though standing collars are now common. Tell us the cut and collar you want and we source to that.
Which cloth suits an Eid panjabi in the heat?
Usually cotton, still the main panjabi cloth: Dhaka shops stocked more cotton panjabis in 2025 because of the heat, and soft linen and khadi were in demand in 2026. Ask for shrinkage and colour fastness tests on the bulk cloth, since cotton panjabis are washed often.
Can you supply matching children's panjabi sets?
Yes. Children's panjabi-pajama sets are sold beside men's and are often more colourful. For a matching line, use one cloth and dye lot for both, send separate men's and children's size charts, and approve a sample of each before bulk.
When should a panjabi order be ready for Eid 2027?
Before Shab-e-Barat. Wholesale buyers arrive from the day after it, and wholesale stays strongest until the 15th to 20th of Ramadan. Eid-ul-Fitr 2027 is expected around 9 to 11 March, after Ramadan from about 8 February. Roptan confirms the production slot in the quote.
How soon will I hear back about ethnic wear and sarees?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
