Buying round FRP cooling towers in Bangladesh

A round FRP cooling tower, which the trade calls a bottle type tower, is an induced draft counterflow unit: a top fan draws air up through the fill while a rotating sprinkler spreads hot water over it. Kinds of round FRP cooling tower

Standard round towers with PVC film fill

The usual build: FRP casing and basin, honeycombed PVC film fill, PVC drift eliminators and a hot dip galvanised steel frame. Choose it for chiller condenser water and process water that stays below about 55 °C.

Round towers for hot process water

The same shell with HIPS or ABS fill in place of PVC, which makers usually offer for water up to about 100 °C. Choose it for moulding machine or furnace water.

Square counterflow models

Makers of round towers usually also build a square counterflow model with fixed non-clogging nozzles in place of the rotating sprinkler, an inspection door and multi-cell layouts. Choose it where you want fixed spray and easier inspection.

How to specify a round FRP cooling tower

Flow, range and approach: State circulating flow in m³ per hour, hot and cold water temperatures and the design wet bulb. Without all of them, two quotes cannot be compared.
Design wet bulb: A wet tower can only bring water towards the air's wet bulb. Take the figure from your consultant: Dhaka's mean relative humidity is about 82 to 83 percent from June to September.
Inlet pressure for the sprinkler: The sprinkler turns on the water's own pressure. State the pump head left at the tower inlet and ask the seller to confirm it turns at your lowest flow.
Make-up water analysis: Send hardness, TDS and iron. The 2009 national survey found about 70 percent of mainly groundwater sources above 0.3 mg/L iron, which fouls fill.
Fan and motor: Usually a direct-drive axial fan with cast aluminium blades, or FRP blades as an option. Ask for a three phase, 50 Hz motor wound for the local supply: some Indian listings give 440 V motors.
Drift loss: State the drift the eliminators must meet as a percentage of circulating flow. Trade figures usually run from about 0.001 to 0.02 percent.

Ratings, tests and water safety

CTI STD-201 certified list: The Cooling Technology Institute certifies the published thermal ratings of a maker's model line. A catalogue TR is not a certified rating, so ask whether this exact model is on CTI's list.

Approach: a cold water temperature closer to the wet bulb needs a larger tower.

What size of round tower do I need for a 100 TR chiller?

More than 100 TR of heat. The tower rejects the chiller's cooling plus the compressor's heat, about 15,000 Btu per hour per chiller ton against 12,000 for a refrigeration ton. Send the condenser water flow and temperatures, and sellers select at your design wet bulb.

Why has the sprinkler on my round tower stopped turning?

Usually because inlet pressure or flow has dropped: the head turns on the water's own force, so anything that cuts pressure at the inlet slows it, and fill the sprinkler no longer reaches stays dry and stops cooling. Measure pressure and flow at the inlet before changing parts, and ask the seller what head the sprinkler needs.

Does a round tower need water treatment?

Yes. As water evaporates the dissolved solids stay behind, and too many cycles of concentration cause scale and corrosion. Groundwater make-up usually tends to scale. The seller should set bleed-off, dosing and biocide from your make-up water analysis.
