Buying FRP and GFRP products in Bangladesh

FRP, fibre reinforced polymer, is glass fibre set in resin. It does not rust, so engineers consider GFRP bars for coastal and water-retaining concrete, and chemical plants, effluent treatment plants, water works and power stations use FRP gratings, tanks, ladders and handrails. Buyers include contractors on coastal projects near Chattogram (Chittagong) and Khulna, factories with ETPs in Gazipur and Narayanganj, and farms and stores fitting FRP roof sheets.

An FRP product supplier in Bangladesh may quote by tonne or metre with no test data; what you need is the right resin and glass for the duty, with tests to prove it. FRP and GFRP products we source

GFRP rebar

Glass fibre bars used in place of steel in concrete exposed to salt or chemicals: jetties, seawalls, drains and tanks. Bars come straight or factory bent and cannot be bent on site. Order to the current edition of ASTM D7957, with the engineer's design.

GFRP rods and stakes

Solid GFRP rods and stakes for plant supports, fencing and greenhouse hoops. They do not rust in wet ground and are light to carry. State diameter, length and colour, and ask for a UV-stable surface for parts left outdoors.

FRP gratings

Panels for walkways, platforms and trench covers in ETPs, chemical plants and wet areas. Moulded gratings have a square mesh; pultruded gratings use parallel bars for longer spans. Choose by span, load and resin, and ask for the load table.

FRP tanks and vessels

Tanks, scrubbers and vessels made by hand lay-up or filament winding in polyester, vinyl ester or epoxy resin. The resin must suit the stored chemical and its temperature. State volume, contents, temperature and whether the tank stands above or below ground.

FRP profiles and ladders

Pultruded angles, channels, I-beams, handrails and ladders for platforms and cable support where steel corrodes or electrical insulation is needed. Ask for the grade under EN 13706, E23 or E17, and UV protection for outdoor use.

FRP sheets and roofing

Flat and corrugated FRP sheets for roof lights, factory and farm roofs and wall lining where steel sheet corrodes. State the profile to match your metal sheets, thickness, light transmission, resin and fire performance, and ask for the seller's test data.

What to tell an FRP product supplier in Bangladesh

Design basis and the engineer
For GFRP rebar, name the design basis, such as ACI CODE-440.11-22, send the drawings and get the project engineer's written approval for GFRP in place of steel.
Bar sizes and the bar schedule
Diameters, lengths and bent shapes, final before ordering. Bends are made in the factory to a minimum bend diameter, not on site.
Resin and chemical duty
Name the chemicals, their concentration and temperature. Polyester, vinyl ester and epoxy resins differ in chemical resistance, so the resin follows the duty.
Load, span and deflection
For gratings and profiles, give the load, span and allowed deflection. Grating load tables are commonly set at a deflection of 1/200 of the span.
Fire performance
Where fire matters, ask for a fire-retardant resin and the test report, for gratings such as a UL 94 V-0 rating or ASTM D635 self-extinguishing result.
Sun and outdoor exposure
Outdoor FRP needs UV stabilisers or a surface veil. Say which parts face direct sun and coastal air.
Sizes, colour and marking
Panel and mesh sizes, colours and profile dimensions, with grade and batch marked on the product for traceability.

Standards and test reports for FRP products

ASTM D7957
The specification for solid round GFRP bars for concrete reinforcement: geometry, tensile properties, modulus, bond, moisture absorption, alkali resistance and traceability. Ask for a test report to the current edition.
ACI CODE-440.11-22
The US building code for structural concrete reinforced with GFRP bars. Where US codes allow GFRP, they limit it, for example to members needing no fire resistance rating and to lower seismic design categories.
EN 13706 for pultruded profiles
Sets marking, test methods, tolerances and minimum properties for pultruded FRP profiles in two grades: E23, the stricter, and E17. Profiles should be marked with grade and material.
BS EN 13121-3 and ASME RTP-1 for tanks
BS EN 13121-3 covers GRP tanks and vessels and made the older BS 4994 obsolescent; ASME RTP-1 covers corrosion-resistant thermoset vessels at low pressure. Ask which the tank is designed to.
Batch test report from an accredited lab
For bar, grating and profiles, a report for each batch that names the standard, the test method and the lab, not one report for every delivery.

What moves the price of FRP products

  • Resin: vinyl ester and epoxy cost more than polyester and give more chemical resistance.
  • Glass content and section: more glass and thicker sections raise weight, strength and price.
  • Process: pultruded and filament-wound parts differ in cost from hand lay-up and moulded parts.
  • Testing: batch tests to ASTM D7957 or EN 13706 add cost and protect the job.
  • Additives: fire-retardant resins, UV veils and special colours add cost.
  • Shapes and freight: factory-bent bars and large tanks cost more to make, pack and transport.

Lead times and delivery

Delivery depends on whether the product is in stock, made to order in Bangladesh or imported, and imports add shipping and customs clearance at Chattogram. Bent GFRP bars are made only after the bar schedule is final, and tanks and vessels are built to order. We do not quote a standard lead time: Roptan confirms dates and any minimum quantity for each order in the quote.

We deliver across Bangladesh, from coastal sites near Chattogram and Mongla to factories in Gazipur and Savar. Bars come bundled and tagged by size and batch; gratings, profiles and tanks are checked against the order on delivery. The seller installs tanks and gratings where agreed. You receive the batch test reports, a delivery note, the warranty where offered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Questions buyers ask

Can GFRP rebar replace steel in my building?

Sometimes, but only with the engineer's design. GFRP does not rust, but it has no yield point and is less stiff than steel, so members are designed differently. US practice designs to ACI CODE-440.11-22 and restricts GFRP where a fire resistance rating is required. Get the project engineer's written approval before ordering.

Does GFRP last forever in seawater?

No material does. GFRP does not corrode like steel in salt and moisture, which is why it is considered for coastal work, but resin and glass can still degrade over decades. ASTM D7957 includes moisture absorption and alkali resistance tests, so ask for those results on the batch you buy.

Moulded or pultruded grating: which suits an ETP?

Moulded grating has a square mesh, carries load in both directions and suits wet, corrosive areas. Pultruded grating uses parallel bars and spans further for the same depth, which suits longer walkways. Choose the resin for the chemicals, and ask for the load table at your span and a fire-retardant grade where needed.

What resin should my FRP tank use?

It depends on what you store and at what temperature. Polyester resins suit water and mild duties, while vinyl ester is chosen for many acids and alkalis. Send the chemical, its concentration and temperature, and the seller confirms the resin against its chemical resistance data before the tank is built.

Can GFRP bars be bent on site?

No. GFRP bars are made with a thermoset resin and cannot be bent once cured. Bent shapes and stirrups are made in the factory to the minimum bend diameter the standard sets, so the bar schedule must be final before ordering. Straight bars can be cut to length on site with the blade the seller recommends.

How soon will I hear back about FRP and GFRP products?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
