Buying counterflow towers in Bangladesh
In a counterflow tower the air enters below the fill and rises straight against water sprayed from pressurised nozzles near the top. The spray breaks the water up well, so heat transfer is efficient, but the pump must supply the spray pressure. Round bottle type towers and square or rectangular cells both work this way. A counterflow tower supplier in Bangladesh should state pump head, noise and drift with the thermal duty.
Roptan has each verified seller quote at the same flow, range, approach and design wet bulb, then checks the inlet pressure the nozzles need against your pump, the noise and drift figures, and whether the rating still holds where the tower will stand. The seller erects and commissions the cells.
How to specify a counterflow tower
- Duty
- Circulating flow in m³ per hour, hot and cold water temperatures and the design wet bulb from your consultant, the same on every enquiry.
- Inlet pressure
- Nozzles and sprinklers need pressure at the tower inlet. State the head your pump has left there; counterflow typically needs more than gravity crossflow.
- Lowest flow
- Counterflow is hard to run at variable water flow. Give your lowest operating flow and ask how each cell's spray covers the fill there.
- Noise limit
- The water's fall beneath the fill typically makes counterflow noisier. Give the limit at your boundary or nearest window and ask for the seller's figure at that distance.
- Make-up water
- About 87 percent of Dhaka's water demand came from groundwater in 2021, and the table falls two to three metres a year. Ask for make-up and blowdown at your duty.
- Drift
- Drift eliminators hold back mist. Ask for the drift figure as a percentage of circulating flow, in writing.
Ratings and tests a counterflow tower supplier in Bangladesh should show
- CTI STD-201
- Certifies a model line's thermal ratings for factory-assembled units in free air. Units behind enclosures that obstruct airflow are excluded, so tell the seller about screen walls.
- CTI ATC-105
- The current edition of CTI's field acceptance code, often needed for towers outside STD-201. A CTI licensed test agent runs it with owner and maker present.
- EN 13741 and EN 14705
- European acceptance tests for series and non-series mechanical draught wet towers; EN 14705 also checks pumping head.
- ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 188-2021
- Minimum Legionella risk management for building water systems, cooling towers included. Ask how the water treatment plan meets it.
Lead times and delivery
No fixed lead time can be given for counterflow towers. Catalogue round towers and square cells in running sizes are usually the quicker route. Field-erected towers, imported cells cleared at Chattogram, roof lifts, extra cells and a field acceptance test all add time. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum order in the quote.
Roptan delivers the tower or cells to your site anywhere in Bangladesh. The seller sets them level, connects the header, checks that every nozzle sprays and the sprinkler turns, aligns the fan and records a test run with flow, temperatures and fan current. Handover includes drawings, the selection at your conditions, the O&M manual, the warranty and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Questions buyers ask
Why does a counterflow tower cost more to run?
Mostly the pump. Water has to reach the nozzles under pressure instead of falling from a basin, so pump head is usually higher than for crossflow. Over years that adds to the power bill, so compare quotes on fan power and pump head together, not on the tower alone.
Can a counterflow tower run at half flow?
Not well, as a rule. Spray nozzles and rotating sprinklers need enough flow and pressure to cover the fill, and dry patches stop cooling. With several cells, ask the seller how the cells should be staged at part flow so each running cell keeps its spray pressure.
Will a screen wall around a rooftop tower change its rating?
It can. CTI's certification covers factory-assembled units in unobstructed air, and units behind enclosures that block airflow fall outside it. Tell sellers about any wall or louvre, and agree a field acceptance test if the tower will be enclosed.
Is a counterflow tower noisier than crossflow?
Typically, yes, because water falls a greater height beneath the fill into the basin. Ask each seller for the sound level at your boundary distance, in writing, and compare the quotes at the same distance and the same duty.
How soon will I hear back about cooling towers?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the capacity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
