Buying cooling tower fans in Bangladesh

The fan moves air through a mechanical draft tower. In an induced draft tower it sits at the outlet on top and draws air through; in a forced draft tower it pushes air in at the inlet. Most are axial fans with cast aluminium or FRP blades. A cooling tower fan supplier in Bangladesh sells them with the tower, as replacements and as drive upgrades.

A wrong fan costs airflow or burns power, and a poorly balanced one shakes the structure. Roptan has each verified seller match the fan to your tower's duty, then checks blade and hub materials, the motor nameplate against the local supply, and the balance and vibration papers. The seller fits and commissions it.

Kinds of cooling tower fan

Cast aluminium blade fans

Cast aluminium blades and hub, usually the standard fan on round FRP towers. Choose it when replacing like for like on a standard tower.

FRP blade fans

FRP blades on a hot dip galvanised steel or aluminium alloy hub, usually offered as an option. Ask the seller which suits your tower and air.

Direct-drive fans

The fan sits on the motor shaft, which avoids belt and gearbox upkeep. Choose it for new towers and for converting older ones.

Geared fan drives

A gearbox and drive shaft between motor and fan, usually found on older towers. Choose a matching gearbox and shaft as spares, or ask about conversion to direct drive.

Fans with variable speed drives

A variable frequency drive slows the motor when the load or the weather allows. Choose it for towers that run well below design for long periods.

How to specify a cooling tower fan

Tower and position
Give the tower model and type, induced or forced draft, the fan diameter, blade count and hub, and a photo of the fan deck.
Airflow and power
Ask for the fan's duty point and absorbed power from the tower's design. A CTI field acceptance test records fan power, so the figure can be checked.
Motor enclosure
Ask for a totally enclosed motor to IP55: dust protected and protected against water jets, which suits a hot, humid fan deck.
Supply voltage
Bangladesh supplies three phase at 50 Hz. Confirm the motor winding before the order, since some Indian listings give 440 V motors.
Speed control
Fan power falls steeply with speed, roughly with its cube. If you want a variable frequency drive, ask how the seller handles the harmonics it adds.
Balance and vibration
Ask for the balance grade to ISO 21940-11 and vibration limits to ISO 14694, with a test report for the fan supplied.

Tests and papers for a cooling tower fan

ISO 5801
Performance testing of fans using standardised airways. Use the current edition when a seller quotes tested airflow and pressure.
ISO 14694
Balance quality and vibration levels for industrial fans, limited to fans under 300 kW. Ask which category and limits apply.
ISO 21940-11
Balancing procedures and tolerances for rigid rotors, which replaced the older rigid rotor balance standard. Ask for the grade achieved.
IEC 60529
The IP code. IP55 means dust protected and protected against water jets, the enclosure makers describe for motors in a hot, humid tower.

What moves the price of a cooling tower fan

  • Blades and hub: cast aluminium, or FRP blades on a galvanised steel or alloy hub.
  • Drive: direct drive, or a gearbox and drive shaft for an older tower.
  • Motor: rating, enclosure and a winding for the local supply.
  • Speed control: a variable frequency drive and any harmonic filter.
  • Papers: performance, balance and vibration test reports.

Lead times and delivery

No fixed lead time can be given for fans. A standard fan in a running size, with a motor wound for the local supply, is usually the quicker route. Fans matched to an older tower, gearboxes and drive shafts, imported parts cleared at Chattogram, rewinding for a different voltage and drives with filters take longer. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum order in the quote.

Roptan delivers the fan, motor or drive to your site anywhere in Bangladesh. If fitting is ordered, the seller mounts the fan, sets the blades as the tower maker specifies, checks rotation and motor current, and records vibration on a test run. You receive the motor and fan data sheets, the balance report, the O&M manual, the warranty and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Match to the towerWe check the fan diameter, blade count, hub and drive against your tower's nameplate or the old fan.
  • Motor nameplateWe confirm three phase, 50 Hz, the local supply voltage and an IP55 enclosure before the order ships.
  • Balance reportWe ask for the balance and vibration test report for the fan supplied, not a type sheet.
  • Power figureWe check the quote gives absorbed fan power at the duty point, so a test run can be compared with it.

Questions buyers ask

Can a gear-driven tower fan be converted to direct drive?

Usually, yes. Some tower makers offer to convert geared towers to direct drive, which removes the gearbox and drive shaft upkeep. Send the tower details and a photo of the fan deck, and the seller checks whether the motor and fan fit the existing structure.

Does a variable speed drive save power on a tower fan?

Usually, at part load. Fan power falls roughly with the cube of speed, so a fan at reduced speed draws much less. The drive adds harmonics to your supply, so ask the seller how they are handled, and confirm the motor suits drive operation.

Aluminium or FRP blades?

Cast aluminium blades are usually the standard on round towers, and FRP blades on a galvanised steel or alloy hub the common option. Ask the seller which suits your tower's duty and site, and ask for the balance report either way.

What do you need to source a replacement fan?

The tower nameplate, the fan diameter, blade count, blade material and hub, the motor kW, speed and voltage, the drive type and a photo of the fan deck. With those, we ask verified sellers for a fan that fits without changes to the structure.

How soon will I hear back about cooling towers?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the capacity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
