Buying rice bran oil in Bangladesh
Rice bran oil comes from the bran that mills strip from rice, and is refined into a mild frying oil. Bran does not give up its oil to an expeller press, so in practice the oil is solvent-extracted. Bangladesh has plenty of bran: a 2024 review projected around 4.87 million tonnes for 2023-24 and said traditional uses, poultry feed and landfill, still prevail.
A rice bran oil exporter in Bangladesh depends on fresh bran, because bran left too long turns rancid and its oil turns acid. Roptan sources from verified refineries, asks how soon after milling the bran was stabilised, and has acidity, peroxide value and vitamin A tested on your lot.
What to tell a rice bran oil exporter in Bangladesh
- Free fatty acid
- Acid value to ISO 660:2020, with the acid the result is expressed as. Codex's figure for refined oil is an acid value of 0.6 mg KOH/g.
- Peroxide value and vitamin A
- Peroxide value to ISO 3960:2017, up to 10 meq/kg for refined oil under Codex. A Bangladeshi study found vitamin A tended to fall as peroxide value rose: ask for both together.
- Gamma-oryzanol
- A minimum percentage and the test method, if you are paying for it. Typical figures are a guide, not a guarantee.
- Identity
- A fatty acid profile to ISO 12966-4:2026, with iodine value (90 to 115 in Codex) and saponification value (180 to 199 mg KOH/g). Values well outside these can point to a blend.
- Colour and moisture
- Lovibond colour to ISO 15305 with red and yellow limits, and moisture to ISO 662:2016, typically 0.1 to 0.15% in refined oil.
- Pack
- Bottles, jerrycans, new food-grade drums or a flexitank, with the refinery's batch number on the papers.
Standards and tests for rice bran oil
- BDS 1886 and the vitamin A level
- BSTI's 2021 mandatory list names fortified edible rice bran oil under BDS 1886, at 1.5 to 3.0 mg of vitamin A per 100 g (15 to 30 ppm); ask whether your lot is fortified.
- Regulation (EU) 2023/915
- For EU lots: glycidyl esters up to 1,000 µg/kg, benzo(a)pyrene up to 2.0 µg/kg, and four PAHs together up to 10.0 µg/kg.
- ISO 18363-1:2015
- The GC/MS method for 3-MCPD and glycidyl esters, contaminants that form in refining. Ask for it on refined lots bound for the EU.
Lead times and delivery
No typical lead time can be given for rice bran oil. Stock oil in standard packs moves fastest; oil refined to your acidity or oryzanol figure waits for a production run; private label bottles wait for labels; and EU contaminant tests add laboratory time. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum order in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh we deliver in bottles, jerrycans or drums to food plants, caterers and shops. Keep the oil cool and out of light, since oxidation raises the peroxide value and can destroy added vitamin A. Each lot comes with its acidity, peroxide and vitamin A results, the refinery batch and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying rice bran oil for export
With no HS line of its own, rice bran oil usually ships under 1515.90, other fixed vegetable oils. For the EU, ask for glycidyl ester, 3-MCPD and PAH results on the lot. We quote FOB Chattogram in drums, a flexitank or bottles. Tell us whether your market wants vitamin A added. Halal certification can come from BSTI or the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh.
Questions buyers ask
Is cold-pressed rice bran oil real?
Treat the claim with care. Rice bran does not release its oil to an expeller, which is why rice bran oil is solvent-extracted and then refined. If a seller offers cold-pressed oil, ask how it was made and compare its acidity with refined oil.
How fresh does the bran need to be?
Fresh enough that rancidity has not set in. Bran's own enzymes drive hydrolytic and oxidative rancidity after milling, which is why crude rice bran oil typically carries 5 to 15% free fatty acid. Ask how quickly the bran is stabilised and extracted.
Why ask for a vitamin A result on drum oil?
Because bulk oil is where fortification falls short. BSTI tests from 2018 to June 2021 found vitamin A in 87% of bottled edible oil but only 52.67% of drum oil. If your lot is sold as fortified, ask for a result on the lot itself and the refinery batch on the papers.
What is gamma-oryzanol?
A mixture of steryl and triterpenyl esters of ferulic acid found in rice bran oil, at around 2% of the crude oil. Refining usually lowers it. If you pay for a stated minimum, write the figure and the test method into the contract.
How soon will I hear back about edible oils?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
