Buying refined soybean oil in Bangladesh

Bangladesh refines most of its soybean oil from imported crude: 690,000 tonnes of crude soybean oil arrived in FY2025-26, and a few groups also crush imported seed. Households favour soybean oil and buy it bottled, yet a 2017 study found about 65% of all edible oil sold from drums. Refined soybean oil sold in Bangladesh must be fortified with vitamin A.

A refined soybean oil exporter in Bangladesh sells mostly at home, because the country exports little soybean oil. Roptan sources from verified refineries, has vitamin A, iodine value and freshness tested on your lot, and quotes export lots against EU rules.

Kinds of refined soybean oil

Bottled fortified soybean oil

Refined, fortified oil in PET bottles for shops and homes. In BSTI's tests bottled oil carried vitamin A more often than drum oil; choose it where labels and traceability matter.

Drum and bulk soybean oil

The same oil sold loose to caterers and food businesses. Vitamin A falls short most often here, and reused drums are reported, so ask for a lot result and new drums.

Oil from crushed imported seed

A few groups crush imported seed from Brazil and the United States rather than refine imported crude. Ask which route your lot took if the beans must be traced.

Degummed (crude) soybean oil

Oil with gums removed but not fully refined still counts as crude, HS 1507.10, and loses the EU allergen exemption.

What to tell a refined soybean oil exporter in Bangladesh

Acidity and peroxide
Free fatty acid usually under 0.30%, as BSTI's figures are reported, and peroxide value up to 10 meq/kg, to ISO 660:2020 and ISO 3960:2017.
Identity
Iodine value to ISO 3961:2024 within Codex's 124 to 139, saponification value 189 to 195 mg KOH/g, and a fatty acid profile to ISO 12966-4:2026.
Vitamin A
1.5 to 3.0 mg per 100 g (15 to 30 ppm), as retinol palmitate or acetate, with peroxide value on the same certificate.
Trans fat
Deodorisation can leave about 0.4 to 2.1% trans fat, close to the 2 g per 100 g of fat limit, so ask for a result.
Pack and papers
PET bottles, jerrycans, new food-grade drums or a flexitank, with the refinery name and batch on the documents.

Laws, limits and EU rules for refined soybean oil

Vitamin A Act 2013 and BDS 1769
The Act names soyabean oil, bars selling it unfortified and bars importing refined oil that is not fortified. BSTI's 2021 list sets fortified soybean oil under BDS 1769.
SRO 332-Law/2021
Bangladesh's limit of 2 g trans fat per 100 g of fat for sale, storage and import, in force since 31 December 2022, covers refined soybean oil.
Regulation (EU) 2023/915
For EU lots: 3-MCPD esters up to 1,250 µg/kg for soybean oil and glycidyl esters up to 1,000 µg/kg.
Regulation (EU) 2023/1115
The deforestation rule covers soybean oil, HS 1507. The Commission now gives 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators and 30 June 2027 for small ones; check the current dates.

What moves the price of refined soybean oil

  • Crude oil: nearly all of it is imported, so world prices and the taka rate pass into refined oil.
  • Price controls: with retail prices set by the government, quotes usually hold only briefly.
  • Fortification: vitamin A added to every domestic lot.
  • Testing: vitamin A, iodine value and EU contaminant results per lot.
  • Pack: PET bottles and jerrycans add filling and packaging cost over drums or bulk.

Lead times and delivery

No typical lead time can be given for refined soybean oil. Oil in stock in standard bottles moves fastest; a lot refined to your figures waits for crude to arrive and for a refining slot; private label bottles wait for printed labels; and lab results must be back before loading. Roptan confirms the dates, validity and minimum order in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver bottled oil in cartons, and loose oil in jerrycans or new food-grade drums, to shops, caterers and food plants. Each lot comes with its vitamin A result, the refinery batch and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Ask too whether the refinery logged the lot on BSTI's digital fortification reporting, which BSTI said in August 2026 it had made mandatory.

What we check for this order

  • Vitamin A on the lotWe read the lot's vitamin A against 1.5 to 3.0 mg per 100 g, with peroxide value beside it.
  • Iodine value against blendingWe check the iodine value sits in the soybean range, since blending is documented in loose oil.
  • Drums and batchWe check drums are new and food grade and the refinery batch is on the papers.
  • Current test editionsWe check the lab report cites current methods, such as ISO 3961:2024, not withdrawn editions.

Questions buyers ask

How do I know drum soybean oil is not blended?

Check the iodine value and fatty acid profile. Codex puts soybean oil at 124 to 139; in a 2024 study, market soybean oils read 68.2 to 89.1, which the authors took as a sign of blending with a cheaper, less unsaturated oil. Buy loose oil only with a lot result.

Is bottled soybean oil always fortified to standard?

Not always. In a 2024 test of 13 packaged brands bought in Dhaka, every brand had some vitamin A, but 73% fell short of BSTI's 1.5 mg per 100 g minimum, and only four of the soybean brands met it. Ask for a result on your lot, bottled or not.

Can I buy refined soybean oil without vitamin A?

Not for sale in Bangladesh: the 2013 Act bars selling, storing or supplying it unfortified and bars importing unfortified refined oil. For an export lot, tell us whether your market wants vitamin A added, and the certificate states the level.

Does refined soybean oil need an allergen label in the EU?

Fully refined soybean oil is exempt from the soy allergen declaration under Annex II of Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011; oil that is only degummed is not. Say which you are buying and ask the refinery to confirm full refining.

How soon will I hear back about edible oils?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
