Buying mustard oil in Bangladesh

Mustard oil here means oil pressed from mustard seed and sold unrefined for cooking, mostly in South Asia, not the essential oil distilled from it as a flavouring. With more mustard grown under government schemes, a USDA report said Bangladesh might use about 6.63 lakh tonnes in marketing year 2025, against about 5 lakh tonnes two years earlier.

A mustard oil exporter in Bangladesh must settle two questions before the oil moves: is it pure, and will the destination accept its erucic acid? Roptan sources from verified, licensed presses, has a lab check your lot's fatty acid profile and purity, and tells you if your market rules out cooking use.

Kinds of mustard oil

Expressed (pressed) mustard oil

Squeezed from the seed in a screw press and sold unrefined. This is the cooking oil; 'pressed' or 'expressed' on the label sets it apart from the essential oil.

Cold-pressed mustard oil

Oil that left the press below 49 °C. A screw press usually runs at about 60 to 99 °C from friction, so ask the seller to state the pressing temperature.

Hot-pressed (expeller) mustard oil

Seed is often pre-heated to about 121 °C before an expeller adds its own heat. 'Expeller' alone does not say hot or cold; name the method in the contract.

Mustard essential oil (not for cooking)

Steam distilled from the seed and used as a flavouring. It shares the name but is a different product: never buy or label it as cooking oil.

How to brief a mustard oil exporter in Bangladesh

Seed species
Codex covers white, brown and yellow (Brassica juncea) and black mustard. Name the species or mix you expect.
Pressing and acidity
State the temperature behind any cold-pressed claim. Codex's cold-pressed limits, acid value 4.0 mg KOH/g and peroxide value 15 meq/kg, are voluntary, so write them into the contract.
Erucic acid
As a percentage of total fatty acids. Codex puts mustard seed oil at 22 to 50%, and this number decides which markets take it as food.
Identity
Iodine value to ISO 3961:2024, against Codex's 92 to 125. Some market mustard oils in a 2024 Bangladeshi study fell below it, a possible sign of blending.
Purity and metals
Tests for argemone oil, the cause of epidemic dropsy, and mineral oil, plus iron and nickel, which the same study found above advised levels.
Label
'Pressed' or 'expressed' in the name and, for the EU, mustard declared as an allergen: EU law gives mustard oil no exemption.

Licences, tests and import rules for mustard oil

BSTI CM licence, BDS 25
BSTI's 2021 mandatory list names mustard oil under BDS 25, and a BSTI mobile court has fined a seller for making and selling it without the licence.
ISO 12966-2 and ISO 12966-4
The fatty acid profile by gas chromatography. Part 4 was revised in 2026, so a report citing its 2015 edition is out of date.
Regulation (EU) 2023/915
Caps erucic acid at 2% for most vegetable oils and at 5% for mustard oil sold as food, except, where the authority accepts it, mustard oil produced and eaten locally.
US FDA Import Alert 26-04
Lets US ports hold expressed mustard oil without examination. Release needs proof, such as a private lab analysis, that its erucic acid is not at an unsafe level.

What moves the price of mustard oil

  • Seed: mustard seed usually makes up most of the cost of a pressed oil.
  • Soybean oil: a USDA report said mustard oil turned competitive when soybean oil hit a record price in 2022.
  • Pressing yield and any refining you ask for.
  • Testing: erucic acid, argemone, metals and a fatty acid profile.
  • No vitamin A premix: the 2013 Act leaves mustard oil out of fortification.

Lead times and delivery

No typical lead time can be given. Oil already pressed and in store moves faster than a lot still to be pressed, private label bottles wait for printed labels, and lab results must be back before loading. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum order in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver in bottles, jerrycans or drums, usually of 200 litres; ask for new food-grade drums. Bulk lots are sampled to ISO 5555, so the sample represents the whole lot. Each delivery carries the lot's results, the seller's BSTI CM licence and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying mustard oil for export

Check your market's rule first: with the EU's 5% cap and the FDA's import alert, ordinary pressed oil usually cannot be sold as food in either. It ships under HS heading 1514, shared with rapeseed and colza oil, FOB Chattogram with the lot's lab report. Halal certification can come from BSTI or the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh; ask which your market accepts.

What we check for this order

  • Licence for this productThe press's BSTI CM licence must cover mustard oil, be current and match the name on the quote.
  • Erucic acid against your marketWe read the lot's erucic acid result against your market's limit before loading.
  • Argemone and mineral oilWe check the lot was tested for argemone oil, the documented adulterant of mustard oil, and for mineral oil.
  • Cooking oil, not essential oilWe check the label says pressed or expressed, so the lot cannot pass as the distilled flavouring.

Questions buyers ask

Will ordinary pressed mustard oil pass the EU erucic acid limit?

Usually not. Codex puts mustard seed oil at 22 to 50% erucic acid, while Regulation (EU) 2023/915 allows 5% in mustard oil sold as food. Get the result on your lot and check your market's rule before ordering.

Can mustard oil from Bangladesh enter the US as a cooking oil?

Usually not. The FDA's Import Alert 26-04 says expressed mustard oil may contain 20 to 40% erucic acid, and entries can be held without examination. The edible US benchmark is low erucic rapeseed oil, at no more than 2% under 21 CFR 184.1555.

Is Bangladeshi mustard oil fortified with vitamin A?

No. The Edible Oil Vitamin A Fortification Act 2013 names mustard oil, with coconut and olive oil, as outside its scope. A mustard oil lot needs no vitamin A result, and no premix sits in its cost.

What is the difference between mustard oil and mustard essential oil?

Cooking mustard oil is pressed from the seed. The essential, or volatile, oil is steam distilled and used as a flavouring, not for cooking. Both go by the same name, so the order and label should say pressed or expressed.

How soon will I hear back about edible oils?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
