Buying palm olein in Bangladesh
Palm olein is the liquid fraction of palm oil, separated from the solid stearin by fractionation. Bangladesh imported about 1.53 million tonnes of palm oil in FY2025-26, and trade reports say it arrives already refined. Industry sources say food processors fry chips, biscuits, instant noodles and snacks in it for its high smoke point and lower cost, while households lean towards soybean oil.
A palm olein exporter in Bangladesh may be selling oil refined abroad, so the papers matter as much as the oil: ask where your lot was refined and fractionated. Roptan sources from verified sellers, traces the refinery and batch, and has iodine value, slip point and vitamin A tested on your lot.
What to send a palm olein exporter in Bangladesh
- Iodine value
- To ISO 3961:2024: usually at least 56 for standard olein and 60 or higher for super olein. It is also a fast check for a blend.
- Slip point
- To ISO 6321:2021: not more than 24 °C for olein and 19.5 °C for super olein under Codex. Ask for the figure, not only a trade name.
- Acidity and peroxide
- Acid value to ISO 660:2020 and peroxide value to ISO 3960:2017. Codex's refined figures, 0.6 mg KOH/g and 10 meq/kg, bind only once written into the contract.
- Vitamin A
- The BSTI level for oil sold here, with peroxide value beside it, since oxidation can destroy the added vitamin.
- Heavy metals
- Mercury, lead, cadmium and arsenic: a 2024 study of 1,521 retail soybean and palm oils found mercury at levels its authors rated a health risk, apparently from imported crude.
- Pack and traceability
- New food-grade drums or a flexitank, with refinery and batch on the papers; drums reused from chemicals are reported in the loose trade.
Laws, standards and certificates for palm olein
- Vitamin A Act 2013 and BDS 1774
- The Act names palm olein: section 4 bars selling it unfortified and section 5 bars importing unfortified refined oil. BSTI's 2021 list sets fortified palm olein under BDS 1774.
- Regulation (EU) 2023/1115
- The EU deforestation rule covers HS 1511, palm oil and its fractions. The Commission now gives 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators and 30 June 2027 for small ones; check the current dates.
- Regulation (EU) 2023/915
- For EU food use: glycidyl esters up to 1,000 µg/kg, tested by GC/MS to ISO 18363-1, and four PAHs together up to 10.0 µg/kg.
Lead times and delivery
No typical lead time can be given for palm olein. Oil already landed and in a seller's tank moves faster than oil still to arrive; super olein and RSPO lots depend on what the refinery holds; flexitanks must be booked and bottles printed; and lab results must be back before loading. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum order in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh we deliver to snack and noodle plants, caterers and shops in drums, jerrycans or bottles. Bulk lots are sampled to ISO 5555, whose 2014 amendment covers flexitanks. Each lot comes with its vitamin A and peroxide results, the refinery batch and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying palm olein for export
Trade reports say palm oil reaches Bangladesh already refined, so ask where your lot was refined and fractionated, and keep those papers with yours. It ships under HS 1511.90, FOB Chattogram, in a flexitank, drums or bottles. EU buyers need deforestation due diligence and contaminant results. Tell us whether your market wants vitamin A added; halal can come from BSTI or the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh.
Questions buyers ask
What does 'super' mean on palm oil sold in Bangladesh?
Probably super olein, which Codex defines by an iodine value of 60 or higher, but the word is not defined on local labels, so put the iodine value and a slip point of not more than 19.5 °C in the contract.
Must palm olein sold in Bangladesh carry vitamin A?
Yes. The Edible Oil Vitamin A Fortification Act 2013 names palm olein, and the BSTI level is 1.5 to 3.0 mg per 100 g (15 to 30 ppm). For export lots, tell us whether your market wants it added.
How can I tell palm olein from a blend?
Check the iodine value and the fatty acid profile. Palm olein usually reads at least 56, while Codex puts soybean oil at 124 to 139, so soybean oil in the mix pushes the figure up. Loose-oil traders are reported to blend the two.
Can I get RSPO certified palm olein from Bangladesh?
Ask before you order. Trade reports say palm oil arrives in Bangladesh already refined, so an RSPO claim usually rests on the upstream refinery's certificate and the claim made for your lot. We ask the seller for both; without them, treat the oil as uncertified.
How soon will I hear back about edible oils?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
