Buying office chairs in Bangladesh

An office chair is a swivel chair on a single load-bearing column, the gas lift, which spreads into wheeled feet called castors. Offices, banks, call centres and schools in Bangladesh buy them for new floors and refits; importers buy them by the container. The right chair depends on how long someone sits in it.

Kinds of office chair

Task chairs

The basic swivel chair, usually without lumbar support or a headrest, comfortable for a couple of hours. Choose it for hot desks and training rooms.

Mid-back chairs

A fuller back, suited to four hours or more when the ergonomics are right. Choose it for most open-plan desks and screen work.

Executive chairs

A full back with head support, usually designed for eight hours or more and often in leather. Choose it for managers' rooms and boardrooms.

Heavy-duty chairs

Wider and sturdier, for taller or heavier users; some are rated for round-the-clock use. Choose it for control rooms.

Visitor chairs

Chairs for guests and meeting rooms. In Europe they are tested as non-domestic seating, not as office work chairs.

How to specify an office chair

Hours of use and user weight: State hours per day and the heaviest user. The European safety part assumes 8 hours a day and users up to 110 kg; heavier users need a higher rating.
Adjustments: List seat height, arm adjustment, synchronous tilt, lumbar support and footrest. Each adds parts and cost.
Base and castors: Name the base material, the seat height range for your desks, and castors that suit your floor, whether carpet, tile or wood.
Back and seat: Mesh, moulded foam or upholstered plywood. Give foam density as a number and the cover material.
Wood-based parts: A plywood seat or back counts as composite wood under US rules and releases formaldehyde under EU rules, so name the board and its emission class.
Storage in a humid climate: Bangladesh is hot and humid for much of the year, so ask for chairs bagged and cartoned dry, kept off the floor.

Standards and tests for office chairs

EN 1335-1:2020+A1:2022 and EN 1335-2:2018: Part 1 sets dimensions for three chair types; Part 2 sets safety, strength and durability. EN 1335-3 was withdrawn in 2018, so a report citing it is out of date.
BIFMA X5.1: The North American test standard for general-purpose office chairs. Ask which tests the report covers and for which chair type it was run.
EN 16139:2025 and EN 1022:2023: EN 16139 covers visitor chairs as non-domestic seating; EN 1022 tests whether a seat tips over. Ask for these editions.
EN 1021-1, EN 1021-2 and BS 7176: Cigarette and match-flame ignition tests for upholstery. In the UK, BS 7176 sets ignition resistance for non-domestic seating and refers to them or BS 5852.
EU and US formaldehyde rules: Since 6 August 2026 the EU limit for furniture is 0.062 mg/m3 in a chamber test. US composite wood parts need TSCA Title VI compliance.

What moves the price of an office chair

Kind: an executive chair usually costs more than a task chair, and leather usually adds more.
Adjustments: a synchronous mechanism, adjustable arms and lumbar support each add parts.
Imported parts: furniture makers in Bangladesh usually import raw materials, so exchange rates move the quote.
Test reports on your model, fire tests on the chosen fabric and formaldehyde papers for plywood parts.

Lead times and delivery

No single figure fits every order. Time grows with a new design that needs sampling, an imported mechanism or fabric, a test run on your model, and custom colours; a model the maker already builds and has tested is quicker. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum quantity in the quote.

Buying office chairs for export

Swivel chairs with height adjustment usually enter under HS 9401.31 (of wood) or 9401.39 (other). We quote FOB Chattogram. EUDR Annex I names wooden seats, so a chair with a plywood seat or back needs the importer's decision on scope; it applies to large and medium operators from 30 December 2026, micro and small from 30 June 2027. Raw-wood pallets need ISPM 15 marks.

No. EN 1335-3 and the 2009 edition of EN 1335-2 were withdrawn on 16 November 2018 and replaced by EN 1335-2:2018; dimensions sit in EN 1335-1:2020+A1:2022. Ask for a report on the current parts.

Which standard covers visitor and meeting chairs?

EN 16139:2025, for non-domestic seating, covers visitor chairs for adults up to 110 kg. Office work chairs, castors and seat height mechanisms stay with the EN 1335 series.

Can a chair serve heavier staff or round-the-clock shifts?

Yes, if it is built and tested for it. EN 1335-2 assumes 8 hours a day and users up to 110 kg, so heavier users or 24-hour shifts need a higher rating. State both and we check the report.

Does a chair with a plywood seat need US formaldehyde compliance?

Yes. TSCA Title VI covers composite wood as a panel, a component part or a finished good, for example 0.05 ppm for veneer-core hardwood plywood, measured by ASTM E1333. Ask for the board's compliance papers.

How soon will I hear back about furniture?
