Buying cane and rattan furniture in Bangladesh

Rattan is a climbing palm. Its whole stems serve as furniture frames, and its outer layer, pared into strips, is the cane woven into seats and backs; many pieces combine both. Homes, resorts, cafes and hotel terraces in Bangladesh buy cane chairs, sofas and tables because they are light, can be moved easily and take paint or stain much like wood.

As your cane and rattan furniture manufacturer in Bangladesh, Roptan works through verified makers: we turn your brief into one specification of frame, weave, finish and cushions, approve a sample with you, ask where the cane was cut and how it was treated, and check the bulk for weave faults, loose joints and damp. You deal with Roptan only.

Kinds of cane and rattan furniture

Rattan-frame pieces

Frames bent and joined from whole rattan stems, used like wood. Choose them for armchairs, lounge chairs and tables that must stay light.

Woven cane seats and backs

Cane strips woven over a frame of rattan, wood or metal. Choose it for dining chairs, side chairs and headboards.

Natural wicker

Wicker is a weaving technique, not a material, traditionally worked in rattan, willow, reed or bamboo. Choose it for baskets, screens and light pieces moved often.

Synthetic resin wicker

Plastic or resin weave, often on an aluminium frame, sold as all-weather wicker. Choose it over natural fibre for furniture left outdoors.

Cushioned lounge sets

Cane or rattan sofas and chairs with seat and back cushions. The cushions bring fire tests and their own durability checks into the order.

How to specify cane and rattan furniture

Material
Name rattan stem, woven cane, another plant fibre or synthetic weave for each part, since the frame and the weave can differ.
Frame
Rattan stem, timber or metal, with the stem or tube diameter in mm on the drawing. The frame decides strength, the customs heading and whether EU deforestation rules can apply.
Indoor or outdoor
Natural rattan is fairly flexible and can be used outdoors, but resin weave is often preferred for pieces left in sun and rain. Say where it will stand.
Finish
Natural, stained or painted: rattan takes paints and stains much like wood. Approve a finished sample, not a colour card.
Source of the cane
Ask where the cane was cut and how it was processed. Stems cut too young and polluting processing are known problems in the trade.
Damp and mould
Bangladesh's air is humid for much of the year. Ask for dry storage and packing, and any anti-mould sachet declared free of dimethyl fumarate.
Cushions and boards
Give the cushion fabric, the filling and its density in kg per cubic metre, and name any plywood or MDF table top or seat panel, which brings formaldehyde rules in.

Standards and rules for cane and rattan furniture

EN 12520:2024 and EN 16139:2025
Strength, durability and safety of domestic and non-domestic seating. Neither covers the durability of upholstery, so cushions need their own tests.
EN 581-1:2017, EN 581-2:2026, EN 581-3:2026
Outdoor seating and tables for domestic and contract use. Parts 2 and 3 were reissued in June 2026.
EN 1021-1 and EN 1021-2
Cigarette and match-flame ignition tests on cushion cover and filling. US and UK buyers may name their own tests, such as BS 5852.
Decision 2009/251/EC
EU ban on products containing the biocide dimethyl fumarate, once used in pouches inside furniture against mould. It caused skin reactions.
EU formaldehyde limit
Since 6 August 2026, 0.062 mg/m3 for furniture and wood-based articles, which covers plywood or MDF parts in a cane set.

What moves the price of cane and rattan furniture

  • Frame: whole rattan stem, timber or metal, and how much bending and joining the design needs.
  • Weave: a close or patterned weave usually takes more cane and more time than an open one.
  • Cushions: fabric, filling and any fire tests on them.
  • Bulk: light but bulky pieces fill a container by volume, so fewer fit per box than flat-packed furniture.

Lead times and delivery

No single figure fits every order. Time grows with a new design that needs a sample, cushions in imported fabric and fire or strength tests on your model. A design the maker already weaves is quicker. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum quantity in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver to homes, resorts, cafes and hotel terraces, wrapped and dry. We check each piece against the approved sample at handover for weave, joints and finish. You receive the delivery challan, warranty terms and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Weave and jointsOn pieces drawn from the lot, we check for broken or loose strands, gaps in the weave and joints that move, against the approved sample.
  • Damp and mouldWe look for mould spots and damp before packing and check that storage is dry and off the floor.
  • Sachet declarationWe check that any anti-mould sachet is declared free of dimethyl fumarate, which the EU bans.
  • Cushion papersWe check that fire test reports name the cushion fabric and filling actually used, not a similar one.

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between rattan, cane and wicker?

Rattan is the climbing palm; its whole stems make frames. Cane is the outer layer pared into strips for weaving. Wicker is the weaving technique, worked in rattan, willow, reed, bamboo or synthetic fibre.

Can cane and rattan furniture go outdoors?

Natural rattan is light, durable and fairly flexible, and can be used outside, but resin wicker on an aluminium frame is often preferred for pieces left in the weather. Outdoor seating and tables are tested under EN 581-2:2026 and EN 581-3:2026.

How do I keep mould off woven furniture?

Keep it dry: dry storage before packing and dry packing for transit. Do not accept sachets containing dimethyl fumarate; the EU banned products containing it after it caused skin reactions in furniture users.

Does the EU deforestation rule cover rattan furniture?

EUDR Annex I names wooden seats and wooden furniture. A set with a timber frame or table top is a mixed piece, and the importer decides whether it is in scope, with the seller stating the wood content.

How soon will I hear back about furniture?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
