How to specify a metal-frame chair

EN 16139:2025, the European standard for non-domestic seating such as canteens and cafes, for adults up to 110 kg. It does not cover outdoor seating or flammability, so add EN 581 for terraces and fire tests for padded chairs.

How many salt spray hours should I ask for?

Set a pass mark for comparing coatings, not a life figure. EN ISO 9227 hours correlate only weakly, if at all, with how long a coating lasts, so pair the hours with a film thickness and say indoor or outdoor.

Are linked banquet chairs tested as ranked seating?

Not if they are loose. EN 12727:2016 covers seating fastened to the floor or wall; linked chairs that are not fastened down are tested as chairs under the ordinary seating standards, and the linking devices have a European standard of their own.

Does an all-metal chair fall under the EU deforestation rule?

No. EUDR Annex I lists seats only where they are of wood. A metal chair with a plywood seat or back is a mixed case: the seller states the wood content and species, and the importer decides.
