Buying loafers and moccasins in Bangladesh

Loafers and moccasins are lace-less leather shoes that slip on. A loafer is a low slip-on, most often built with moccasin construction; a true moccasin forms the sole and sides from one piece of leather, stitched closed on top. With a loafers and moccasins manufacturer in Bangladesh, fit and the stitched seam need the most care.

Roptan runs the sourcing. We find a verified maker that already builds your construction on a suitable last, get the leather and sole named in the quote, check the test reports on the upper and lining leathers and check fit across sizes before bulk. You deal with Roptan only.

Kinds of loafer and moccasin

Penny loafers

The common loafer style: a low, lace-less slip-on built with moccasin construction. It began as a casual shoe and is now also worn with business suits.

Tassel loafers

A loafer finished with decorative tassels. Though casual, it came to be accepted in some business and legal settings alongside brogues. Choose it for a dressier slip-on.

Gored slip-ons

The shape of a lace-up Oxford with no laces and elastic side inserts, so it comes off easily yet stays snug. An earlier, less casual slip-on, sometimes called a dress loafer.

Moccasins

Sole and sides cut from one piece of leather and stitched together on top, sometimes with a vamp panel added. The sole is soft and flexible. Choose them for soft, casual wear.

How to specify loafers and moccasins

Style and construction
Penny, tassel, gored or true moccasin, with a drawing. Say whether the sole is cemented or welted: a welted sole can be replaced, a cemented one practically cannot.
Last and fit
A slip-on is lace-less, so the last alone sets the fit. Approve the fit on your last at several sizes, not on one sample size.
Leather grade
Full grain or corrected grain, named on the quote. 'Genuine leather' names no grade and often means a heavily processed split.
Lining and sock
Loafers are often unlined at the heel and toe, so name the lining and sock leathers and test them as you would the upper.
Sole
Leather or non-marking rubber, with the pattern. A moc-toe shoe on a non-marking rubber sole is close to a boat shoe, so say which you are buying.

Tests for loafer uppers and linings

EN ISO 11641:2025
Colour fastness of leather to perspiration, on the lining, sock and any unlined upper that touches the foot. Name the 2025 edition; the 2012 one was withdrawn.
EN ISO 11640:2018
Colour fastness of dyed leather to to-and-fro rubbing. Run it on uppers and linings in each colour of the order.
EN ISO 17075-1 or -2
Chromium VI in leather. REACH bars skin-contact leather at 3 mg/kg or more; the two parts use different methods, so ask which the lab used.
ISO 17708:2018
Upper-to-sole adhesion on the whole shoe, written for glued soles. Ask for it on every cemented style, with the pass value your market uses.

What moves the price of loafers and moccasins

  • Construction: a cemented slip-on costs least to make; a welted one adds a welt, cork filling and stitching.
  • Leather grade: full grain usually costs more than corrected grain or split, so check the quoted grade against the approved swatch.
  • Colours: fastness and chromium VI tests usually run per leather and colour, so each added colour adds lab cost.
  • Lab work: tests are often sent to labs in India, China or Europe, which adds cost per style.

Lead times and delivery

A loafer on the maker's existing last and sole moves faster than one needing a new last, since a slip-on must then be fitted again at several sizes. A custom leather colour waits for a tannery batch, and tests at an overseas lab add time. Roptan confirms the sample and bulk dates, and the minimum per style and colour, in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers boxed pairs to your shop, office or warehouse, with a packing list by style, colour and size, the test reports, the inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Try a few pairs against the approved fit sample on arrival.

Buying loafers and moccasins for export

Importers usually buy FOB Chattogram. Loafers and moccasins have no HS line of their own: with rubber or plastic soles and leather uppers they usually fall under 6403.99, and with leather soles under 6403.59, so your broker confirms the line. Origin goes on a REX statement for EU GSP or under UK DCTS rules.

What we check for this order

  • Fit across sizesBefore bulk we check the fit sample at several sizes on your last, since a lace-less shoe has no laces to take up slack.
  • Seam and stitchingWe check the moccasin or apron seam on pairs from the bulk for even, closed stitching that matches the approved sample.
  • Linings testedWe check that the fastness and chromium VI reports cover the lining and sock leathers, not only the upper.
  • Lab, lot and countryWe ask which accredited lab ran the tests, in which country, and on which production lot.

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between a loafer and a moccasin?

A moccasin is a construction: one piece of leather forms the sole and sides and is stitched closed on top, often with a vamp panel, giving a soft, flexible shoe. A loafer is a style: a low, lace-less slip-on, most often built with moccasin construction.

Is a gored slip-on a loafer?

It is usually sold as one, sometimes as a dress loafer. It keeps the shape of a lace-up Oxford, with elastic inserts at the sides instead of laces, so it slips off easily and stays snug when worn. It reads as less casual than a penny loafer.

Why test the lining of a loafer?

Because loafers are often unlined at the heel and toe, and the leather that is there touches the foot directly. Ask for perspiration fastness to EN ISO 11641:2025, rubbing fastness to EN ISO 11640:2018 and chromium VI below 3 mg/kg on the lining and sock leathers as well as the upper.

Can a moccasin-built shoe be sold as a boat shoe?

Often, yes. Boat shoes also use moc-toe construction, on non-marking rubber soles. If you want a boat shoe, say so and specify that sole and durable stitching; if you want a loafer, name the loafer style and the sole you approved, so the maker builds the right shoe.

How soon will I hear back about leather footwear?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
