Buying kalijira rice in Bangladesh
Kalijira is a small, slender-grained aromatic rice, usually described as grown mainly in Bangladesh. The name comes from kalo jeera, black cumin, which its black-husked paddy resembles. Cooked, it is slightly sticky, unlike basmati, and it is typically used for khichuri, pulao, biryani, jorda and kheer. It is usually grown in the north, around Dinajpur and Rangpur.
A Kalijira rice exporter in Bangladesh needs a ministry approval with quota left, and supply is limited as farmers move to higher-yielding rice. Roptan checks the approval behind each offer, matches you to a verified seller, keeps a sealed sample, has the lot graded to the Codex rice standard and tested for inorganic arsenic, and sees it loaded.
How to specify Kalijira
- Name and crop year
- Kalijira by name, as the ministry's export list spells it, and the crop year. Agree a reference sample sealed by both sides for aroma, size and colour.
- Grain size class
- Codex classes rice by length or by length-to-width ratio. For a slender grain, name the option you buy on and ask for measured figures from your lot.
- Head rice and brokens
- Brokens are defined as fractions of the whole kernel's length, and Codex leaves the limit to you. State it, with the method ISO 7301.
- Moisture
- Codex allows up to 15 per cent and advises lower limits for long transport and storage; trade contracts usually ask for 14 per cent or less.
- Labels and lot codes
- Codex wants the product name, lot code and packer's name and address on non-retail sacks or their documents. Ask for the variety name too.
- Contaminants
- Inorganic arsenic, cadmium and aflatoxins against your market's limits, on samples from your own lot. The EU cadmium limit for rice is 0.15 mg/kg.
Registration, rules and standards for Kalijira
- Bangladesh Kalijira, GI-07
- Listed on the DPDT register of geographical indications as 'Bangladesh Kalijira', dated 7 February 2017, with the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) as applicant.
- Ministry of Commerce export approval
- Held by the exporting company with a tonnage cap, under Export Policy 2024-27. It cannot be transferred, so the shipment goes out in the approved company's name.
- Phytosanitary certificate
- Issued for rice exports by the Plant Quarantine Wing. A fumigation certificate is usually needed only where the importing country asks.
Lead times and delivery
We give no standard lead time or minimum for Kalijira. Time depends on whether a seller with approval and quota has stock, how close the approval is to its end date, customs verification of the rice, lab results and the phytosanitary certificate. A lot cannot exceed the seller's remaining quota. Roptan confirms dates and the minimum in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers Kalijira with a weight list, the lab reports you ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Rice is on the Mandatory Jute Packaging Act 2010 list, so bulk lots for the home market usually go in jute bags.
Buying kalijira rice for export
Aromatic rice export needs a current Ministry of Commerce approval, and the rule changes: all rice exports were banned on 17 October 2023, aromatic rice reopened in April 2025 and again in 2026, and each company's quota was halved on 8 September 2026, with approvals to 31 December 2026. Customs verify each shipment and a minimum FOB price applies. Roptan checks the rule for every order and quotes FOB Chattogram.
Questions buyers ask
Is Kalijira a GI product?
Yes. It is on the DPDT register as 'Bangladesh Kalijira', GI-07, with BRRI as applicant. The GI protects the name and origin under Bangladeshi law. It does not by itself prove grain quality, and a foreign market usually recognises it only if it is registered there too.
Is the GI called Dinajpur Kalijira?
No. Some press reports add Dinajpur, but the register carries no district in the Kalijira name. The Dinajpur GI on the register is a different rice, Dinajpur Kataribhog, GI-06. Use 'Bangladesh Kalijira' on labels and papers if you use the GI name at all.
Can Kalijira be exported from Bangladesh now?
Only by a company holding a current ministry approval with quota left. The 2026 approvals run to 31 December 2026 and were cut by half on 8 September 2026, and the government can cancel an approval without notice. Roptan rechecks the rule before every quote and every shipment.
How does Kalijira cook compared with basmati?
Kalijira is usually slightly sticky when cooked, while basmati is not, and its grains are small and slender. Cook a sample from the actual lot before you confirm, because your customers judge aroma and texture, not the name.
How soon will I hear back about rice and flour?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
