Buying chinigura aromatic rice in Bangladesh
Chinigura is a small aromatic rice from Bangladesh, usually described as short-grained and typically cooked for polao and for the Chattogram akhni. Its scent, as in other aromatic rices, comes from the compound 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline. Importers abroad buy it in bags and retail packs; caterers, hotels and retailers at home buy it for festive cooking.
A Chinigura aromatic rice exporter in Bangladesh can ship only inside a quota the government approves, and the rules have changed several times since 2022. Roptan checks the approval behind each offer, matches you to a verified seller, has samples graded to the Codex rice standard and tested for inorganic arsenic, and watches the loading.
How to specify Chinigura for a contract
- Variety name and crop year
- The name exactly as the ministry's list spells it, and the crop year. Keep a reference sample sealed by both sides to judge aroma and grain against.
- Grain size class
- Codex classes rice by length or by length-to-width ratio; by length, short grain is under 6.2 mm. Name the option and ask for a measured length.
- Head rice and brokens
- Codex defines brokens as fractions of the whole kernel's length and leaves the limit to the buyer. State your limit and the method, ISO 7301.
- Moisture
- Codex allows up to 15 per cent and advises lower limits for long voyages; trade contracts usually ask for 14 per cent or less.
- Kernel defects
- Use Codex terms in the grain report: for milled rice, chalky kernels up to 11.0 per cent and damaged or heat-damaged kernels up to 3.0 per cent each.
- Contaminants
- Inorganic arsenic, cadmium and aflatoxins against your market's limits, tested on samples from your own lot.
Rules, standards and papers for Chinigura
- Ministry of Commerce export approval
- Held by the exporting company itself, with a tonnage cap, under Export Policy 2024-27. It cannot be transferred, so ask to see it in the seller's name.
- Regulation (EU) 2023/915
- EU limits: inorganic arsenic 0.15 mg/kg in white milled rice and 0.10 mg/kg in rice for infant food; cadmium 0.15 mg/kg.
- Phytosanitary certificate
- Issued for rice exports by the Plant Quarantine Wing. A fumigation certificate is usually needed only where the importing country asks.
- Geographical indication
- Chinigura is not on the DPDT register of Bangladesh geographical indications, so an offer calling it a GI rice is wrong.
Lead times and delivery
We give no standard lead time or minimum for Chinigura, because shipping depends on the rule in force. Time runs longer when the seller's approval is near its end date or its quota nearly used, and while customs verify the rice. A lot cannot exceed the seller's remaining quota. Roptan confirms dates and the minimum in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers Chinigura with a weight list, the lab reports you ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Rice is on the Mandatory Jute Packaging Act 2010 list, so bulk lots for the home market usually go in jute bags.
Buying chinigura aromatic rice for export
Aromatic rice export needs a current Ministry of Commerce approval, and the rule moves: all rice exports were banned on 17 October 2023, aromatic rice reopened in 2025 and 2026, and on 8 September 2026 each company's quota was halved, with approvals running to 31 December 2026. Customs verify each lot and a minimum FOB price applies. Roptan checks the rule for every order and quotes FOB Chattogram.
Questions buyers ask
Can Chinigura be exported from Bangladesh today?
Only by a company holding a current ministry approval with quota left. The 2026 approvals run to 31 December 2026, and on 8 September 2026 each company's quota was cut by half. The government can cancel an approval without notice, so Roptan rechecks the rule before every quote and shipment.
Is Chinigura a GI-registered rice?
No. The aromatic rices on the DPDT register are Bangladesh Kalijira, Dinajpur Kataribhog and Sherpur Tulshimala. If an offer or label calls Chinigura a GI product, ask the seller to correct it.
How short is a Chinigura grain?
It is usually described as short-grained, but a contract needs a number. Under the Codex length option, short grain is under 6.2 mm. Ask for the measured average length of whole kernels on your lot and write the class into the contract.
Has an export ever been stopped mid-contract?
Yes. On 17 October 2023 all rice exports were banned and the Plant Quarantine Wing stopped issuing phytosanitary certificates, when exporters had shipped only 10 to 12 per cent of permitted volumes. Agree in the contract what happens to deposits if the rule changes.
How soon will I hear back about rice and flour?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
