Buying iron and arsenic removal plants in Bangladesh

An iron and arsenic removal plant takes dissolved iron, and where needed arsenic, out of groundwater before use. WHO names Bangladesh among the countries with naturally high arsenic in groundwater, found here in 1993 after wells were sunk without arsenic tests. Iron is the other common problem: it stains clothes and fittings, clogs pipes and troubles textile, food and pharmaceutical users.

As your iron and arsenic removal plant supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan starts from the lab test, not a district average. We source from verified sellers, check that the design names the limit and the waste route, arrange installation through the seller and accept the plant on a treated water test.

Kinds of iron and arsenic removal plant

Aeration and sand filter plants

The usual iron plant: air oxidises dissolved iron into particles, a rapid sand filter holds them and backwashing cleans the bed. Choose it where iron is the main problem and arsenic is low.

Manganese dioxide media filters

The same aeration step, with a manganese dioxide media bed in place of plain sand to capture the oxidised iron. Ask what the media achieves on your water.

Iron electrocoagulation units

An electric current dissolves iron into a hydroxide that binds arsenic. The method has been used mainly in Bangladesh and is described as largely successful; consider it where arsenic must come out.

Adsorption media units

Arsenic is held on an adsorption medium, the common route at household and small scale. Ion exchange and activated alumina have been considered but are not commonly used.

What to tell an iron and arsenic removal plant supplier in Bangladesh

A test of each well
Iron, manganese and arsenic from a recent lab test of every well feeding the plant. Arsenic is found particularly at 30 to 150 metres, the usual tubewell depth, so test each well.
Use and the limit
Drinking, process or both, and the arsenic limit the treated water must meet, written into the design basis.
Flow and iron load
Daily demand, peak flow per hour and running hours, so the seller can size the filter area and backwash for your iron level.
Aeration method
Venturi tube, aeration turbine or compressed air with diffusers. Each usually differs in oxygen uptake and power draw, so ask which is proposed and why.
Disinfection
Filtration is not disinfection. For drinking water, state a chlorine or ozone step after the filter and a target of zero coliform in 100 ml.
Backwash water and sludge
Say where backwash water and spent media go. The arsenic taken out of the water ends up in that waste, so it needs a planned disposal route.

Limits, laws and tests for iron and arsenic

WHO and Bangladesh arsenic limits
WHO sets 0.01 mg/L, provisional because arsenic is hard to remove, and asks for levels as low as reasonably possible. The Bangladesh standard is 0.05 mg/L. Name the one you need.
US EPA secondary standards
Iron and manganese are among 15 non-mandatory US limits set for taste, colour and staining. A useful comparison for staining, but not Bangladesh law.
Water Act 2013
A tubewell may abstract groundwater subject to the lowest safe yield level, and abstraction can be restricted by a protection order. Any permission is the site owner's.
Treated water lab test
Iron, manganese and arsenic in treated water, sampled after commissioning and judged against the design basis, not the nameplate.

What moves the price of an iron and arsenic removal plant

  • Iron load: more iron means more precipitate, more frequent backwash and more filter area.
  • Filter media: plain graded sand or manganese dioxide media, and how much the bed holds.
  • Aeration: a Venturi, a turbine or a compressed air system, each with its own equipment and power draw.
  • Arsenic stage: electrocoagulation or adsorption media adds a step beyond iron removal.
  • Waste handling: settling, drying and disposal of backwash sludge that holds the arsenic removed.

Lead times and delivery

There is no standard lead time. The plant is usually sized once a lab test of each well is in hand. An arsenic stage, a larger flow or imported media and vessels make it longer; a single aeration and sand filter for one building is simpler. Civil work for tanks and the backwash drain follows. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum in the quote.

We deliver to apartment blocks, schools, hospitals and factories across Bangladesh. The seller installs and commissions the plant where agreed, sets the backwash cycle and hands over a treated water lab test, the manual and a spares list. You receive the warranty in writing, the delivery note and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • A test for every wellWe check the design uses a recent test of each well feeding the plant, since arsenic varies from well to well.
  • Named arsenic limitWe check the design basis names the limit, WHO or national, that the treated water test must meet.
  • Disinfection stepFor drinking water, we check a chlorine or ozone step follows the filter and that zero coliform is the target.
  • Sludge and backwash routeWe check where backwash water and spent media go, since the arsenic taken out ends up there.

Questions buyers ask

Does an iron removal plant also deal with arsenic?

Do not assume it. Ask the seller which step removes arsenic on your water: aeration and filtration, iron electrocoagulation or an adsorption stage. Accept the plant on a lab test of treated water, since WHO asks for arsenic to be kept as low as reasonably possible.

Why test every tubewell separately?

Because arsenic here sits in young sediments at 30 to 150 metres, the depth most tubewells reach, and levels differ between wells. A neighbour's result does not size your plant.

Why does the filter need backwashing so often?

Iron-rich water fills the bed with precipitate, and sand beds are meant for small amounts of fine solids. Rapid sand filters in water works are often backwashed several times a day. Ask for the backwash interval on your iron level.

Is the US iron limit the rule in Bangladesh?

No. In the United States iron and manganese sit in secondary standards that are not mandatory and deal with taste, colour and staining. Agree in the design basis the iron level the treated water must meet, and test it at handover.

How soon will I hear back about water treatment plants and purifiers?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the capacity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
