Buying drinking water plants in Bangladesh

A drinking water plant treats raw water from a tubewell, river or pond so people can drink it safely. In 2019 nearly everyone in Bangladesh, 98.5 percent, had an improved water source, and 86 percent of households drank from a tubewell, but a tubewell does not by itself mean safe water. Schools, factories, hospitals, housing estates and bottlers buy plants to close that gap.

As your drinking water plant supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan sizes nothing until the raw water has been tested for bacteria, turbidity, iron, arsenic and salinity. We source from verified sellers, check the treatment steps and disinfection against your source, arrange installation through the seller and deliver.

Kinds of drinking water plant

Conventional treatment plants

Coagulation and flocculation, settling, filtration through sand, gravel or carbon, then disinfection and storage. Choose it for turbid river or pond water.

Groundwater filtration and disinfection plants

Well-filtered groundwater may need little beyond disinfection; iron, arsenic or salinity stages are added only where the test shows them. Choose it for a tested tubewell.

Ultrafiltration plants

A membrane that removes particles and large molecules from raw water, used in place of the usual clarification and filtration stages. Scale and biofilm can block it, so the cleaning routine is part of the offer.

UV disinfection systems

Ultraviolet light treats water that is already clear. Particles shield microbes from the light, so UV sits behind a filter that also improves the dose.

Plants for bottling and jar filling

Treatment ahead of a filling line for bottled or jar water. The plant carries no licence of its own; the packaged product needs BSTI's licence, held by the bottler.

How to brief a drinking water plant supplier in Bangladesh

Source and full raw water test
Tubewell, river, pond or city supply, with bacteria, turbidity, iron, arsenic and salinity results. Boiling or a household filter does not deal with every contaminant.
Demand and storage
Daily demand, peak hour and tank size. Ozone leaves no residual once it decays, so say how stored water stays protected.
Filtration stage
A rapid sand filter does little for taste, smell or dissolved impurities unless carbon is in the bed. A slow sand filter loads at about 200 to 400 litres per square metre per hour, so it needs far more area.
Carbon grade
Some carbons are rated by dechlorination half-life, a measure of how well they remove chlorine. Ask for the grade and the change interval.
Disinfection method
Chlorine, such as sodium hypochlorite, ozone or UV. For UV, the dose should be set at end of lamp life, when output has fallen to 80 percent.

Standards, licences and tests for drinking water

WHO safely managed drinking water
Water from an improved source, on premises, available when needed and free from faecal and priority chemical contamination. Judge the plant against that, not taste or clarity.
BSTI licence for packaged water
In 2019 BSTI tested 28 bottled water brands, found 10 substandard, revoked three licences and suspended seven. A bottling plant buyer needs the product licence.
Water Act 2013
Groundwater abstraction by tubewell is subject to the lowest safe yield level, and no water source may be exhausted by abstraction. Any permission is the site owner's.
Treated water lab test
A sample taken after commissioning, tested for bacteria first and then for the chemical limits named in the design basis.

What moves the price of a drinking water plant

  • Source quality: turbid surface water needs the full coagulation to disinfection train; good groundwater needs fewer steps.
  • Filtration technology: ultrafiltration membranes against sand and carbon beds, and their cleaning or replacement.
  • Disinfection: chlorine dosing, an ozone generator or UV lamps with their pre-filter and lamp changes.
  • Storage: the size of treated water tanks and how they are protected from contamination.
  • Filling line: a bottling or jar line adds filling and packing equipment beyond the treatment plant.

Lead times and delivery

There is no standard lead time. The design waits for the raw water test, and a surface water train with settling tanks takes longer to build than a filter and disinfection skid for a tested tubewell. Imported membranes or UV systems and civil work for tanks add time. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum in the quote.

We deliver to schools, factories, hospitals and housing estates across Bangladesh. The seller installs and commissions the plant where agreed, sets the disinfection dose and hands over a lab test of treated water, bacteria included, plus manuals and a list of carbon, cartridge and lamp spares. You receive the warranty in writing, the delivery note and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Design from a full testWe check the design is based on a raw water test covering bacteria, turbidity, iron, arsenic and salinity.
  • Stored water protectedWe check how treated water stays safe in tanks, since ozone and UV leave no residual.
  • UV dose at end of lifeWhere UV is used, we check the dose is stated at end of lamp life and a pre-filter sits ahead of it.
  • Bacteria test at handoverWe check the seller hands over a lab test of treated water, bacteria first, before the plant is accepted.

Questions buyers ask

Is tubewell water already safe to drink?

Not necessarily. Most households in Bangladesh drink from a tubewell, but a tubewell does not show that the water is free of bacteria, arsenic or other contamination. Test the raw water first; the result decides which treatment steps the plant needs.

Should we use chlorine, ozone or UV?

It depends on the water and the storage. Chlorine, often as sodium hypochlorite, is the common choice and leaves a residual. Ozone leaves no taste or odour once decayed, but no residual. UV needs clear, pre-filtered water and a dose set at end of lamp life.

Does the plant need a BSTI licence?

Not the plant itself. BSTI licenses packaged drinking water, so a bottling or jar business needs the licence for its product. BSTI does act: in 2019 it revoked three bottled water licences and suspended seven after testing.

Can a sand filter make pond water drinkable?

Not on its own. Pond and river water usually need coagulation, settling and filtration, and a drinking water plant should end with a disinfection step. A rapid sand filter also does little for taste or dissolved impurities unless carbon is in the bed.

How soon will I hear back about water treatment plants and purifiers?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the capacity, where it is needed and by when.
