Buying coir rope and twine in Bangladesh

Coir rope and twine are twisted from yarn spun from coconut husk fibre. Coir is relatively waterproof, resists saltwater and floats, so its rope has long served launches, boats and trucks, while twine is used for tying. Plastic and nylon rope now competes for the same jobs, and many of the units still making coir rope in Bangladesh are small.

The common problem is blend: a report on one rope-making area found garment waste, cotton, jute, plastic and nylon mixed with coir. As your coir rope and twine supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan writes fibre, diameter, strands and coil length into the order, approves a sample with you and checks the bulk coils against it.

Kinds of coir rope and twine

Coir yarn

Spun coir fibre, the starting point of all coir cordage. Buy it to make your own rope, mats or ties, and state the ply and whether it was spun by hand or machine.

Coir twine

Thin cordage for tying, made from coir yarn. State the diameter and the length per ball or coil, and approve a sample before the bulk order.

Twisted rope

Yarn twisted into strands, then two or three strands laid together into rope. State the strand count with the diameter, and agree both on an approved sample.

Marine rope

Rope from the long, tough fibre, used on launches, boats and trawlers. Coir floats and resists saltwater damage, so long lengths in water add little weight.

Blended rope

Coir spun with jute, cotton, garment waste, plastic or nylon. It is not coir rope: if you accept a blend, agree the mix in writing; if not, write coir only.

How to brief a coir rope and twine supplier in Bangladesh

Fibre
White fibre from green husks is finer and is traditionally spun into rope; brown fibre from mature husks is thicker and stronger but stiffer. Say which and write 'coir only, no blend', or the agreed mix.
Diameter and strands
Diameter in mm with a tolerance, the number of strands, and how diameter is measured: EN ISO 2307 sets a method.
Linear mass and lay
Mass per metre shows how much fibre went into the rope; lay length shows how tight the twist is. Fix both on the approved sample.
Breaking force
Where the rope carries load, state the minimum breaking force you need and ask for a test to EN ISO 2307 on a sample from your lot.
Coil and finish
Metres per coil, how coils are tied and packed, and natural, bleached or dyed. Coir can be bleached and dyed, so ask what was used.

Standards and tests for coir rope and twine

IS 1410:2019
The Bureau of Indian Standards specification for coir ropes, fourth revision. A reference both sides can write into an order; it is not a Bangladeshi rule.
IS 16338:2019 and IS 14596:2020
Indian specifications for coir twine for trailing hop vines and for 2-ply coir yarn spun by hand. Name the one that matches what you buy, with its edition.
EN ISO 2307:2019
The test method for fibre ropes: linear density, diameter, lay length, elongation and breaking force. The 2010 edition is withdrawn, so ask for the 2019 one.

What moves the price of coir rope and twine

  • Fibre content: pure coir against a blend with jute, cotton, garment waste, plastic or nylon.
  • Fibre quality: white or brown, and how long the fibre is.
  • Construction: diameter, strand count and how tight the twist is.
  • Finish and packing: coil length, how coils are packed, and any bleaching or dyeing.
  • Husk supply: coco peat, charcoal and geotextile makers compete for the same husks.
  • Plastic and nylon rope, which buyers weigh against coir for the same job.

Lead times and delivery

There is no standard lead time for coir rope. Twine and rope in a diameter the units already make usually come sooner than a special diameter, long coils, dyed rope or a large tonnage. Many units are small, so a big order may be shared across several, and a breaking force test adds time. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum in the quote.

We deliver coils anywhere in Bangladesh, to boat operators, transport firms and shops, with a coil count and weights checked against the delivery note and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Coir resists rot, but rope kept wet for long can grow mould, so store coils dry and off the ground.

Buying coir rope and twine for export

We quote export orders lot by lot against an approved sample, FOB Chattogram. Tell us the destination first, so the plant health papers match its rules.

What we check for this order

  • Fibre contentIf you ordered coir only, we have the approved sample and a bulk coil fibre-tested for blend.
  • Diameter and strandsWe measure diameter and count strands on coils from the lot against the order and the sample.
  • Weight and lengthWe weigh and measure sampled coils, so short coils and light rope are found before delivery.
  • Breaking forceFor rope that carries load, we ask for an EN ISO 2307 test on a sample cut from your lot.

Questions buyers ask

Is coir rope good in water?

Usually, yes. Coir is relatively waterproof, is one of the few natural fibres that resists saltwater damage, and floats, so long lengths add little weight to boats and buoys. It is rot-resistant too, but dry it before storage, since rope kept wet for long can grow mould.

How strong is coir rope?

It depends on the fibre, diameter, strands and twist, and we found no neutral source that publishes breaking force figures for coir rope. If the rope carries load, state the minimum you need and ask for a test to EN ISO 2307 on a sample from your lot, rather than trusting another maker's sheet.

How do I know the rope is pure coir?

Write 'coir only, no blend' in the order, approve a sample, and ask for a fibre test on a bulk coil if the use matters. Blends with cotton, jute, plastic and nylon are reported in local rope, so a sample alone does not prove the bulk.

Does coir rope need a phytosanitary certificate?

It depends on the destination. Finished cordage usually meets lighter plant health rules than coco peat, and New Zealand has listed clean coir twine among coir products with no biosecurity requirements; check the current import health standard. Where a certificate is needed, the Plant Quarantine Wing of the Department of Agricultural Extension issues it.

How soon will I hear back about coir and coco peat?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
