Buying coconut husk chips in Bangladesh
Coconut husk chips are the whole husk chopped or crushed into pieces, sold loose or pressed into blocks. Growers add them to growing mixes because each chip holds water inside yet leaves air around it, while loose coir fibre is usually not used in growing media. Once their salts are washed out, chips can also serve as a substrate for mushrooms.
Supply comes first. Chips use the same husks as fibre and coco peat, and press reports say husk is short in Bangladesh because many coconuts are sold green. As your coconut husk chip supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan confirms the source before quoting, fixes chip size on an approved sample, asks for EC and pH on each lot, and delivers.
How to brief a coconut husk chip supplier in Bangladesh
- Chip size
- We found no grade or standard that sets chip sizes. State the range you want in mm, fix it on an approved sample, and agree how size is checked.
- Fines and dust
- Set a limit on fine dust and pith in the chips, since fines fill the air spaces you are buying chips for.
- Washing and salts
- Unwashed, washed or buffered, the water used, and EC and pH limits with the test method. For sensitive crops, add sodium, potassium and chloride.
- Moisture
- Chips are sold by weight, so set a moisture limit and ask for the result on each lot.
- Foreign matter
- No stones, sand, plastic string, soil or mould, checked on chips drawn from the lot rather than ones picked by the seller.
- Form and packing
- Loose in bags or bales, or pressed blocks; the weight of each pack, and how packs are stacked or palletised.
Standards and tests for husk chips
- No product standard
- The Bureau of Indian Standards lists coir specifications for fibre, yarn, rope, mats, felt and pith, but none for husk chips. The specification is yours, set by the approved sample.
- EN 13037, EN 13038 and EN 13652
- European test methods for the pH, electrical conductivity and water-soluble elements of growing media, used for chips as for pith. Ask the lab to name its method on the report.
- EN 13040 and EN 13041
- Sample preparation, moisture and physical properties. EN 13041 only covers particles up to 25 mm, so coarse chips need the lab's note on how it prepared the sample.
Lead times and delivery
There is no standard lead time for husk chips, and supply in Bangladesh appears limited. Chips cut and dried from husk on hand usually come sooner than washed or buffered chips, a tight size range or pressed blocks. Sun drying slows in the rains, and short husk supply can delay a large order. Roptan confirms the source, the dates and any minimum in the quote.
We deliver chips anywhere in Bangladesh, loose in bags or bales, or as pressed blocks on pallets, with the lot test results and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Store them dry and covered until use, since damp chips can grow mould. Sending plants abroad in a chip mix? Tell us the destination first, as plant health papers differ.
Buying coconut husk chips for export
Export orders are quoted lot by lot against an approved sample, FOB Chattogram, once the source and quantity are confirmed. Tell us the destination first: New Zealand treats chips as coco peat products, with conditions on wash water, drying and treatment, and whether chips fall inside the EU's exemption for unused coir fibre is for your importer to confirm. The seller applies to the Plant Quarantine Wing of the Department of Agricultural Extension for the phytosanitary certificate and any grow-out test the destination requires.
Questions buyers ask
What size should coconut husk chips be?
We found no grade or standard, so it depends on your use. Choose a range, approve a sample at that size and hold the bulk to it, with a limit on fines. If a lab will test physical properties, note that EN 13041 only covers particles up to 25 mm.
Do husk chips need washing?
Usually, for growing. Chips come from the same husks as coco peat, which naturally hold potassium, sodium and chloride, so they are rinsed in fresh water, and buffered with calcium for sensitive crops. Published salt figures are for coir dust, not chips, so ask for EC on your own lot.
Can husk chips be shipped to the EU or New Zealand?
Ask your importer first. The EU bars most organic growing media from outside the Union; its exemption names medium made entirely of unused peat or coir fibre, and whether chips count is for the importer and the authorities to confirm. New Zealand has treated chips as coco peat products, so check its current import health standard.
Are husk chips the same as coco peat?
No. Coco peat is the fine pith; chips are pieces of the whole husk. Chips hold water inside each piece but leave air between pieces, so growers use them to open a mix. Order them by name, size and form, since 'husk' alone could bring pith, chips or fibre.
How soon will I hear back about coir and coco peat?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
