Buying coir mattress fibre in Bangladesh

Mattress fibre is the shorter coir fibre from just under the skin of the coconut, sifted, sun-dried and baled. Mattress, sofa and seat makers use it loose as stuffing, or buy it curled and bonded with latex into rubberised sheets and felt. Coir is a common mattress material in South Asia, and Bangladeshi fibre usually goes to mattress and padding makers at home.

Three things matter to a mattress maker: what binds the fibre, how clean and dry it is, and whether the next lot matches the last. As your coir mattress fibre supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan writes kind, binder, thickness and moisture into the order, checks a bale or sheet from each lot against the approved sample, and delivers.

Kinds of coir mattress fibre

Loose mattress fibre

Short brown fibre, sifted, sun-dried and baled, and used loose as stuffing in mattresses and cushion padding. Choose it for traditional filled mattresses and simple cushions.

Curled fibre

Mattress fibre kept slightly moist, then machine twisted so it keeps its elasticity. It is the base for rubberised pads and sheets; choose it if you bond your own.

Rubberised coir sheet

Pads of curled fibre sprayed with rubber latex that bonds the fibres together. Used for mattress cores and upholstery padding, including car upholstery in Europe.

Coir felt

Fibre needle-felted, or mixed with resin or liquid rubber and pressed by heat, into felt of the thickness the mattress maker orders. Ask which binder is used.

Moulded cushioning

Rubberised coir moulded into shaped cushioning. We found no report of it being made in Bangladesh, so ask whether the seller moulds it or buys it in.

How to brief a coir mattress fibre supplier in Bangladesh

Kind and reference
Loose, curled, sheet, felt or moulded, and the Indian part with its edition if you want one. Older editions of IS 8391 and IS 11060 are withdrawn.
Cleanliness
Fibre sifted free of dirt, sand, pith and shell, judged on bales opened from the lot rather than a sample picked by the seller.
Moisture and odour
Set a moisture limit for loose and curled fibre, and check dryness and smell: fibre is sold by weight and ends up sealed inside a mattress.
Bales
Local bales are usually about 20 kg, tied with plastic string. State the bale weight and wrapping you want for storage and handling.
Sheet and felt
Thickness, density and size with tolerances, and how sheets are stacked or rolled. Approve them on a sample cut from production.
Binder
Latex, rubber or resin, and how much. Coir and latex are known allergens, so the binder belongs on the specification and the packing.

Indian standards for coir mattress fibre

IS 9308 Parts 2 and 4
Bureau of Indian Standards specifications for mattress coir fibre (2020) and machine twisted curled fibre (2019). References to write into an order, not Bangladeshi rules.
IS 8391 Parts 1 to 3
Indian specifications for rubberised coir sheets for cushioning: curled and sandwiched (2019) and needle felt (2020). The 2018 edition is withdrawn, so name part and year.
IS 15340:2019 and IS 11060:2020
Indian specifications for coir felt and for moulded rubberised coir cushioning. The 1984 edition of IS 11060 is withdrawn, so quote the 2020 one.

What moves the price of coir mattress fibre

  • The kind: loose fibre, curled fibre, rubberised sheet, felt or moulded cushioning.
  • Binder: the latex, rubber or resin content of sheet and felt.
  • Sheet and felt: thickness, density, cut size and how they are packed.
  • Fibre: length, colour, cleanliness and moisture, and the bale weight.
  • Husk supply: press reports say many coconuts are sold green, leaving fewer mature husks for fibre.
  • Foam and other fill, which a mattress maker can use instead of coir.

Lead times and delivery

There is no standard lead time. Loose fibre already baled usually moves soonest; curled fibre takes longer, and sheet or felt made to your thickness longer again. Sun drying slows in the rains, and a short supply of mature husk can hold an order. Many units are small, so agree a regular monthly quantity in advance. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum in the quote.

We deliver anywhere in Bangladesh to mattress, furniture and seat makers: loose and curled fibre in bales, sheet and felt flat or rolled. Each lot comes with weights or sheet counts, the binder named on the packing, and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Keep bales dry and covered in store, and handle them so dust stays down.

Buying coir mattress fibre for export

Coir mattress fibre made in Bangladesh usually goes to mattress and furniture makers at home. For an export order, we quote lot by lot against an approved sample, FOB Chattogram.

What we check for this order

  • Kind and binderWe check the fibre kind and the binder on the packing against the order and the approved sample.
  • Clean and dryWe open sampled bales for dirt, sand, shell and pith, and check dryness and odour.
  • Weight or thicknessWe weigh sampled bales, and measure thickness and size on sampled sheets and felt.
  • Lot matchWe compare each lot with the first approved sample, so a repeat order matches the first one.

Questions buyers ask

What is rubberised coir?

Curled coir fibre bonded with rubber latex into a pad or sheet. Mattress and upholstery makers use it for cores and padding, and in Europe the car industry has used it as upholstery padding. India specifies it under IS 8391, in parts for curled, needle felt and sandwiched sheets.

Is coir mattress fibre an allergy risk?

It can be. Coir is a known allergen, and so is the latex often used to bond it. Ask for the binder in writing, keep dust down in handling, and tell your own customers what the mattress contains where your market asks for it.

Does coir fibre need a fire test?

Not the fibre itself, but the mattress may. In the US, 16 CFR 1632 tests a mattress against a lit cigarette and 16 CFR 1633 tests the whole mattress set against an open flame. The fill has to work inside a design that passes, so test the mattress, not the bale.

What does 'mattress fibre' mean on a quote?

It can mean loose fibre, curled fibre, a rubberised pad or felt; Sri Lanka's export trade lists mattress fibre and coir pads as separate products. Write which one you want, with the reference part, size and binder, so two quotes describe the same thing.

How soon will I hear back about coir and coco peat?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
