Buying coir fibre in Bangladesh

Coir fibre is the coarse fibre in the husk of the coconut. Brush and broom makers buy the long bristle fibre; rope, mat, mattress and padding makers buy the rest. In the Bangladeshi units the press has described, the husk is cut by machine and the fibre pulled out, sun-dried and baled. The fine pith left over goes to growers as coco peat.

A fibre order turns on two questions: which fibre is in the bale, and how much of its weight is water. As your coir fibre supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan writes kind, length, colour and moisture into the order, has bales from each lot opened and weighed, and confirms the source, since many units are small.

Kinds of coir fibre

Bristle fibre

The longest fibre, usually combed with steel combs to remove the short fibre, and sold to brush and broom makers. IS 9308 Part 1, an Indian specification, describes it.

Brown fibre

Fibre from mature husks: thick, strong and resistant to abrasion, but stiffer than white fibre. Choose it for mats, brushes, sacking and padding that must take wear.

White retted fibre

From green husks soaked in water for up to ten months before extraction. Finer, weaker and more flexible than brown fibre, it goes into yarn, rope, finer brushes and nets. IS 898:2020 covers it.

Mattress fibre

The shorter fibre from under the skin of the nut, usually sifted, sun-dried and baled for stuffing and rubberised sheets. IS 9308 Part 2 is its Indian reference.

Curled fibre

Mattress fibre kept slightly moist so it stays elastic enough to be machine twisted into a curl, for fill that must keep its spring. IS 9308 Part 4 covers it.

How to brief a coir fibre supplier in Bangladesh

Kind and standard part
Name the kind and, for a written reference, the Indian part and edition. Quote IS 9308 with its part number: the 1987 edition is withdrawn.
Length and colour
Coir fibres are typically 10 to 30 cm long. State the minimum length, or the share of long fibre, and the colour you accept, and check both on a sample.
Moisture
State a moisture limit and ask for the result on each lot. Fibre is sold by weight, so water in the bale is weight you pay for.
Cleanliness
Ask for fibre sifted free of dust, pith, shell and soil, judged on bales opened from the lot rather than a hand-picked sample.
Bales
Local bales are usually about 20 kg, tied with plastic string. State the bale weight, pressing and wrapping your store or truck needs.

Standards and papers for coir fibre

IS 9308 Parts 1 to 4
Bureau of Indian Standards specifications for mechanically extracted fibre: bristle, mattress and decorticated (2020), machine twisted curled (2019). References for an order, not Bangladeshi rules.
IS 898:2020
The Indian specification for retted coir fibre, third revision. Name it, with the edition, when you order white fibre from soaked green husks.
Phytosanitary certificate
Issued for fibre sent abroad, when the importing country asks for one, by the Plant Quarantine Wing of the Department of Agricultural Extension under the Plant Quarantine Act 2011.

What moves the price of coir fibre

  • The kind: bristle or mattress fibre, brown or white, retted or mechanically extracted.
  • Length and colour: a tighter range of length or shade means more sorting.
  • Cleanliness and moisture: how much dust and pith is sifted out, and the moisture limit you set.
  • Husk supply: coco peat, charcoal and geotextile makers now compete for the same husks, the trade reports.
  • Baling and freight: bale weight and pressing, and the distance to your site for a bulky load.

Lead times and delivery

Coir fibre has no standard lead time. Baled mixed brown fibre usually ships sooner than combed bristle fibre, a tight length or colour range, or a large tonnage gathered from several small units. Retting white fibre can take up to ten months, so ask what retted fibre is already made. Sun drying slows in the rains. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum in the quote.

We deliver bales by truck anywhere in Bangladesh, to brush, rope, mat, mattress and padding makers, with the bale count, lot weights, the moisture result and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Fibre is a plant product, so we check for mould and soil on arrival; store bales dry and off the floor.

Buying coir fibre for export

Bangladesh ships little coir fibre abroad, so we quote export orders lot by lot against an approved sample, FOB Chattogram. Tell us the destination first, since its plant health rules decide the papers.

What we check for this order

  • Kind and lengthWe open bales from the lot and compare kind, length and colour with the approved sample.
  • Weight and moistureWe weigh sampled bales and have the moisture checked, so you pay for fibre, not water.
  • Clean fibreWe look for dust, pith, shell, soil and mould in opened bales before the lot is loaded.
  • Source and tonnageWe confirm where the fibre comes from and that the seller can fill your tonnage, since many units are small.

Questions buyers ask

Is brown or white coir fibre stronger?

Brown. Fibre from mature husks is thicker, stronger and more resistant to abrasion, though stiffer. White fibre from green husks, retted for up to ten months, is finer and weaker and goes into yarn, rope and nets. For brushes, mats and padding, choose brown.

How much fibre does one husk give?

FAO puts the average at 80 to 90 g of fibre per husk in south India and Sri Lanka, and more than 2 kg of pith for every kilogram of fibre. So a fibre unit turns out more than twice as much pith as fibre, and fibre supply follows the supply of husk.

Can you supply coir fibre every month?

Often, with planning. Press reports say many Bangladeshi coconuts are sold green, leaving fewer mature husks, and some units have closed for lack of them. Sun drying also slows in the rains. Tell us the monthly tonnage; we confirm in writing what the seller can commit before we quote.

Which standard should I name for bristle fibre?

IS 9308 Part 1:2020, the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for bristle coir fibre, if you want a written reference. It is Indian, not a Bangladeshi rule, so both sides agree to it in the order. Add your own length and moisture limits, and approve a sample.

How soon will I hear back about coir and coco peat?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
