Buying coir mats in Bangladesh

A coir mat is woven or tufted from coconut husk fibre and yarn. Coir is tough and rot-resistant, the kind of material doormats are usually made from. Offices, hotels, schools and homes buy door and floor mats, and cricket mats laid over a concrete strip serve as amateur pitches. Many of the units making coir mats in Bangladesh are small.

Mats of the same size can differ in weight and fibre content: some local mats mix cotton waste, plastic or nylon into the coir. As your coir mat supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan fixes fibre, size, thickness and weight per square metre on an approved sample, checks the bulk against it and delivers.

Kinds of coir mat

Fibre and yarn door mats

A local door mat reported from one coir area: soaked, ground fibre is spun into fine yarn, then combined with loose fibre into the mat. Fix the fibre content on a sample.

Woven coir mats

Mats woven on hand or mechanical looms from the finer grades of bristle and white fibre. State the weave and the yarn, and fix both on an approved sample.

Coir matting

Woven coir floor covering in larger pieces than a door mat. State the width, length, weave and edge finish, and approve a cut piece before the bulk order.

Tufted and backed mats

Coir tufted into a base and held by a latex, PVC or rubber backing. Specify the backing yourself, and approve its bond on a sample before the bulk order.

Cricket mats

Long coir mats laid over a concrete slab, sometimes with soil over them, to make an amateur pitch. We know of no standard for them, so state length, width, thickness and weave.

How to brief a coir mat supplier in Bangladesh

Fibre content
Write 'coir only, no blend', or the agreed mix, and approve it on a sample. Some local mats are made with cotton waste, plastic or nylon.
Construction
Woven, tufted, or fibre and yarn, and whether the face has a pile; the customs code follows construction.
Size and thickness
Width, length and thickness in mm, each with a tolerance. We found no trade norm for coir mat thickness, so the approved sample sets it.
Weight per square metre
Weigh the approved sample and write its mass in g/m² into the order; it is the plainest check of how much fibre the bulk holds.
Backing
None, latex, PVC or rubber. Coir and the latex used to treat it are known allergens, so state the backing for clinics, schools and homes.
Colour and edges
Natural, dyed or printed, and how the edges are finished. Approve colours on the physical sample.

Standards and rules for coir mats

IS 11420 (Part 19):2020
The Bureau of Indian Standards specification for coir mats, first revision. A reference you can write into an order, not a Bangladeshi rule.
IS 12503 (Part 16):2020
The Indian specification for coir mattings, mourzouks and carpets, first revision. A reference for larger woven floor coverings, used with your own size and weight.
US 16 CFR 1631 (FF 2-70)
For US sales of mats with no side over 1.83 m and an area up to 2.23 m²: seven of eight specimens must pass the pill test, or the mat needs a permanent flammable label.

What moves the price of a coir mat

  • Fibre content: pure coir against a mix with cotton waste, plastic or nylon.
  • Size, thickness and weight per square metre, which set how much fibre goes in.
  • Construction: woven, tufted, or fibre and yarn, and any pile or pattern.
  • Backing and finish: latex, PVC or rubber, edging, dyeing or print.
  • Husk supply: coco peat, charcoal and geotextile makers compete for the same husks.
  • Plastic and nylon mats, which buyers weigh against coir for plain entrances.

Lead times and delivery

Coir mats have no standard lead time. Plain mats in a size the units already make usually come sooner than a new size, a cricket mat, a backed mat or a dyed or printed design. Many units are small, so a large order may be shared across several. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum in the quote.

We deliver mats anywhere in Bangladesh, flat in bundles or, for mattings and cricket mats, rolled, with a count by size and design and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Pack mats dry: coir resists rot, but damp mats in a closed truck or store can grow mould.

Buying coir mats for export

We quote export orders lot by lot against an approved sample, FOB Chattogram. Tell us the destination and how the mat is made, so the customs code and papers are right.

What we check for this order

  • Fibre contentIf you ordered coir only, we have the sample and a bulk mat fibre-tested for blend.
  • Size and weightWe measure and weigh mats of each size against the approved sample and its weight per square metre.
  • Backing and sheddingOn backed mats we flex edges and corners for lifting, and shake mats for loose fibre.
  • Dry and cleanWe check that bundles are dry, with no mould or damp odour, before loading.

Questions buyers ask

What should I specify for a cricket mat?

Length, width, thickness, the yarn and weave, edge finish and how it is rolled. We know of no standard for cricket matting, so the approved sample is the reference. Say whether it lies on concrete or soil, since an amateur pitch can be a concrete slab with the mat on top.

Are coir mats an allergy risk?

For some people, yes. Coir is a known allergen, and so is the latex often used to bond or back it. If mats go into a clinic, school or home with sensitive users, tell us; choose an unbacked mat or another backing, and we name the backing on the packing list.

Which customs code does a coir mat use?

It depends on how it is made. Woven coir floor coverings have their own line, 5702 20. Tufted mats go under heading 5703, as other textile materials, and other constructions under 5705. Tell us the construction, and let your customs broker confirm the full code.

How do I compare two quotes for coir mats?

On the same terms. Fibre content, size, thickness, weight per square metre, construction and backing all move the price, so a lower quote may be a lighter or blended mat. Ask each seller for a sample, then weigh, measure and fibre-test it before you compare.

How soon will I hear back about coir and coco peat?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
