Buying coco peat blocks in Bangladesh
Coco peat, also called coir pith or coir dust, is the fine material left in the coconut husk once the fibre is pulled out. It is dried and pressed into blocks or bricks that the grower soaks to expand. In Bangladesh, vegetable seedling growers raise plants in it instead of soil, nurseries pot in it, and seedling exporters pack roots in it.
The risk is salt, and it changes from lot to lot. Press reports also say husk is short here, as many coconuts are sold green, and some coco peat is imported from India. As your coco peat block supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan confirms the source, writes your EC, pH and moisture limits into the order and asks for a lab result on each lot.
How to brief a coco peat block supplier in Bangladesh
- Format and content
- Block, brick, slab, grow bag or disc, with dry weight and size, and pure pith or a stated share of husk chips, which open the mix to air.
- Treatment, EC and pH
- Unwashed, washed and buffered are trade words, so define them: state your EC and pH range and the extraction method, since different extractions give different readings.
- Sodium, potassium and chloride
- For sensitive crops, ask for these on a water extract after washing or buffering, and agree the limits and the extraction method in writing.
- Moisture
- Blocks are sold by weight, so set a moisture limit and ask for the result on each lot. A wetter block holds less pith.
- Sand and seeds
- Set a sand limit and ask for pith free of weed seeds, pests and stones. In a simple check, pith floats in water while sand settles.
Standards and test methods for coco peat
- IS 17739:2024 and IS 19103:2025
- Bureau of Indian Standards specifications for raw coir pith, replacing the withdrawn 2022 edition, and for coir pith blocks. References to write into an order, not Bangladeshi rules.
- EN 13037, EN 13038 and EN 13652
- European methods for the pH, electrical conductivity and water-soluble elements of growing media; EN 13652 is a route to sodium and potassium. Ask the lab to name its method.
- EN 13040, EN 13041 and EN 15428
- Sample preparation and moisture, physical properties such as air and water volume, and particle size. EN 13041 stops at particles of 25 mm, so coarse chips need the lab's note.
Lead times and delivery
Coco peat blocks have no standard lead time. Pressed, unwashed pith already made usually ships soonest. Washing, buffering and drying add time, sun drying slows in the rains, and every lot waits for its test result. A large order may need pith from several units or an import lot. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum in the quote.
We deliver blocks anywhere in Bangladesh, on pallets or in bags, with the lab report for each lot and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Store them dry and off the ground. Shipping plants abroad in coco peat? Tell us the destination first, since its plant health rules may set conditions on the medium.
Buying coco peat blocks for export
Export orders are quoted lot by lot against an approved sample, FOB Chattogram. Tell us the destination first. The EU admits a growing medium from outside the Union only when it is made entirely of unused coir or peat, under Regulation (EU) 2019/2072, and New Zealand sets production and treatment conditions in its import health standard, so the seller's wash water, drying yard and treatment records can decide whether a lot can ship. The phytosanitary certificate comes from the Plant Quarantine Wing of the Department of Agricultural Extension.
Questions buyers ask
Why is coco peat salty?
Coconut husks naturally hold potassium, sodium and chloride. A 2002 study of coir dust from Asia, America and Africa found high salinity, high sodium and chloride, and wide differences between and within sources. That is why growers wash or buffer pith and test every lot.
Should I choose washed or buffered coco peat?
It depends on the crop. Buffered pith is usually chosen for sensitive crops, since the calcium wash leaches salts and adds nitrogen. Coir is rich in potassium, which can lead to magnesium and calcium shortages, so plan the feed. Either way, agree sodium and potassium limits and the extraction method in writing.
How much does a block expand?
It varies, and litre figures quoted in the trade disagree widely. Ask for expansion volume on each lot by a stated method on a retained sample, and soak one block yourself, with your own water, before you order in bulk.
Can coco peat go to the EU or New Zealand?
It can go to the EU if it is pure coir. Regulation (EU) 2019/2072, Annex VI point 20, bars most organic growing media from outside the EU but exempts medium made entirely of unused coir fibre or peat; a blend or used coir is outside it. For New Zealand, check the current import health standard.
How soon will I hear back about coir and coco peat?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
