Buying coir and coco peat in Bangladesh
Coir is the fibre taken from coconut husk. Coco peat, or coir pith, is the fine material left when the fibre is extracted, about twice the fibre by weight. Growers use coco peat as a growing medium, mattress makers use mattress fibre, and homes, offices and sports grounds in Dhaka and beyond buy coir rope, door mats and cricket mats.
Much coir work in Bangladesh is done in small household units, such as the cluster at Swarupkathi in Pirojpur, so a bulk order is often split across several units and has to be checked lot by lot. As a coir and coco peat supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan sources from verified sellers, checks samples and lot results against your specification, and delivers. You deal with Roptan only.
What to tell a coir and coco peat supplier in Bangladesh
- Product and grade
- Name the product: bristle, mixed or mattress fibre, coco peat, rope, mats or husk chips. Each fibre type has its own Indian reference standard, so name the one you want.
- Use and limits for coco peat
- Say what you grow and your limits for EC and pH, so the seller supplies material that suits the crop rather than a general grade.
- Moisture
- State the moisture limit. Fibre and pith are sold by weight and carry water, so a moisture result per lot protects the weight you pay for.
- Pure coir or blend
- Write 'coir only, no blend' for rope, yarn and mats if that is what you need. Local rope and mats are often blended with other fibres.
- Size and format
- Coco peat as blocks or bricks and their weight; rope by diameter and coil length; mats by size; chips by chip size. Lot number and weight on each pack.
- Quantity and date
- Total kg or tonnes and the dates. Units are small, so give the seller time to make or collect the order across units.
Standards and test reports for coir and coco peat
- IS 9308 and IS 898 for coir fibre
- Bureau of Indian Standards specifications for bristle, mattress, decorticated and curled fibre (IS 9308 Parts 1 to 4) and retted fibre (IS 898:2020). A reference, not a Bangladesh rule.
- IS 17739 and IS 19103 for coco peat
- IS 17739:2024 covers raw coir pith, with test methods for pH and EC; IS 19103:2025 covers coir pith blocks of different EC and packing sizes.
- IS 11420 Part 19, IS 12503 and IS 14596
- Indian specifications for coir mats, for coir mattings and carpets, and for hand-spun 2-ply coir yarn. Useful when you order mats or yarn to a stated construction.
- Lot test report
- EC, pH, moisture and sand for coco peat, the tests the trade uses; length and moisture for fibre. From the seller's lab or an independent lab, for each lot.
- Trade licence and ERC
- A current trade licence in the quoted name, and for export an Export Registration Certificate from the Office of the Chief Controller of Imports and Exports.
Lead times and delivery
We do not quote a standard lead time. Much coir work in Bangladesh is done in small units, so the date depends on the quantity, how many units the order is spread across, the weather for drying and the lot tests. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum quantity in the quote, once the seller has stated its capacity in writing.
We deliver across Bangladesh: to nurseries and growers in Dhaka, Gazipur and Savar, to mattress and furniture makers, and to buyers in Khulna and Chattogram. Bales, blocks and coils are weighed or counted on delivery against the order and the approved sample, with the lot test reports. You receive a delivery note and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying coir and coco peat for export
Foreign buyers can order FOB Chattogram (Chittagong). Bangladesh is not one of the main coir exporters (India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia are), so we quote export orders lot by lot against an approved sample. The seller holds an ERC. Where the destination asks for a phytosanitary certificate, the Plant Quarantine Wing of the Department of Agricultural Extension issues it.
Questions buyers ask
Is coco peat the same as coir pith?
Yes. Coir pith is the name in the trade and the standards; coco peat is the name growers use. It is the fine material left when fibre is taken from the husk, about twice the fibre by weight. It is sold loose, or pressed into blocks and bricks that expand when soaked.
What should I test coco peat for?
Salt level (EC), pH, moisture and sand content are the tests the trade uses, with expansion volume for blocks. Agree the limits and the test method in writing before ordering. IS 17739, the Indian standard for raw coir pith, sets test methods for pH and EC and is a useful reference.
Can I get pure coir rope and mats in Bangladesh?
Yes, if you specify it. Rope and mats sold locally are often blended with jute, cotton waste or plastic. State 'coir only, no blend', approve a sample before the bulk order, and we check the delivered goods against that sample.
Do Indian coir standards apply in Bangladesh?
No. They are Bureau of Indian Standards specifications, used here as a reference only. They still help: naming IS 9308 Part 2 for mattress fibre or IS 19103 for coco peat blocks gives you and the seller the same definitions and test methods. State the edition in your order.
What quantity of coir products can you supply?
It depends on the product and the date. Many coir units in Bangladesh are small household units, so a large order of rope or mats is often made across several units. Tell us the quantity and the date; the seller states capacity in writing and Roptan confirms it in the quote.
How soon will I hear back about coir and coco peat?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
