Buying workwear and uniforms in Bangladesh

Workwear is clothing built for work, especially manual work, where durability and safety count. A uniform marks the members of an organisation, from security guards and hospital staff to school pupils and hotel teams. Some workwear is also personal protective equipment, such as high-visibility or flame-resistant garments, and only that kind falls under PPE rules.

Uniforms are usually reordered every year and often washed harder than home clothes, so the brief must cover laundering, shade and sizing as well as cloth. Roptan sources from verified factories, tests a laundered sample and checks protective garments' certificates against the exact model and class.

Kinds of workwear and uniform

Industrial workwear

Coveralls covering all but head, hands and feet, bib-and-brace overalls, work jackets and multi-pocket trousers in heavy twill, canvas or poly-cotton. Choose them for factories and workshops.

Corporate, school and security uniforms

Shirts and trousers in the organisation's colours, usually poly-cotton, which resists wrinkling and holds colour through repeated washing. Choose them for front-desk, school and guard staff.

Healthcare scrubs

Usually a short-sleeve V-neck top with drawstring trousers in cotton or cotton-polyester. For hot industrial laundry choose a polyester-rich blend: cotton-heavy cloth shrinks more under high-heat drying.

High-visibility garments

Fluorescent cloth with retroreflective tape, certified to EN ISO 20471 in three classes by minimum material area, rising to Class 3. Medium-risk work falls under EN 17353 instead.

Flame and heat protective garments

Certified to EN ISO 11612 (heat and flame), EN ISO 11611 (welding) or EN ISO 14116 (limited flame spread); EN 1149-5 adds static dissipation. Choose by the hazard on site.

How to brief a workwear and uniform supplier in Bangladesh

Headcount and sizes
Headcount by size and by men's or women's cut, and a size set for a fit trial before the full order is cut.
Fabric blend and weight
Poly-cotton, commonly about 65/35 or 55/45, cotton or a stretch blend, at a GSM matched to the wear: too light thins with washing, too heavy is uncomfortable over a shift.
Laundering
Home or industrial washing, the number of cycles the garment must survive, the programme and the drying method.
Finishes
Soil release, wicking or antimicrobial, bonded to the fibre rather than coated, since bonded finishes tend to last more washes.
Decoration
Embroidery or print, with size, colours and positions; on high-visibility garments, logos must not cover the minimum visible areas.
Protective function
For PPE, the standard and class or performance level, such as EN ISO 20471 Class 2, so sellers quote certified fabric and garments.

Standards and laws for workwear

Regulation (EU) 2016/425
Covers only garments with a protective function, not plain uniforms. Category II needs EU type-examination; Category III, such as heat comparable to air at 100 degrees C or more, adds production checks.
EN ISO 15797 and ISO 30023
Industrial washing and finishing procedures for testing workwear for shrinkage, colour, creasing, seam puckering and pilling, and symbols marking garments fit for industrial laundry.
EN ISO 13688
General requirements for protective clothing: ergonomics, innocuousness, size designation, ageing, compatibility and marking, plus the information the maker supplies.
Bangladesh Labour Act 2006, section 78A
Where it applies, no one may be put to work unless personal protective equipment is supplied and its use ensured, and a record book kept. Inserted in 2013; the official text is Bangla.

What moves the price of workwear and uniforms

  • Fabric: weight, blend, and special cloth such as fluorescent or flame-resistant fabric.
  • Certification: type-examination for Category II, plus production checks for Category III, usually adds cost and time.
  • Decoration: embroidery is priced largely by stitch count, design size and number of locations.
  • Laundry rating: garments built for many industrial wash cycles usually cost more than those for home washing.

Lead times and delivery

Bulk usually runs about 60 to 90 days after sample and fit approval, longer when certified fabric must be booked, since certification is settled before bulk. Eid closures and the August to October peak usually add time. Minimums vary with the fabric and with whether styles share a base construction; certified workwear usually needs larger runs than plain uniforms. Roptan's quote confirms both.

Roptan delivers to your head office or site anywhere in Bangladesh, packed by person or department from your staff list, with the size list, test reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Protective garments arrive with their user information and certificate copies.

Buying workwear and uniforms for export

Work trousers and bib-and-brace overalls enter under HS 6203 and 6204 with other trousers; the UK tariff splits out industrial and occupational lines at eight digits, such as 6203 42 11. Protective garments for the EU need CE marking, with the notified body number for Category III, an EU declaration of conformity and instructions in the user's language. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong).

What we check for this order

  • Laundered pre-production sampleWashed through the end user's programme for the agreed cycles, then checked for shrinkage, colour, creasing, puckering and pilling.
  • Visible areas after washingOn EN ISO 20471 garments, logos and shrinkage must still leave the class's minimum visible areas.
  • Certificate scopeThe type-examination certificate matched to the exact model, class, fabric and date, with CE marking and user information present.
  • Size set and final AQLA size set tried on staff before cutting, then an ISO 2859-1 final inspection; one critical defect fails the lot.

Questions buyers ask

Is a uniform PPE?

Not by itself. Under Regulation (EU) 2016/425, PPE is worn for protection against risks to health or safety, so a plain shirt or trouser is outside it. A high-visibility vest or flame-resistant coverall is inside it and needs the certification its category requires.

Which fabric holds up to industrial laundry?

Usually a polyester-rich poly-cotton, commonly about 65/35, which resists wrinkling and holds colour over repeated washing at some cost to breathability. Cotton-heavy cloth breathes better but shrinks more under high-heat drying. Test a sample in your laundry's own programme before bulk.

Can next year's reorder match this year's shade?

Yes, if the shade is controlled. Fabric dyed in different lots can vary, so we ask the seller to keep the approved shade standard and match each new lot to it. Send a worn garment with the reorder if the new stock must blend in.

Do factories in Bangladesh have to supply PPE?

Where it applies, yes. Section 78A of the Bangladesh Labour Act 2006, inserted by the 2013 amendment, says in paraphrase that no one may be put to work without personal protective equipment being supplied and its use ensured, that a record book must be kept, and that workers who do not use the equipment supplied are answerable. Plain uniforms are not PPE.

How soon will I hear back about garments?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
