Buying hoodies and sweatshirts in Bangladesh

A hoodie is a sweatshirt with a hood; a sweatshirt may have none. Both are heavy knits, usually brushed fleece or French terry, with rib cuffs and hem. Importers buy them for cold-weather ranges; schools and companies order branded hoodies for teams. They sit in HS 6110 alongside knitted sweaters, so no hoodie-only export figure exists.

A fleece hoodie shows its faults after washing: pills on the brushed face, a body that shrinks or twists, cuffs that lose their grip. Roptan uses verified knit factories, approves a washed sample and checks drawcords on children's sizes before bulk is cut.

Kinds of hoodie and sweatshirt

Pullover hoodies

Pulled over the head, often with one large kangaroo pocket on the front and a drawstring in the hood. Choose it for team, school and merchandise hoodies.

Zip hoodies

A front zip, usually with one pocket on each side of it. Choose it for staff wear and layering, and state the zip type, length and puller on the brief.

Crew-neck sweatshirts

The same knit body without a hood, with rib at the neck, cuffs and hem. Choose it for uniforms and casual ranges; half-zip and quarter-zip versions open partway down the front.

Brushed fleece

The loops on the inner face are brushed into a soft, warm nap, the classic winter construction. Choose it for cold-weather ranges, with a pilling grade in the order.

French terry

Loops on the inside and a smooth, flat outside, left unbrushed, so the cloth is lighter and breathes. Choose it for trans-seasonal ranges and warmer markets.

Standards and tests for hoodies

EN ISO 12945-2
Pilling by the modified Martindale method, which matters on a brushed face. State the grade you accept and test fabric that has been washed.
EN 14682 and 16 CFR 1120
Children's hood cords: EN 14682 sets cord and drawstring rules in the EU up to the age of 14, under the General Product Safety Regulation; 16 CFR 1120 covers the US.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100
Product class 2 covers articles worn against the skin, class 3 those without direct skin contact, class 1 babies' wear. Ask which class the hoodie certificate covers.

What moves the price of a hoodie or sweatshirt

  • Weight: knit fabric is priced per kilogram, so a 380 GSM fleece usually costs more than a 280 GSM one.
  • Blend: the cotton-polyester ratio trades softness against shape retention and cost.
  • Finishing: brushed fleece takes heavier finishing than plain terry, which usually adds time and cost.
  • Decoration and trims: embroidery, prints, zips and drawcords each usually add cost.

Lead times and delivery

First samples usually take two to three weeks from tech pack approval. Bulk usually runs 45 to 90 days from pre-production approval, or about 75 to 100 days from the order, with fleece fabric and finishing setting the pace. For production in the August to October peak, book capacity by April or May; Eid closures usually add time. Minimums usually run from several hundred to a few thousand pieces. Roptan confirms both in the quote.

Roptan delivers across Bangladesh to your office, store or school, with cartons sorted by size and colour, the packing list, test and inspection reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Cotton fleece stored damp in monsoon heat can mould, so we check that each lot is packed dry.

Buying hoodies and sweatshirts for export

Hoodies and sweatshirts usually enter under HS 6110, 6110.20 for cotton and 6110.30 for man-made fibres; your broker confirms the exact line. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong); sea transit then usually takes three to five weeks to European and US ports. Brushed cotton-rich fleece is usually read as a raised-surface fabric under US 16 CFR 1610, outside the plain-fabric weight exemption, so agree with your lab or buyer how its flammability guaranty is supported.

What we check for this order

  • Approval from a washed sampleWe approve from a washed sample, since shrinkage, twist and pilling on the brushed face usually show only after laundering.
  • Rib recovery and shadeCuffs and hem return to size after the wash test, and the rib matches the body shade.
  • Drawcords on children's sizesCord length, free ends and anchoring on the pre-production sample, against EN 14682 or the US rule for the market.
  • Final AQL and needle logAt the ISO 2859-1 final inspection we check shade by dye lot, decoration and zips, and the needle detector record.

Questions buyers ask

What GSM should a hoodie be?

Sellers usually quote about 280 to 320 GSM for a mid-weight, year-round hoodie and 320 to 380 GSM for heavy winter fleece. Lighter French terry is usually quoted at 240 to 280 GSM. Compare quotes at the same weight, and ask for a swatch of the actual fabric.

What is CVC fleece?

CVC, chief value cotton, is a cotton-polyester blend with more than half cotton, typically 55 to 80 percent; 60/40, 65/35 and 80/20 are common ratios. The ratio trades softness against shape retention and cost, so state it exactly. Organic cotton needs GOTS papers, recycled polyester GRS.

Can you embroider fleece hoodies?

Yes. Stable, medium to heavy fabrics such as fleece usually give embroidery the support it needs, and polyester thread is common where washing and abrasion matter. Screen print is the other usual method. Approve a washed sample of the decorated hoodie, not only the flat artwork.

Can children's hoodies have a hood drawstring?

Not for the US market up to size 12. Under 16 CFR 1120, children's upper outerwear in sizes 2T to 16 with drawstrings that fail the referenced standard counts as a substantial product hazard; that standard bars hood and neck drawstrings up to size 12 and limits waist drawstrings. In the EU, EN 14682 sets cord rules up to age 14. We check cords on the pre-production sample.

How soon will I hear back about garments?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
