Buying wooden toys in Bangladesh

Wooden toys are made mainly from wood and wood products: blocks, stacking sets, pull-along toys, puzzles and pretend-play sets. Nurseries, schools and gift shops in Dhaka buy them as learning toys, and importers order them under their own label. With a wooden toy manufacturer in Bangladesh, most of the tests fall on the paint, the glue in engineered boards and the small pieces.

Roptan writes species, treatment and finish into the order and places it with a verified maker. We check that the coating report covers each colour on the finished toy, that engineered wood has a formaldehyde result where the market needs one, and that the packed lot matches the approved sample. You deal with Roptan only.

Kinds of wooden toy

Blocks and stacking sets

Cubes, shapes and stacking rings for the youngest children, often painted. US rules name blocks and stacking sets for under-3s in the small parts list, so each piece must stay outside the test cylinder.

Pull-along and push toys

Animals and vehicles on wheels with a cord or push handle. Cords and fastenings must pose no strangulation risk, and wheels and axles count under the small parts rule.

Inset and jigsaw puzzles

Inset boards and wooden jigsaws, often laser cut, which allows custom sizes and outlines without a die.

Pretend-play and educational sets

Kitchens, tools, counting frames and similar sets with many parts. Count the parts in the brief, since each small piece meets the age rules.

Painted figures and tops

Figures, nesting dolls and spinning tops in paint or stain. The coating is what the chemical tests examine, colour by colour.

How to brief a wooden toy manufacturer in Bangladesh

Wood
Solid timber, plywood or MDF, the species, and the moisture content you want stated at packing, as a percentage. Engineered boards bring a formaldehyde result into the tests.
Treatment and drying
Whether the wood is kiln-dried and how it is treated against fungus and insects; any preservative must be declared and tested.
Paint, stain or varnish
The finish for each colour. Results are taken on the coating as applied, so a change of paint means a new test.
Edges and grain
Rounded edges and sanded end grain, with the edge rounding you want in mm: EU rules ask that accessible edges and protrusions be designed to reduce injury.
Cords and fixings
Cord length in cm, and how wheels, pegs and axles are fixed: glue, pin or screw.
Age grade and market
Under 3 brings the small parts rule; US sharp point tests cover toys for children under 8.

Safety rules and tests for wooden toys

16 CFR 1303 (US lead in paint)
Bans children's articles bearing paint with more than 0.009 percent lead in the dried film. Ask for a result on each colour.
EN 71-3 and BDS ISO 8124-3
Migration of certain elements from the coating as applied. June 2026 Ministry of Industries notices, as reported, list ISO 8124-3 and the BSTI mark for toys sold in Bangladesh.
Formaldehyde in engineered wood (EU)
The EU caps formaldehyde from resin-bonded wood toy material in under-3 toys now; from 1 August 2030 the new Regulation sets 0.062 mg/m3 for wood toy material in all toys: plywood, MDF and glued parts.
EU edges and cords requirement
Edges, protrusions, cords and fastenings must be designed to reduce injury, without strangulation risk. Directive 2009/48/EC applies until Regulation (EU) 2025/2509 from 1 August 2030.

What moves the price of a wooden toy

  • Wood: solid timber against plywood or MDF, and the species chosen.
  • Finish: the number of paint colours and coats, or stain or a natural finish.
  • Parts and joinery: wheels, pegs, axles, cords and how each is fixed.
  • Shaping: laser-cut outlines, turning and sanding time per piece.
  • Tests per colour and material, for each market.
  • Packing: a box, net bag or shrink wrap, with inserts for multi-part sets.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on the wood and the finish. Wood that must be dried or treated before cutting takes longer than stock already kiln-dried, and a new paint colour needs its own test before bulk. Laser-cut outlines from a file can move faster than turned or shaped parts. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver to nurseries, schools, gift shops and offices in Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna or elsewhere, counted by carton and set, with the coating test reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying wooden toys for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), with invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin and a REX statement for EU GSP. For the EU, the maker keeps the technical file and declaration of conformity for 10 years and the importer keeps a copy. US children's toys need a Children's Product Certificate based on tests at a CPSC-accepted lab.

What we check for this order

  • Coating per colourEach colour's report covers the paint as applied on the finished toy, not a paint sample on its own.
  • Splinters and edgesBy eye and by hand, we check edges, end grain and corners for splinters and rough spots.
  • Paint adhesionPaint and varnish hold without flaking at corners and edges, checked by hand on sample pieces.
  • Small parts and cordsWheels, pegs and beads stay fixed on under-3 toys, and cords match the approved sample.

Questions buyers ask

Is rubberwood suitable for wooden toys?

Often, yes. Rubberwood is a plantation hardwood that is easy to work and takes stains evenly, and it is used for toys. It is not suited to outdoor use and is usually treated against fungus and insects and kiln-dried, so name the treatment in the order and have it declared and tested.

Do unpainted wooden toys still need tests?

Yes. Small parts, sharp points and edges, and cords are tested whatever the finish. Engineered wood can need a formaldehyde result under EU toy law, and any oil, wax or preservative is a coating to declare. Leaving wood unpainted reduces the chemical tests; it does not remove them.

Can pull-along toys be sold for babies?

Yes, if the design clears the rules for that age. US rules name pull and push toys for under-3s in the small parts rule, and EU rules require cords and fastenings to pose no strangulation risk. Give us the cord length and the youngest user before sampling.

How many colours need testing?

Every colour on the toy. Lead in paint and migration of elements are tested on each coating as applied, so a set in six colours needs six results. Fewer colours, or one finish across a range, cut the testing.

How soon will I hear back about toys and games?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
