Buying puzzles in Bangladesh

A puzzle is a printed picture cut into interlocking pieces. Most jigsaws are paperboard; puzzles for young children are usually wood or plastic, which stand up to handling. Importers order puzzles with their own artwork, and schools and shops in Dhaka buy learning puzzles. A puzzle manufacturer in Bangladesh needs three things from you first: the cut, the material and the youngest user.

Roptan writes the brief in a cutter's terms: grid, finished size, material and finish. We place it with a verified maker, approve a printed and cut sample with you, check that the report covers your board and inks, and inspect the boxed lot. You deal with Roptan only.

Kinds of puzzle

Paperboard jigsaw puzzles

Printed board die-cut by hardened steel blades set in the puzzle's pattern. The usual retail jigsaw; a new pattern means a new die, a one-time cost.

Wooden puzzles

Inset, tray and jigsaw puzzles in wood, usually laser cut. A laser needs no die and allows custom sizes and outlines, which suits short runs.

First puzzles

For the youngest children, often 4 to 9 large pieces in wood or board. For under-3s every piece and knob must stay outside the small parts cylinder.

Floor and family puzzles

Big pieces that build a picture on the floor, or mixed piece sizes so adults and children share one picture.

3D and acrylic puzzles

3D puzzles in wood or foam, and acrylic pieces, which are durable and waterproof, for gift and display ranges.

How to brief a puzzle manufacturer in Bangladesh

Piece grid
Give columns by rows, not only a count. A common 500-piece cut is 27 by 19, which makes 513, so the box claim and the cut should agree.
Finished size
Width and height of the assembled puzzle in cm, and the box size you want on the shelf.
Material and thickness
Paperboard, wood, plastic or acrylic, with board thickness and sheet count in the order so sample and bulk match.
Cutting
A stock pattern or a new one: a new board pattern needs its own die, while a laser follows a file.
Artwork, ink and varnish
Print-ready artwork with bleed, and the finish named. Coatings face migration tests on toy puzzles, so a change of finish can mean a new test.
Age grade and market
Under 3 brings the small parts rule. In the US a puzzle for children aged 3 to under 6 with small pieces must carry the CHOKING HAZARD warning.

Safety rules and tests for puzzles

16 CFR 1501 (US)
Names preschool toys, games and puzzles for children under 3, so no piece or knob may fit entirely inside the small parts cylinder.
EN 71 and EU toy law
EN 71-1, 71-2 and 71-3 test mechanical properties, flammability and migration of certain elements. Directive 2009/48/EC applies until Regulation (EU) 2025/2509 takes over on 1 August 2030.
Paper and wood chemistry
The EU caps formaldehyde in paper and resin-bonded wood toy material for under-3 toys now; from 1 August 2030 the new Regulation sets 30 mg/kg in paper and 0.062 mg/m3 emission from wood toy material for all toys.
BDS ISO 8124 in Bangladesh
June 2026 Ministry of Industries notices, as reported, list ISO 8124 parts on flammability and migration of certain elements, among others, plus the BSTI mark, for toys sold locally.

What moves the price of a puzzle

  • Cutting: a new board pattern needs a die, a one-time cost; laser cutting needs no die but uses machine time.
  • Piece count and size: more pieces and a bigger sheet mean more board and more cutting.
  • Material: wood or acrylic against paperboard, and the thickness chosen.
  • Print and finish: the number of colours and any varnish or special coating.
  • Box and inserts: a printed rigid box, a bag for the pieces, a picture guide.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends mostly on the cut and the artwork. A stock pattern on a known board moves faster than a new die or a new laser outline, and each round of print proofs adds days. Lab tests on a new board, ink or varnish add time before bulk. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver boxed puzzles to shops, schools and offices in Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet or elsewhere, counted by carton and box, with the test reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Learning puzzles for schools can be packed by class set on request.

Buying puzzles for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), with invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin and a REX statement for EU GSP. Children's puzzles for the US need a Children's Product Certificate based on tests at a CPSC-accepted lab, certificate data filed with US Customs, and tracking marks on the puzzle and its box.

What we check for this order

  • Piece count against the gridWe count a sample box against the agreed grid, so the number on the lid is what is inside.
  • Cut and small partsPieces fit and separate cleanly; on under-3 puzzles no piece or knob fits the small parts cylinder.
  • Report on your board and finishThe lab report names the board, inks and varnish actually used, not an earlier version of the puzzle.
  • Print and boxPrint matches the approved proof, and the box carries the age grade, warning and batch number.

Questions buyers ask

Why does a 500-piece puzzle sometimes have 513 pieces?

Because the cut is a grid. A common 500-piece pattern is 27 columns by 19 rows, which gives 513 pieces. Give us the grid you want, or the exact count, and we check the box claim against the cut before printing.

Should a children's puzzle be wood or board?

For very young children, puzzles are usually wood or plastic, which last longer under handling, with as few as 4 to 9 large pieces. Board suits older children and adults. Under-3 puzzles must clear the small parts rule either way.

Is an adult jigsaw a toy under EU law?

It depends on use. The new EU Regulation's customs list names puzzles with 500 pieces or less, but whether a puzzle is a toy turns on its play value and the use the maker intends. Tell us the target age, and we brief the tests to match.

Can you supply puzzles with our own artwork?

Yes. Send print-ready artwork and the finished size. On board, a stock cut avoids the cost of a new die; on wood or acrylic, a laser can follow your own outline. You approve a printed and cut sample before bulk.

How soon will I hear back about toys and games?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
