Buying plastic toys in Bangladesh
Plastic toys are shaped in moulds from resins such as PP, PE and ABS, or from soft PVC for dolls and figures. The trade runs from small figures and building sets to tricycles, scooters and pedal cars, bought by importers under their own label and by shops in Dhaka and Chattogram. A plastic toy manufacturer in Bangladesh starts from your mould, resin and age grade.
Roptan briefs the mould, resin and colours, places the order with a verified maker and approves first-off parts with you. We check that chemical results cover each material and colour, that edges and points were tested on finished parts, and that the packed lot matches the sample. You deal with Roptan only.
How to brief a plastic toy manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Mould
- New or existing, its material and cavity count. Tool steel is usual for production; aluminium or epoxy moulds suit prototypes and very short runs.
- Resin and grade
- Name the resin and grade for each part, so production uses the material that was tested.
- Colours
- List each colour and its masterbatch. Chemical results are per material and colour, so every extra colour adds a test.
- Parts and decoration
- A parts list with weights, plus any screws, wheels or axles, and each printing or sticker step.
- Age grade and market
- Under 3 brings the small parts rule; in the US, points and edges are tested on toys for children under 8.
Safety rules and tests for plastic toys
- 16 CFR 1500.48 (US)
- The sharp point test for toys for children under 8, including points exposed after foreseeable abuse. Flash, ejector marks and cracks are where they start.
- 16 CFR 1307 (US phthalates)
- Bans more than 0.1 percent of eight named phthalates in a children's toy. Soft PVC and vinyl parts carry most of this risk.
- Bisphenol A and PFAS (EU)
- EU toy law caps bisphenol A migration at 0.04 mg/l for under-3 toys now; from 1 August 2030 the new Regulation sets 0.005 mg/l for all toys and bans intentional use of PFAS.
- EN 71-2 and ISO 8124-2
- Flammability: a toy's materials must not burn when exposed to flame, or must go out or burn slowly.
- BDS ISO 8124 in Bangladesh
- June 2026 Ministry of Industries notices, as reported, list ISO 8124 parts on flammability, migration of certain elements, phthalates and microbiological safety, with the BSTI mark, for toys sold locally.
Lead times and delivery
The mould sets the time. A new colour in an existing mould is the quick route; a new steel mould is the slow one, and a prototype mould in aluminium or epoxy can bring the first sample forward. Trial shots, mould corrections and chemical tests per colour each add time before bulk. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh we deliver to shops, distributors and offices in Dhaka, Chattogram, Narayanganj or elsewhere, counted by carton and piece, with the test reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying plastic toys for export
For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), with invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin and a REX statement for EU GSP. US-bound children's toys need a Children's Product Certificate from tests at a CPSC-accepted lab and tracking marks on toy and pack. For winter shipments, ask how PP parts are protected, since PP turns brittle below 0 °C.
Questions buyers ask
Do we need a new mould for our design?
Yes, for a new shape: each shape needs its own mould. Tool steel is the usual production choice; aluminium or epoxy moulds cut cost and time for prototypes and short runs. Write into the order who owns the mould.
Which plastic should we choose for a toy?
It depends on the part. ABS is tough and resists impact, which suits building pieces and vehicle bodies. PP resists fatigue but turns brittle below 0 °C. Soft PVC gives dolls and squeeze toys their feel but draws the phthalate tests. Name the grade for every part.
Do sensory kits with water beads have extra rules?
In the US, yes. 16 CFR 1250.4 sets performance and labelling requirements for water bead toys and toys that contain them, on top of ASTM F963. Tell us early if a kit includes expanding beads so the lab tests to that rule.
Is a child's bicycle a toy?
Not always. Under EU toy law, children's cycles with a saddle height over 435 mm fall outside the toy rules, while tricycles, scooters and pedal cars sit in the toy customs list. Give us the saddle height and the age so the right tests are booked.
How soon will I hear back about toys and games?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
