Buying windbreakers in Bangladesh
A windbreaker, called a windcheater in the UK and India, is a thin, usually synthetic jacket that resists wind chill and light rain. It gives more warmth than a sweater and less than an overcoat. It is worn mostly in warmer seasons or as a layer in cold weather, and runners choose bright, reflective ones for safety.
Wind resistance and shower resistance are separate properties with separate tests, and neither shows on a hanger. A windbreaker manufacturer in Bangladesh should quote both for the bulk fabric. Roptan writes the targets into the order, sources from verified factories, reads the fabric reports and inspects the finished jackets before delivery.
How to brief a windbreaker manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Wind resistance
- A maximum air permeability to ISO 9237, with its unit, test area and pressure. No neutral body sets a windproof limit, so the number must come from you.
- Shower resistance
- Showerproof or waterproof, backed by a test and a value. A showerproof finish is not rated to a hydrostatic head and lets water through after a short time in rain.
- Repellent finish
- Its chemistry (fluorinated, silicone or hydrocarbon) and the ISO 4920 spray rating new and after a stated number of washes to ISO 6330, since the finish wears off.
- Shell fabric
- Fibre and weave: nylon or polyester, plain or ripstop. For thin ripstop, ask for tear force by the trouser test, ISO 13937-2.
- Lining
- Unlined, mesh or fabric. A lining in direct skin contact may need a stricter OEKO-TEX product class than the class for jackets, so ask which class the certificate covers.
Tests and standards for windbreakers
- ISO 9237
- Measures the permeability of fabrics to air. For a windbreaker, a lower result means more wind resistance; state the maximum you accept.
- ISO 4920 and ISO 811
- The spray test rates surface wetting and does not predict rain penetration; the hydrostatic test measures water penetration. Quote ISO 4920 for a repellent claim and ISO 811 for water resistance.
- Regulation (EU) 2024/2462
- From 10 October 2026 it limits PFHxA, its salts and related substances in textiles in clothing for the general public, so an EU-bound windbreaker with a fluorinated repellent needs a test report.
Lead times and delivery
Sample rounds usually take four to six weeks in all. One sourcing guide gives 90 to 130 days from order to FOB for complex wovens, and a technical shell imported from abroad usually adds three to four weeks; a custom colour, a new repellent finish or hi-vis certification adds test rounds. Order staff jackets well before the June to September monsoon. Roptan confirms dates and the minimum per style and colour in the quote.
Roptan delivers windbreakers to offices, schools, clubs and stores across Bangladesh, from Dhaka and Gazipur to Sylhet and Khulna, packed per person, size or branch. Each delivery carries the packing list, the fabric test and inspection reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying windbreakers for export
Woven windbreakers usually enter under HS 6201 or 6202, whose wording names wind-cheaters and wind-jackets; knitted ones go to 6101 or 6102, and those in fabric coated or laminated with plastics or rubber to 6210. Your broker confirms the subheading. For the US, an all-nylon or all-polyester shell is exempt from 16 CFR 1610 flammability testing; a blended shell is tested. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong).
Questions buyers ask
Is a windbreaker waterproof?
Usually not. A windbreaker resists light rain, often through a repellent finish that wears off with time, and in steady rain water gets through. A garment sold as waterproof has a water-repellent coating and taped seams, so if you need that, specify it with a hydrostatic head.
Is a windcheater the same as a windbreaker?
Yes, as a product. Windcheater is the word used in the UK and some Commonwealth countries, including India. The older windcheater was closer to a pullover anorak, so write pullover or zip-front in the brief to get the form you want.
How windproof should the fabric be?
No neutral body publishes a pass limit, so set your own. State a maximum air permeability to ISO 9237 with the test conditions, compare quotes on that figure, and have it checked on the bulk fabric rather than the sample.
Do EU-bound windbreakers need a fluorine-free finish?
From 10 October 2026, Regulation (EU) 2024/2462 limits PFHxA and related substances in textiles in clothing sold to the public in the EU. Fluorine-free repellents include silicone and hydrocarbon finishes, which some researchers say can perform comparably. PFOA is limited separately under the EU POPs Regulation. Ask for the finish chemistry or a test report.
How soon will I hear back about jackets and outerwear?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
