Buying wet blue in Bangladesh
Wet blue is chrome-tanned leather that has not been dried, dyed or finished: still moist and greyish blue. Chrome tanning accounts for about 85 to 90 percent of modern leather making, so wet blue is the common traded half-way stage. Importers usually buy it to avoid the disease risk of raw hides, choose their selection and finish it themselves.
Bangladesh's bovine wet blue exports are almost all splits, mostly to India, Vietnam and China (EPB, FY2025-26). As your wet blue supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan agrees the selection, basis of sale and moisture with a verified tannery, then checks the sort and the wrapping before the lot ships.
How to brief a wet blue supplier in Bangladesh
- Animal and hide form
- Cow, buffalo, goat or sheep, and whole hides, sides or splits. Customs wet blue lines name each animal group, with buffalo counted as bovine.
- Selection
- The quality range you want, and sample sorting results. Wet blue is sorted at the first quality control point, and the tannery must place its other grades.
- Basis of sale
- By area or by weight, with the moisture taken into account. Fix one basis before comparing quotes.
- Moisture and preservative
- Wet blue is usually kept at around 60 percent moisture and treated against microbial attack for transit. Ask which preservative was used and confirm the moisture.
- Thickness and area
- Your thickness range to ISO 2589 and area to ISO 11646, measured the same way at both ends.
- Storage time
- At the right moisture, wet blue can usually be kept up to about six months.
Customs lines, tests and certificates for wet blue
- HS 4104, 4105 and 4106 wet-state lines
- Customs lines 'in the wet state (including wet-blue)' for bovine, sheep and goat. Use this wording on documents so the lot is declared as wet blue.
- ISO 17075-1 or ISO 17075-2
- Chromium VI by the colorimetric (Part 1) or chromatographic (Part 2) method, both 2017. REACH limits chromium VI in leather articles to 3 mg/kg.
- ISO 4044, ISO 4045 and ISO 2418
- Chemical sample preparation, pH and difference figure, and where specimens are cut. Ask which sampling position a report used.
- LWG certification
- Valid for two years and held by the tannery that tanned the wet blue; a trader audit covers only the trader's warehouse.
Lead times and delivery
Wet blue is not made to one customer's colour, so it does not wait for a finishing batch; timing depends on how much of your selection the tannery has sorted. After Eid ul-Adha, hides flood in and the Savar effluent plant runs at its peak, which can slow tanneries. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers wet blue to your tannery wrapped so it stays moist, with the sorting list, the weight or area per pallet and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Agree how long the lot may wait before you process it.
Buying wet blue for export
Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram for wet blue wrapped moist and treated for the voyage. Bovine wet blue is declared under heading 4104 'in the wet state (including wet-blue)', goat under 4106 and sheep under 4105. Documents include the commercial invoice, a packing list with selection and weight or area, a certificate of origin, a REX statement for EU GSP or UK DCTS where it applies, and any chromium VI report.
Questions buyers ask
Why buy wet blue rather than crust?
Wet blue leaves the retanning, dyeing and finishing to you, so one lot can become several end products, and you set the selection. Crust is dry and easier to ship, but its retanning is done. Buy wet blue if your tannery wants control of those steps.
How long can wet blue be stored?
Up to about six months, according to one technical reference, if it is kept at around 60 percent moisture; if it dries it can stain. Confirm the storage time and moisture for your lot with the tannery, and plan the voyage and your processing within it.
Does chrome tanning matter for chemical tests?
Chromium III used in tanning is much less toxic than chromium VI, but heat and sun can turn it into chromium VI. The REACH limit applies to leather articles, so your finished goods must pass; if the wet blue was dried or stored hot, test the lot to ISO 17075-1 or ISO 17075-2.
Can Roptan source wet white instead?
Ask for it in your enquiry. Wet white is the chrome-free half-way stage, made with aldehydes or metal salts, and it interests buyers who must avoid chromium. Roptan checks whether a tannery in Bangladesh offers it before quoting.
How soon will I hear back about finished leather?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
