Buying finished cow leather in Bangladesh
Finished leather is crust given its final surface: an aniline dye on full grain, a buffed and embossed corrected grain, or a sanded nubuck. It is made to one type, colour and thickness for each product, usually for each customer. Cow hides go mainly into heavier shoe uppers, furniture and car upholstery, and bags.
Customs counts buffalo as cow, and an approved swatch is not the bulk. As your finished cow leather supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan names the animal in the order, agrees the finish against a swatch, has the bulk colour lot tested and checks the leather before dispatch.
How to brief a finished cow leather supplier in Bangladesh
- Animal and hide form
- Cow, buffalo or either, and whole hides or sides. Tariff lines usually split whole bovine hides at 28 square feet (2.6 square metres).
- Grain and finish
- Full grain, corrected grain, nubuck or your own finish, with a physical swatch, since each lot is made to one type and colour.
- Colour and reorders
- A physical colour standard. Finishing runs in batches per colour, so a reorder usually comes from a new batch and needs its own swatch approval.
- Thickness and area
- Your thickness range to ISO 2589 and the area in square feet to ISO 11646, with the measuring method and a tolerance in the contract.
- Article and test list
- Shoe upper, lining, bag or upholstery, with your brand manual, since the tests that apply and their pass marks depend on the article.
- Selection
- Reference pieces for each grade, since sorters judge defects, thickness, handle and shade, and grading is largely subjective.
Tests and certificates for finished cow leather
- ISO 5402-1, ISO 11640 and ISO 11644
- Flex resistance, rub fastness and finish adhesion: they show whether a finish cracks, rubs off or peels.
- ISO 3376 and ISO 3377-2
- Tensile strength with elongation, and double edge tear load, on pieces cut from your lot as ISO 2418 sets out.
- ISO 17075-1 or ISO 17075-2
- Chromium VI, colorimetric or chromatographic method, both 2017. REACH sets a limit of 3 mg/kg chromium VI in leather articles.
- ISO 17234-1 and ISO 17226-1
- Azo colourants and formaldehyde in leather, tested on each bulk colour lot where your market restricts them.
- LWG certification
- Valid for two years and held by the facility, so it must name the tannery that finished your lot, not a trader.
Lead times and delivery
There is no fixed lead time. A finish in your colour runs as its own batch, usually for one customer, after a swatch is approved, so it takes longer than stock leather, and that batch usually sets the minimum. Around Eid ul-Adha, Savar's tanneries are usually at their busiest. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.
Roptan delivers in Bangladesh to your cutting room, rolled or folded as agreed, with tickets per bundle for colour, lot, area and thickness, the measurement list, the bulk lot's lab reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying finished cow leather for export
For importers, Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong). Finished cow and buffalo leather is declared under HS heading 4107, with grain splits on their own subheadings. Documents include the commercial invoice, a packing list by colour and lot, a certificate of origin, a REX statement for EU GSP or UK DCTS where it applies, lab reports and the tannery's LWG certificate if required.
Questions buyers ask
What is the difference between full-grain and corrected-grain leather?
Full grain keeps the whole grain layer and is typically finished with an aniline dye, so natural markings show. Corrected grain has its flaws buffed or sanded away and is then dyed and embossed, so it looks more even. Choose by how the article will be seen and used.
Who sets the pass marks for the tests?
Your buyer or your brand manual. ISO methods such as ISO 5402-1 for flex say how to test, not which result passes. Send the manual with your enquiry, and Roptan has each lab report checked against its limits for your bulk lot.
Will a reorder match my first lot?
Not automatically. Finishing is done in batches for one type and colour, so a reorder usually comes from a new batch. Keep a cut piece of the approved lot, send it with the reorder and approve a swatch from the new batch first.
Can I get buffalo instead of cow?
Yes, if you ask for it. Customs headings for finished cow leather cover bovine animals, including buffalo, so both travel under heading 4107. State the animal you want, or that either is acceptable, and Roptan checks it against the invoice.
How soon will I hear back about finished leather?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
