Buying split leather in Bangladesh
Split leather is the fibrous corium left when the top grain is split off a hide. A thick hide can be split again into a middle and a flesh split. With no grain layer, a split is either sueded or coated and embossed to look like grain. EPB data for FY2025-26 label almost all of Bangladesh's bovine wet blue exports as split leather.
Buyers are tanneries that finish splits, and makers of shoes, bags, jackets, linings and upholstery. As your split leather supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan writes the layer, stage and finish into the order, has strength tested on your lot and checks that the invoice line matches what you bought.
How to brief a split leather supplier in Bangladesh
- Layer
- Drop split, middle split, flesh split or grain split. Name the layer, since a split has no grain and its use depends on where it was cut.
- Stage
- Wet blue, crust or finished. Customs headings for all three read 'whether or not split', so the stage alone does not tell you the layer.
- Finish
- Suede, or coated and embossed; for coated splits, the coating type and grain pattern, with a physical sample of each.
- Thickness range
- Your range in millimetres, measured to ISO 2589 at agreed points on the split.
- Strength
- Tensile (ISO 3376) and double edge tear (ISO 3377-2) values from your manual, tested on your lot, since a split has no grain layer and is usually weaker than grain leather.
- Area
- Square feet measured to ISO 11646, with the method and a tolerance agreed, as on any leather sold by area.
Tests and certificates for split leather
- ISO 3376 and ISO 3377-2
- Tensile strength with elongation, and double edge tear load, cut from your lot at the position ISO 2418 sets.
- ISO 5402-1, ISO 11640 and ISO 11644
- Flex resistance, rub fastness and finish adhesion: the surface tests to ask for on coated and suede splits.
- ISO 17075-1 or ISO 17075-2
- Chromium VI by Part 1 (colorimetric) or Part 2 (chromatographic), 2017. Most Bangladeshi split exports are chrome-tanned wet blue.
- LWG certification
- Valid for two years and held by the tannery that made the leather; a trader audit covers only the trader's warehouse.
Lead times and delivery
Wet blue splits already sorted can move sooner than a finished split, which needs its own suede or coating batch for your colour and a sample approved first; that batch usually sets the minimum. Around Eid ul-Adha, hide supply and the load on the Savar effluent plant peak, which can slow tanneries. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers splits to your tannery or factory: wet blue splits wrapped so they stay moist, crust and finished splits dry and ticketed with layer, colour, lot, area and thickness. You receive the measurement list, lab reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying split leather for export
Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram. Splits are declared under the heading for their stage, 4104 for bovine wet blue and crust or 4107 for finished, since each reads 'whether or not split', and finished grain splits have their own subheadings. Documents include the commercial invoice, a packing list by lot, a certificate of origin, a REX statement for EU GSP or UK DCTS where it applies, and lab reports.
Questions buyers ask
What is the difference between split leather and top grain?
Top grain is the upper layer of the hide, with its grain surface. Split leather is the fibrous layer below, with no grain, so it is finished as suede or coated and embossed to look like grain. A split is usually weaker than grain leather, so test it for your article.
Are Bangladeshi wet blue exports mostly splits?
Yes. EPB data for FY2025-26 label almost all bovine wet blue exports as split leather, while crust exports are recorded almost entirely as excluding splits. India, Vietnam and China took most of the split wet blue. Order grain wet blue by name if you need it.
How can I tell a coated split from grain leather?
Ask for the layer in writing on the quote and invoice. A coated split has no grain under its coating: the grain look is applied and embossed. Roptan checks the layer on sample bundles and has finish adhesion tested to ISO 11644, since the coating carries the whole surface.
Is suede made from splits?
Some is. Suede is made from the underside of the skin, mostly lamb, also goat and calf, and splits from thick cow hides are sueded too, with a shaggy nap. Say whether you want split suede, and approve a sample for nap and colour.
How soon will I hear back about finished leather?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
