Buying goat leather in Bangladesh
Goat leather, long sold as kid or Morocco leather, usually goes into gloves, boots, lighter shoes, garments and small goods that need a soft skin. Customs files it apart from cow and sheep: heading 4106 for tanned or crust goat, 4113 for finished. In EPB data for FY2025-26, crust made up 97.4 percent of Bangladesh's tanned or crust goat exports.
Worldwide, goats give roughly 11 percent of leather. As your goat leather supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan finds a tannery that works goat in the stage you need, agrees the article and tests with you, has tear strength measured on your lot and checks the leather before dispatch.
How to brief a goat leather supplier in Bangladesh
- Stage
- Wet blue, crust or finished. Most Bangladeshi goat exports are crust, so a finished order means asking a tannery to finish it for you.
- Article and handle
- Glove, garment, shoe upper, lining or small goods, and the softness you need, which can be measured to ISO 17235.
- Thickness range
- The range in millimetres, measured to ISO 2589. Nappa or kid alone does not fix a thickness.
- Tear and tensile strength
- Double edge tear (ISO 3377-2) and tensile strength (ISO 3376) values from your manual, tested on your lot rather than assumed from the animal.
- Area
- Square feet measured to ISO 11646, with the method and a tolerance in the contract, since you pay for area.
- Surface and colour
- Aniline on full grain, nubuck or suede, with a physical colour standard. A colour of your own is finished as a separate batch.
Tests and certificates for goat leather
- ISO 3377-2 and ISO 3376
- Double edge tear load (2025 edition) and tensile strength with elongation (2020). Tear results have varied between studies, so test your lot.
- ISO 17235 and ISO 11641
- Softness, and colour fastness to perspiration: the tests glove and garment buyers usually add for leather worn against skin.
- ISO 17075-1 or ISO 17075-2
- Chromium VI, Part 1 colorimetric or Part 2 chromatographic, both 2017. REACH limits chromium VI in leather articles to 3 mg/kg.
- LWG certification
- Valid for two years and tied to the tannery. LWG's online search lists certified suppliers by country, material and tanning type.
Lead times and delivery
Goat crust already in stock moves sooner than a finish made for you, which runs as its own batch for one colour and customer after a swatch is approved, and that batch usually sets the minimum. After Eid ul-Adha, skins flood in, quality varies and tanneries are loaded. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.
Roptan delivers goat leather anywhere in Bangladesh, in bundles ticketed with colour, lot, area and thickness, with the measurement list, lab reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Dry leather usually holds about 14 percent moisture; leather left conditioned for softening can mould in monsoon storage, so moisture is checked at packing.
Buying goat leather for export
Goat crust and wet blue are declared under HS heading 4106 and finished goat under 4113. In FY2025-26, China took 69.1 percent of the main goat crust line, followed by Taiwan, Italy and Japan. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram with the commercial invoice, a packing list by lot, a certificate of origin, a REX statement for EU GSP or UK DCTS where it applies, and lab reports.
Questions buyers ask
Is goat leather the same as kid leather?
Kid leather comes from young goats and has long been used for gloves, shoes and accessories, so all kid is goat but not all goat is kid. The word is not a test, so state the thickness, softness and strength you need.
What does nappa mean on a goat leather quote?
Nappa is a trade term for soft full-grain leather, used for calf, lamb and kid goat. It names no test, so two nappa quotes can differ. Write the thickness range, finish and test values into your enquiry and compare quotes on those.
Is Bangladeshi goat leather mostly sold finished?
No. In EPB data for FY2025-26, 97.4 percent of tanned or crust goat exports were crust, mostly to China, and the finished goat line was small. For finished goat, Roptan approaches tanneries that will finish crust to your swatch, and the first lot usually needs a sample round.
Can Roptan source goat leather for gloves?
Yes. Give the thickness range, softness and colour fastness to perspiration you need; ISO 11641 tests that fastness. Roptan matches the request to tanneries working goat, approves a sample piece with you and checks the bulk against it.
How soon will I hear back about finished leather?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
