Buying sheep leather in Bangladesh
Sheep leather here means wool-off leather. Sheepskin tanned with its fleece on is a different product, and the customs headings for sheep leather, 4105 for tanned or crust and 4112 for finished, cover skins without wool. Lamb gives soft leather for apparel and is the main raw material for suede; sheep skins also go into lighter shoes and gloves.
Bangladesh exports little sheep leather: EPB lines for FY2025-26 show small lots of wet skins to China and Mexico and crust to Japan. As your sheep leather supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan checks which tannery works sheep in the stage you need, agrees the article and tests with you and checks the leather before it leaves.
How to brief a sheep leather supplier in Bangladesh
- Wool off
- Write wool-off sheep or lamb leather. Wool-on sheepskin falls outside the sheep leather headings, and a loose enquiry can draw the wrong quotes.
- Lamb or sheep
- Say which, since lamb is usually chosen for soft apparel leather and for suede.
- Stage and finish
- Wet, crust or finished; for finished leather, full grain, nappa or suede, with a physical swatch of colour and handle.
- Thickness range
- The range in millimetres for your article, measured to ISO 2589 at agreed points, rather than a trade name.
- Strength on the lot
- Tensile (ISO 3376) and double edge tear (ISO 3377-2) values from your manual, tested on your lot, not assumed from the animal.
- Area
- Square feet measured to ISO 11646, with the method and a tolerance in the contract, because the price is per foot.
Tests and certificates for sheep leather
- ISO 17235 and ISO 11641
- Softness, and colour fastness to perspiration: the tests garment and glove buyers usually add for leather worn against skin.
- ISO 3376 and ISO 3377-2
- Tensile strength with elongation, and double edge tear load, on pieces cut from your lot at the position ISO 2418 sets.
- ISO 17075-1 or ISO 17075-2
- Chromium VI by Part 1 (colorimetric) or Part 2 (chromatographic), both 2017. REACH sets a 3 mg/kg limit for chromium VI in leather articles.
- LWG certification
- Held by the tannery and valid for two years. Check that the certificate names the tannery that tanned your leather, not a trader.
Lead times and delivery
Bangladesh exports little sheep leather, so finding a tannery that works it can take longer than for cow or goat. A colour or finish of your own runs as its own batch, usually for one customer, after a swatch is approved, and that batch usually sets the minimum. Savar's tanneries are usually at their busiest around Eid ul-Adha. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers sheep leather in ticketed bundles showing colour, lot, area and thickness, with the measurement list, lab reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Moisture is checked at packing: dry leather usually holds about 14 percent, and leather left conditioned at 18 to 22 percent can harden and mould.
Buying sheep leather for export
Sheep leather is declared under HS heading 4105 when tanned or crust and 4112 when finished, both for skins without wool. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram with the commercial invoice, a packing list by colour and lot, a certificate of origin, a REX statement for EU GSP or UK DCTS where it applies, and lab reports for the lot.
Questions buyers ask
Do you supply wool-on sheepskin?
This page covers wool-off sheep leather. Sheepskin tanned with the fleece on is a different product, outside the customs headings for sheep leather. If you need wool-on skins, send a separate enquiry so it reaches tanneries that make them.
Is lamb nappa a standard grade?
No. Nappa is a trade term for soft full-grain leather from lamb, calf or kid goat, and it has no test of its own. Specify the animal, thickness range, finish and the tests you need, and compare quotes on those values rather than the name.
Does Bangladesh export much sheep leather?
Very little. In EPB data for FY2025-26, sheep lines were small next to cow and goat: wet skins went to China and Mexico, crust to Japan and a little finished leather to Pakistan. Roptan checks which tannery can work sheep in your stage before quoting.
Which tests matter for sheep garment leather?
Usually softness (ISO 17235), colour fastness to perspiration (ISO 11641) and to rubbing (ISO 11640), tensile and tear strength, and chromium VI to ISO 17075-1 or ISO 17075-2. Your brand manual sets which apply and the pass marks; Roptan matches each report to the lot.
How soon will I hear back about finished leather?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
