Buying cow crust leather in Bangladesh

Crust is leather that has been tanned, then retanned, coloured or fat-liquored and dried, but not finished; customs defines it in the same words. Being dry, it ships more easily than wet blue, and its surface can be judged before grading. Tanneries and finishers at home and abroad buy it to apply their own finish.

Crust is usually developed for one buyer, since its tightness, softness and response to finishing decide how your finish behaves. As your cow crust leather supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan writes the animal, tannage and selection into the order, has the crust sorted against reference pieces you approve and checks moisture before packing.

Kinds of cow crust leather

Chrome-tanned crust

Wet blue that has been retanned, dyed or fat-liquored and dried. Chrome tanning accounts for about 85 to 90 percent of modern leather making, so most crust starts this way.

Vegetable-tanned crust

The older tannage, brown in its natural colour, usually chosen for belts, some upholstery and sole leather. It is not traded wet, so buying usually starts at crust.

Full-grain crust

Crust with the full grain kept. EPB records almost none of it among Bangladeshi crust exports, so ask early whether a tannery can sort enough.

Crust other than full grain

The line that carries almost all Bangladeshi cow crust exports in EPB data, recorded as excluding split leather. Ask how the grain was treated; the customs label does not say.

Buffalo crust

Customs headings for cow leather read bovine, including buffalo, so buffalo crust can travel under the same line. Write the animal you accept into the order.

How to brief a cow crust leather supplier in Bangladesh

Animal
Cow, buffalo or either. Customs treats both as bovine, so an order that says only cow can arrive as buffalo.
Tannage and route
Chrome or vegetable tannage, and whether you will retan the crust again or go straight to dry finishing.
Whole hides or sides
Say which, and the size: tariff lines usually split whole bovine hides at 28 square feet (2.6 square metres).
Selection and reference pieces
A reference piece per grade, not a letter alone. Sorters judge cutting area, defects, break and handle, and much of that is subjective.
Thickness range
Your range in millimetres, measured to ISO 2589. Sorters check actual thickness in tenths of a millimetre.
Area and tolerance
Square feet measured to ISO 11646, with the method and a tolerance in the contract, since area is what you pay for.
Moisture at packing
Dry leather usually holds about 14 percent moisture. Leather conditioned to 18 to 22 percent can harden and grow mould in the monsoon.

Tests and certificates for cow crust

ISO 2418 sampling
Sets where test pieces are cut. Leather varies across a hide, so ask which position each report used before comparing tanneries.
ISO 3376 and ISO 3377-2
Tensile strength with elongation, and double edge tear load. Ask for both on your bulk lot, not a tannery data sheet.
ISO 17075-1 or ISO 17075-2
Chromium VI in leather, by the colorimetric (Part 1) or chromatographic (Part 2) method, both 2017. Heat and sun in drying can turn chromium III into chromium VI.
LWG certification
Leather Working Group certification, valid for two years. It belongs to the facility, so the certificate must name the tannery that made your lot.

What moves the price of cow crust leather

  • Selection mix: the grades you take, and what the tannery does with the rest, are a main price driver.
  • Development: crust built for your finishing route needs more technical work than crust sold as it comes.
  • Grain: full-grain crust is rare in Bangladeshi exports, so asking for it narrows the tanneries that can quote.
  • Season: hide supply and quality swing around Eid ul-Adha.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends first on whether the crust is in stock or made for you. Crust developed for your finishing route runs as its own batch, which takes longer and usually sets the minimum. After Eid ul-Adha, hides flood in and quality varies. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

Roptan delivers crust anywhere in Bangladesh, in bundles ticketed with area, thickness, selection and lot and checked dry at packing, with the measurement list, lab reports for the lot and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying cow crust leather for export

Cow crust leaves Bangladesh mostly under HS heading 4104 as dry crust other than full grain; in EPB data for FY2025-26, 58.5 percent of that line went to China, then Spain, India and Italy. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram with a packing list by lot, a certificate of origin, a REX statement for EU GSP or UK DCTS where it applies, and the tannery's LWG certificate if required.

What we check for this order

  • Animal written downThe order and invoice name cow, buffalo or either, since customs treats both as bovine.
  • Sort against reference piecesSample bundles are checked against your reference pieces for defects, break, handle and thickness.
  • Dry at packingThe crust is at normal dry moisture, not conditioned, before it is packed for a humid journey.
  • Papers match the lotThe LWG certificate names the tannery that made the crust, and lab reports carry the bulk lot number.

Questions buyers ask

Is cow crust leather dyed?

Not always. Under the customs definition, crust has been retanned, coloured or fat-liquored before drying, so it can be dyed or left natural. Say which you need, and approve a sample piece before the bulk is sorted.

Why buy crust instead of wet blue?

Crust is dry, so it ships more easily and you can judge its surface before you buy, while wet blue must stay moist. The retanning is done, so you can go straight to dry finishing. Wet blue suits a tannery that wants to control retanning and dyeing itself.

Will I get buffalo if I order cow crust?

You can, unless the order says otherwise. Customs headings for cow leather cover bovine animals, including buffalo, so a tannery may ship buffalo under the same line. Write cow, buffalo or either in your enquiry, and Roptan checks it against the invoice.

What is the minimum order for cow crust?

It depends on the batch. Crust made for your finishing route runs as its own batch, usually for one customer, and that batch usually sets the minimum. Stock crust can come in smaller lots, and Roptan states the figure in the quote.

How soon will I hear back about finished leather?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
