Buying VRF systems in Bangladesh

A VRF system links one outdoor unit, or a bank of them, to many indoor units through refrigerant pipes, and its variable-speed compressor follows the combined demand of the rooms. It fits hotels, offices and apartment blocks where rooms run at different times. Large single halls such as gyms or theatres are usually better served by other systems.

Kinds of VRF system

Heat pump (two-pipe) systems

All indoor units on one outdoor bank cool at the same time, or heat at the same time. Ask whether any room ever needs heat while others cool; if none does, this is the simpler system.

Heat recovery (three-pipe) systems

Some rooms can heat while others cool, and heat rejected in one zone is moved to another. It costs more to buy, so ask the seller to show which rooms would use it.

Mixed indoor units

Indoor units come as ceiling cassettes, consoles, concealed ducted and floor-standing types, and one outdoor bank can usually serve a mix. List each room with its indoor unit type.

Fresh air indoor units

A treated fresh air unit is usually available on the same system. Without it, or a separate ventilation plant, the building gets no outside air, because ordinary VRF indoor units only recirculate.

How to brief a VRF system supplier in Bangladesh

Capacity in kW or TR: State cooling capacity in kW or TR (1 TR is 3.517 kW) at named indoor and outdoor conditions. The HP figure on a quote is usually a trade label, not a capacity.
Site design temperature: In Dhaka the April mean daily maximum is about 34 °C and the record is about 42 °C. Ask for capacity at your site design temperature, not at a mild rating point.
Moisture load: Dhaka's average relative humidity is about 82 to 83 percent from June to September. Ask for sensible and latent capacity separately, so moisture removal is visible.
Pipe length and riser height: Give the height between outdoor and indoor units and the run to the farthest unit. Both reduce delivered capacity, and each model has its own limits.
Part-load efficiency: Variable-speed compressors and fans usually turn down to about a third of full output. Ask for efficiency at part load, not only the full-load figure.
Refrigerant and charge: Ask for the refrigerant, its safety class and the charge per system in writing. R-32 is described as mildly flammable; R-410A has a high global warming potential.

Ratings and rules to ask about

AHRI 1230: The US performance rating standard for VRF multi-split equipment, cited in 2010 and 2021 editions. Ask for the certificate of the exact model and the edition used.
EN 14511 and EN 14825: European rating methods for air conditioners and heat pumps, multisplit systems included; EN 14825 covers part-load testing.
EN 378-1: Sets the safety and environmental basis for refrigerating systems, including refrigerant charge in occupied buildings. The current text is the 2016 edition with its 2021 amendment.
Kigali Amendment: Bangladesh ratified this HFC phase-down under the Montreal Protocol on 8 June 2020. Ask how the seller will supply refrigerant and spares as HFC supply falls.

Heat recovery instead of heat pump, which costs more to buy.
Total refrigerant pipe length, branch kits and riser height, which add copper and labour.
The number and type of indoor units, from cassettes to concealed ducted units.

Lead times and delivery

Questions buyers ask

Is VRF a good choice for a large hall?

Usually not. VRF suits buildings with many rooms that run at different times, such as hotels and offices. Large uniform spaces such as gyms or theatres suit it less well. A small building may do better with a smaller heat pump system.

Does a VRF system bring in fresh air?

No. Its indoor units recirculate room air and do not filter fine dust. Outside air has to come from a treated fresh air unit or a separate ventilation system, and that choice changes how much space the project saves.

How many indoor units can one outdoor unit serve?

It depends on the model. Each maker sets the number of indoor units, the total pipe length and the height limits in its engineering data. Give the seller your floor plans and riser height, and ask for a pipe layout inside the quoted model's limits.

Which refrigerant should a new VRF system use?

Ask for it in writing. Some systems sold in Bangladesh use R-410A, a blend with a high global warming potential; R-32 is used as a substitute and is mildly flammable. Bangladesh has ratified the Kigali Amendment, so ask how refrigerant and spares will be supplied.

How soon will I hear back about HVAC systems?
