Buying rooftop packaged units in Bangladesh
A rooftop packaged unit holds the compressor, condenser, evaporator coil, fan and filters in one weatherproof casing on the roof, with supply and return ducted down into the space. It is also called a packaged or roof-mounted unit. Malls, restaurants, supermarkets, factories and offices use them, and single-storey buildings with a flat roof and no plant room are the usual fit.
A packaged unit arrives as one machine, so the offer stands or falls on what is inside the casing. As your rooftop packaged unit supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan sends one brief with your design conditions, roof details and refrigerant rule to verified sellers and compares what comes back. The seller installs and commissions the unit; we deliver it.
How to specify a rooftop packaged unit
- Capacity at site conditions
- State cooling in kW or TR (1 TR is 3.517 kW) at your design temperature. Dhaka's April mean daily maximum is about 34 °C and the record about 42 °C.
- Sensible and latent split
- Dhaka's relative humidity averages about 82 to 83 percent from June to September, so ask for sensible and latent capacity separately.
- Airflow and duct pressure
- Ask for supply airflow in m³/h and the duct static pressure the fan is selected for, and check both against your duct design.
- Fresh air damper
- Say how much outside air the unit must take for ventilation, in m³/h. More outside air in the monsoon means more moisture for the coil to remove, so the figure changes the selection.
- Weather and roof
- Ask for casing, coil and panel finishes, door seals and drains built for driving monsoon rain and standing water. The seller confirms roof loading and the lifting plan.
- Filters
- State the filter class and a way to read pressure drop, since Dhaka's dust usually loads filters quickly.
Ratings and tests to ask for
- AHRI 340/360 and AHRI 210/240
- US rating standards for unitary equipment: 340/360 for commercial units from about 19 kW, 210/240 below that. Ask which one, and which edition, sits behind the quoted figures.
- EER, IEER and IVEC
- US efficiency descriptors that are not interchangeable: older sheets give EER and IEER, newer ones EER2 and IVEC. Ask for the descriptor beside every number.
- EN 14511 and EN 12102-1
- The European rating method for packaged units and the sound power method, both in 2022 editions. Part-load testing sits in EN 14825.
- ISO 16890-1
- Classes ventilation filters by particle efficiency and replaced EN 779:2012 in 2017. Ask for the ePM class of the filters fitted.
Lead times and delivery
Time to site depends on whether a unit of the right capacity and refrigerant is in stock in Bangladesh or imported to order, on clearance at Chattogram, and on the crane, roof frame and duct openings being ready. Insisting on a current refrigerant may narrow what is in stock. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum in the quote.
We deliver to site anywhere in Bangladesh. The seller lifts the unit onto the roof, connects and seals it to the ducts and commissions it, recording airflow, fan speed and filter pressure drop. Handover includes refrigerant test records, a noise reading at the nearest occupied space, manuals, warranty papers and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Questions buyers ask
Is an R-22 rooftop unit a sensible buy?
No. Bangladesh is phasing out HCFCs such as R-22, and its Stage-2 plan aimed to cut consumption by 67.5 percent by 2025. Bangladesh has also ratified the Kigali HFC phase-down, so ask which refrigerant the unit uses and how it will be serviced over its life.
Should I choose air-cooled or water-cooled?
Air-cooled, unless the site already runs a cooling tower. A water-cooled unit needs a cooling tower and water treatment, which add plant, water use and maintenance. Ask sellers to price a water-cooled option only where that plant exists or is planned.
Should I pay for heating on a rooftop unit?
Only if you will use it. Packaged units can heat with electric strip heaters, gas heaters or a heat pump cycle, each at extra cost. Dhaka's coolest month has a mean daily maximum of about 25 °C, so ask the designer how many heating hours to expect.
How noisy is a roof unit?
It varies by model, so ask. Units outdoors can draw neighbour complaints for noise, vibration and exhaust. Ask for sound power measured to EN 12102-1 before ordering, and a noise reading at the nearest occupied space after commissioning.
How soon will I hear back about HVAC systems?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the capacity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
