Buying precision air conditioners in Bangladesh

A precision air conditioner, also called a computer room air conditioner (CRAC), holds temperature and humidity for IT equipment; its chilled water version is the computer room air handler (CRAH). Most of a server room's load is sensible heat, so these units are compared on net sensible capacity. Bangladesh already runs certified rooms: the Bangladesh Computer Council's national data centre at Kaliakoir holds Uptime Institute Tier IV certification, and several Dhaka sites hold Tier III.

As your precision air conditioner supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan sends verified sellers one brief with the IT load, the target at the server inlet and the redundancy you want, then compares net sensible kW and power input side by side. The seller installs, tests and commissions the units; Roptan delivers them.

Kinds of precision air conditioner

Down-flow units

Air returns above the coil and discharges below, into a raised floor. Choose them for raised-floor rooms, with floor grilles placed so the air reaches every rack evenly.

Up-flow, ceiling and wall units

Up-flow units, ducted or not, discharge upwards; ceiling and wall units save floor space. Choose them where there is no floor void or the room is small.

DX and chilled water units

A DX unit carries its own refrigeration circuit; a CRAH takes chilled water from a central chiller. DX usually suits one or a few rooms, chilled water a site with a chiller plant or a large load.

In-row units and containment

In-row units sit between racks and catch exhaust heat before it mixes with room air; hot-aisle or cold-aisle containment keeps the streams apart. Choose them for dense racks or rooms without a raised floor.

How to specify a precision air conditioner

Net sensible capacity
State the IT heat load and ask for net sensible kW at your return conditions. A total kW figure includes latent capacity the servers do not need.
Inlet temperature target
ASHRAE's 2008 guideline recommended 18 to 27 °C at the server inlet. Later editions exist, so ask the designer which edition and equipment class the room follows, and state the target at the inlet, not the return.
Humidity band
Dhaka's monsoon humidity averages about 82 to 83 percent. Specify a humidity band, and whether you need the optional humidifier and reheat.
Air path
Give the rack layout, floor void height or ceiling plenum, and cable cut-outs. Even air distribution decides whether the capacity reaches the servers.
Failure and restart
Say how many units can fail with the room still in limits, how units restart after a power cut, and where alarms go.
Heat rejection
Say whether heat leaves by air-cooled condenser, dry cooler or chilled water, and where that plant goes. Dhaka has recorded about 42 °C, so ask for capacity at your design temperature.

Rating standards and room standards

ASHRAE 127-2020
The method of rating air-conditioning units serving data centre and IT spaces. The 2007 edition is still cited for an older US test appendix, so ask which edition a datasheet uses.
AHRI 1360-2022
Performance rating of computer and data processing room air conditioners. Ask for the rating of the exact model and airflow configuration quoted.
NSenCOP
The US efficiency descriptor: net sensible cooling in kW divided by total power input in kW. Ask for it, or the same ratio, at your supply conditions.
TIA and Telcordia GR-3160
The TIA data centre infrastructure standard and GR-3160 set requirements for data rooms and telecom spaces. Name the one your operator or licence follows.

What moves the price of a precision air conditioner

  • Net sensible capacity, and DX or chilled water.
  • Humidifier and reheat, which are optional extras.
  • The number of units carried for redundancy.
  • Airflow configuration: down-flow, up-flow, in-row or ceiling.
  • EC fans, controls and monitoring, and the type of heat rejection.

Lead times and delivery

Time to site depends on whether the model and configuration are in stock in Bangladesh or imported to order, on options such as humidifiers and in-row frames, and on clearance at Chattogram. A room already in service usually takes longer, because the change-over has to be planned around running servers. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum in the quote.

We deliver to site anywhere in Bangladesh. The seller installs the units and heat rejection, tests the refrigerant or water circuits and commissions the controls. Temperature and humidity are measured at the server inlets, and a unit failure is tested at full and part load. Handover includes these readings, drawings, manuals, warranty papers and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Net sensible basisWe check that every offer states net sensible kW and power input at the same return conditions.
  • Rating editionWe check that the datasheet names its rating standard and edition, such as ASHRAE 127-2020 or AHRI 1360-2022.
  • Failure case coveredWe check that the offer holds the inlet target with one unit out of service, at full and part load.
  • Restart and alarmsWe confirm in writing how the units restart after a power cut and where their alarms are routed.

Questions buyers ask

Why compare units on net sensible kW?

Because servers give off almost only sensible heat. A total kW figure adds latent capacity, the moisture a unit removes, which servers do not use. Ask every seller for net sensible kW and power input at the same conditions, so the offers compare on what reaches the racks.

What temperature should a server room run at?

Set the target at the server inlet. ASHRAE's 2008 guideline recommended 18 to 27 °C there, and cooling to 21 °C or below usually wastes energy and money. Later editions of that guideline exist, so ask your designer which edition and equipment class the room follows.

How much humidity control does a server room need in Dhaka?

Specify a band, not only a temperature. Excess moisture makes dust stick to fans and heat sinks, and overcooling equipment in humid air can let salt deposits grow on circuitry. With Dhaka's monsoon air, ask for dehumidification and reheat in the offer.

What happens if one unit fails?

Plan for it before you order. BSRIA lists a poor response to a CRAC or chiller failure as a standard problem case and says supply conditions should be validated for foreseeable failures at full and part load. Ask how much spare capacity the design carries, and see the failure test at commissioning.

How soon will I hear back about HVAC systems?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the capacity, where it is needed and by when.
