Buying fan coil units in Bangladesh
A fan coil unit is a small fan and coil that cools one room with chilled water from a central chiller, under its own thermostat. It is chosen for hotels, apartments and other multi-room buildings. It is not a VRF indoor unit, which runs on refrigerant, and it brings in no fresh air, so a separate ventilation system has to.
Fan coil quotes are easy to misread, because capacity changes with water temperature, airflow and entering air. As your fan coil unit supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan sends one room schedule and one set of conditions to verified sellers and compares the answers. The seller installs and commissions the units; Roptan delivers them.
How to specify a fan coil unit
- Sensible load per room
- Size on the room's sensible load first: the unit's sensible capacity must meet or exceed it, and the supply airflow follows from it.
- Airflow margin
- Choose a unit that usually runs below about 75 percent of its maximum rated airflow, for quieter running and better efficiency.
- Water and air conditions
- State chilled water flow and return temperatures and the entering air dry and wet bulb. Chillers commonly send 7 °C and take back 12 °C; warmer water gives less cooling.
- Moisture and condensate
- Dhaka's relative humidity averages about 82 to 83 percent in the monsoon, so condensate flow is large. Size the drip tray and drain, lay drains to falls and keep the pan cleanable.
- Fan speed and control
- Basic units use three fan speeds on an AC motor; EC motors take a 0 to 10 V signal. Say whether a room thermostat or a building management system controls fan and valve.
- Pressure rating
- Ask for the coil pressure test result and maximum working pressure, and check them against the chilled water pressure at the lowest floor.
Test methods and certification
- EN 1397:2021
- The European test method for hydronic fan coil performance, for free-delivery or ducted units up to 120 Pa external static pressure. It does not cover direct expansion coils.
- EN 16583:2022
- The European standard for fan coil acoustic performance. It replaced the 2015 edition in 2022, so a datasheet citing EN 16583:2015 is out of date.
- AHRI 440
- The US certified performance scheme cited for fan coils. Ask for the listing of the exact model, not a general claim of certification.
Lead times and delivery
Time to site depends on whether the models and sizes are in stock in Bangladesh or imported to order, on how many cabinet, coil and motor variants the schedule holds, and on clearance at Chattogram. A schedule with fewer variants is usually quicker to fill. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum in the quote.
We deliver to site anywhere in Bangladesh. The seller fixes the units, connects the water pipes, drains and controls, and commissions each room. Handover includes the coil pressure test results, a unit schedule with locations, manuals, warranty papers and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Questions buyers ask
Is a fan coil the same as a VRF indoor unit?
No. A fan coil cools with chilled water made by a central chiller; a VRF indoor unit runs on refrigerant piped from outdoor units. Refrigerant systems may be more prone to leaks than a hermetically sealed central chiller, while a fan coil building needs a chiller plant.
Should I choose two-pipe or four-pipe?
Two-pipe if rooms only ever need cooling, or only heating, at one time. Four-pipe if some rooms need heating or reheat while others cool, which some hotels and hospitals ask for. Ask the designer which rooms need heat, if any, before you choose.
Why is my fan coil dripping?
Usually the drip tray or drain cannot keep up, or the drain has lost its fall. In Dhaka's monsoon a fan coil makes a lot of condensate. Ask for a pan sized for it, drains laid to falls or a condensate pump, and a way to clean the pan at service visits.
Does a fan coil bring in fresh air?
No. It only adds or removes heat from room air and does not filter dust or volatile organic compounds. Fresh air must come from a separate ventilation system, such as a fresh air handling unit, or a fresh air connection.
How soon will I hear back about HVAC systems?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the capacity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
