Buying trailers in Bangladesh

A semi-trailer has no front axle: much of its weight rests on the tractor's fifth wheel, and landing legs hold it up when uncoupled. A full trailer has front and rear axles and a drawbar. In Bangladesh, container hauliers, contractors, cement and food traders order trailers, much of the demand from container traffic between Chattogram and Dhaka.

Kinds of trailer

Flatbed and curtain-sider trailers

A flat deck for steel, machinery and palletised goods; a curtain-sider adds movable reinforced fabric sides. Choose a curtain-sider for goods that must stay covered but load from the side.

Drop-deck and low-bed trailers

A drop-deck floor steps down once clear of the tractor, for taller loads. A low-bed sits so low that it usually needs electrically powered landing gear. Choose one for tall machinery.

Skeletal container trailers

A chassis with twistlocks that lock into the corner castings of ISO containers, usually 20 or 40 ft long and 8 ft wide. Choose it for port and depot haulage.

Tipper trailers

One end is raised, usually by a hoist at the front, to slide out sand, stone or demolition material. Frame types use a bottom beam; frameless bodies rely on ribs.

Bulk tanker trailers

Dry-bulk tankers for cement, sand, flour and sugar, and liquid tankers. Choose by the product carried and how it is unloaded at your silo or tank.

How to brief a trailer supplier in Bangladesh

Tractor and coupling: Give the tractor model, fifth-wheel height and king pin size: 2 inch (50.8 mm) or 3.5 inch (88.9 mm). The pin must match every tractor that will pull the trailer.
Containers or load: For skeletal trailers, list each container size carried; twistlocks must match the corner fitting layout. Otherwise give load type, size and weight.
Axles and tyres: State axle count, single or dual tyres and any lift axle, with the rated load of axles, suspension and tyres. Confirm the current axle load limit before fixing the axle count.
Brakes and electrics: Larger trailers usually carry air, electric or overrun brakes. Give the tractor's brake system, supply voltage and connector so lines and cables couple.
Steel and corrosion: Name the structural steel, for example to ISO 630-2, bolts to ISO 898, and galvanising to ISO 1461 or a stated paint system under ISO 12944.
Landing gear and deck: Manual or electric landing legs, deck width, floor material and lashing points. Common widths are usually 2.44 m or 2.6 m; confirm what your routes allow.

Coupling, container and safety standards

ISO 337 and ISO 1726: ISO 337 sets the dimensions of the 50 mm fifth wheel coupling pin; ISO 1726 covers mechanical coupling between tractors and semi-trailers. Ask which the trailer's pin follows.
ISO 668 and ISO 1161: Container dimensions and ratings, and the corner and intermediate fittings that twistlocks engage, for each container size carried.
UN Regulations No. 13, No. 55, No. 58 and No. 73: Braking, mechanical couplings, rear underrun and lateral protection. Bangladesh is not a party to the UN 1958 Agreement: use them as design references and for export markets, not as BRTA rules.

What moves the price of a trailer

Axle count and rating: more axles, or axles rated for heavier loads, add steel and running gear.
Running gear bought in: axles, suspension, brakes, tyres and landing gear, by type and rating.
Kind: a tipper hoist, a tanker barrel or a low-bed's heavier frame costs more than a flat deck.
Container fittings: twistlock layouts for several container sizes add parts and setting-out work.
Steel grade, frame depth and plate thickness, and the corrosion system chosen.

Lead times and delivery

There are no reliable lead-time or minimum figures for this trade, so Roptan gives none here. Trailers are usually built to order, and the time depends on the supply of axles, suspension and tyres, whether the design is new or repeated, the number of units and the corrosion finish. The builder hands the trailer over at its yard or your depot, coupled to one of your tractors. Before handover we check the king pin fit, air and electrical connections, brakes, lights, landing gear and twistlock positions. Which king pin size should I order?

The one your tractors' fifth wheels take: 2 inch (50.8 mm) or 3.5 inch (88.9 mm). Check every tractor in the fleet, not just one, since a trailer with the wrong pin cannot couple. ISO 337 covers the 50 mm pin.

How many axles does my trailer need?

Start from the payload and the axle load limit in force, which has changed more than once. A study by the Roads and Highways Department found overloading damaged the Dhaka to Chattogram highway most on two-axle vehicles. Roptan confirms the current limit before the axle count is fixed.

Is a tipper trailer safe on site?

On level, firm ground. An end-dump semi-trailer gives a large payload, but is very unstable when raised on uneven ground. Tell us the ground where it will tip, and ask the builder for the stability limits in writing.

Do trailers need UN Regulation approval in Bangladesh?

No. Bangladesh is not a party to the UN 1958 Agreement, so UN approvals for braking, couplings or underrun protection are not BRTA rules. They serve as design references and for markets that apply UN rules.
