Buying railway track fittings in Bangladesh

Track fittings hold rails to sleepers and to each other: fish-plates, base plates, elastic rail clips, spikes, screws, bolts and the sleepers themselves. In Bangladesh they are bought for railway projects, renewals and repairs, usually by contractors working to the railway's tender, on a network that runs 1,676 mm broad gauge, 1,000 mm metre gauge and dual-gauge lines.

A fitting made for the wrong rail section or sleeper will not go in. As a railway track fitting supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan works from the drawings and specification issued with the tender, sources a verified maker, checks material, hardness, dimensions and coating on each lot, and keeps the records your inspector will ask for. You deal with Roptan only.

Kinds of railway track fitting

Fish-plates

Plates that bolt the ends of two rails together. Their faces taper inwards, so tightening the bolts wedges the rails into line. Welded joints have replaced them on much track, but older lines still use them.

Base plates

Also called tie or sole plates. They spread the rail load over the sleeper, centre the rail and help hold gauge; the tapered underside sets the rail's inward cant. Double-shoulder plates are the current type.

Elastic rail clips

Heavy spring-steel clips that hold the rail in place of spikes. A captive clip is cast into the concrete sleeper when it is made, so the clip and sleeper are ordered together.

Dog spikes and screw spikes

Dog spikes are square with a pointed end and a lugged head that aids removal. Screw spikes go into a bored hole, cost more to make and hold better, with spring washers.

Sleepers

Prestressed concrete, pressed steel, treated timber or plastic composite. Concrete carries higher axle loads and speeds with less upkeep but needs good subgrade and free-draining ballast; timber can rot and split.

How to brief a railway track fitting supplier in Bangladesh

Gauge and rail section
State the gauge, 1,676 mm or 1,000 mm, or dual gauge, and the rail weight per metre. Each fitting is made for one rail section and sleeper type.
Drawing and specification
Send the railway's drawing and material specification issued with the tender, with its revision; the maker works to these.
Sleeper type
Concrete, steel or timber, and for concrete whether the clip is captive. A base plate, spike or clip must match the sleeper it fixes to.
Cant and fixing
State the rail cant set by the base plate, typically one in forty, and the fixing: dog spike, screw spike, bolt or elastic clip.
Steel and bolts
Name the clip steel, for example spring steel to ISO 683-6, the bolt properties to ISO 898, and the hardness range for clips and plates.
Coating
Hot-dip galvanised to ISO 1461, or black and oiled.
Signalled lines
Where track circuits run, fish-plated joints conduct poorly, so ask for bonding wire across the joint or a welded joint.

Standards and references for track fittings

The railway's own drawings
In Bangladesh, the railway's drawings and specification issued with a tender govern the order. The European standards below are references only.
EN 13674-1 and EN 13674-4
Vignole rails of 46 kg/m and above, and from 27 kg/m up to 46 kg/m. Use them to name a rail section where the drawing refers to it.
EN 13145
Wood sleepers and bearers in European practice. Cite it for timber sleepers only when the specification allows it.
ISO 6506-1 and ISO 2859-1
The Brinell hardness test method for steel parts, and lot sampling by acceptance quality limit, which sets how many pieces are checked.

What moves the price of railway track fittings

  • Steel grade and heat treatment: spring steel clips are quenched and tempered, plain plates are not.
  • Part complexity: screw spikes cost more to make than dog spikes.
  • Galvanising, where the specification asks for it.
  • Sleeper match: captive clips cast into concrete sleepers tie the clip order to the sleeper order.
  • Inspection set by the tender: more tests and witnessed checks add time and cost.

Lead times and delivery

There are no reliable lead-time or minimum figures for this trade, so Roptan gives none here. Fittings are usually made to the tender's drawing, so time depends on steel supply, whether dies or patterns exist, heat treatment, galvanising and the inspection the tender sets. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum in the quote.

We deliver to the railway's stores, a contractor's yard or the work site, packed by drawing number and lot. You receive the material certificates, hardness and dimensional records, the galvanising report where ordered, and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Where the tender sets its own inspection, the order follows it.

What we check for this order

  • Drawing and revisionWe check that the maker works from the current drawing revision named in the tender before production starts.
  • Material certificatesWe match the steel certificates to each heat used for clips, plates and bolts.
  • Hardness and dimensionsWe check Brinell hardness and critical dimensions, such as rail seat and bolt holes, on a sample from each lot.
  • Coating and markingWe check galvanising where ordered, and the drawing number and lot on each bundle or box.

Questions buyers ask

Which standard do track fittings follow in Bangladesh?

The railway's own. Bangladesh Railway issues drawings and a material specification with each tender, and the maker works to those. European standards such as EN 13674 are useful references, but do not replace the tender documents. Send the drawing numbers and revision with your enquiry.

Can fish-plated joints be used on signalled track?

Yes, with bonding. Where track circuits or electrification are used, the electrical path through a fish-plate is poor and unreliable, so bonding wire is fixed across the joint, or the rails are welded instead. Tell us whether the line is signalled so the fitting list includes the bonding.

Concrete or timber sleepers?

Follow the specification. Concrete sleepers carry higher axle loads and speeds and need less upkeep, but need a well-prepared subgrade and free-draining ballast. Timber sleepers are usually treated softwood and can rot, split and suffer plate-cutting. The sleeper type also decides the clips, spikes and plates.

Do elastic rail clips need a special sleeper?

A captive clip does: it is installed when the concrete sleeper is cast, so clip and sleeper must be specified and ordered together. Send the sleeper drawing with the clip drawing so the two match, and say who casts the sleepers.

How soon will I hear back about vehicles and auto parts?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
