Buying thermoformed trays in Bangladesh
A thermoformed tray is made from thin plastic sheet fed from a roll: the sheet is heated, drawn into a mould by vacuum or air pressure, often with a plug for deeper shapes, and trimmed from the web. Food, medicine and retail packers in Bangladesh buy trays, clamshells and blister packs to hold, protect and show their products.
A thermoformed tray manufacturer in Bangladesh needs a tool for every design, so your drawing or sample decides most of the job. Roptan sources from verified makers, agrees tool ownership and sample approval in writing, checks food-contact papers where the tray meets food, and inspects each lot before dispatch. You deal with Roptan only.
How to brief a thermoformed tray manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Drawing or sample
- Outside size, depth, cavity count and lid fit, from a drawing or physical sample, because the tool is cut to it.
- Sheet and grade
- PET, PETG, PP or PS, the grade, colour and any recycled content; PET sheet grade usually has an intrinsic viscosity of about 0.70 to 1.00.
- Thickness and weight
- Sheet thickness and tray weight in grams, each with a tolerance; no single norm fits every tray.
- Use temperature
- Chilled, frozen, microwave, oven or hot fill. Have the seller confirm in writing that the material suits it.
- Line fit
- Stack height and clean denesting on your filling line and, for sealed trays, the lidding film it must seal to.
- Food or not
- Say if the tray touches food or medicine, so the right resin and papers come with it.
Standards and papers for thermoformed trays
- 21 CFR 177.1630, 177.1520 and 177.1640
- US food-contact sections for PET, polypropylene and polystyrene. Ask for the resin maker's letter for the sheet actually used.
- Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004 and (EU) No 10/2011
- EU rules: good manufacturing practice, traceability at every stage, migration limits and a declaration of compliance.
- BDS 1912:2016 and BDS 1913:2016
- BSTI's positive list of constituents of styrene polymers in contact with food, and its guide on plastics suitable for food packaging.
- ASTM D1003 and D5276
- Haze for clear trays, and drop testing of filled packs; BSTI has adopted both. Agree which apply in the order.
Lead times and delivery
A tray from an existing tool is usually quicker than a new design, which needs a tool made, samples formed and a trial on your line before bulk. Food-contact papers, a new sheet grade or imported resin can add time. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum, in pieces, in the quote.
Trays are delivered to your plant anywhere in Bangladesh, packed as agreed in the order, with lot labels, the food-contact declaration and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). A 2024 government circular, as reported in the news, lists one-time cups, plates and trays among single-use items to be phased out, so confirm the current rule for your use.
Buying thermoformed trays for export
Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram for trays and blisters bought from abroad, with tool ownership written into the contract. EU duties sit with the EU importer: Regulation (EU) 2025/40, which has applied since 12 August 2026, limits PFAS in food-contact packaging and, from 2030, restricts plastic trays and other plastic packs for fresh fruit and vegetables under 1.5 kg, with national exemptions.
Questions buyers ask
Should we buy pre-formed trays or roll sheet?
Pre-formed trays are made elsewhere and arrive ready to fill, which usually makes changes of size and colour easier. Roll sheet is formed, filled and sealed on your own form-fill-seal line. Without such a line, buy pre-formed trays.
Can PET trays go in the oven or microwave?
Usually not, if they are ordinary clear PET. Clear amorphous PET starts to crystallise when heated above its glass transition, so a tray that will be heated needs a grade made for heating, or another material. Tell us the use and have the seller confirm the temperature in writing.
Who owns the tray tool?
Agree it before the tool is made. The tool is specific to your design and quoted separately, so the contract should say who pays, who owns it, where it is kept and whether it can be moved. Roptan puts this in writing with the seller.
Are thermoformed trays recyclable?
It depends on the design as well as the polymer. Labels, adhesives, inks, coatings, multilayer sheet and food residue all affect sorting, so a tray of one polymer with a compatible lid is usually easier to recycle. Trim scrap from forming is often reground into new sheet.
How soon will I hear back about plastic packaging and film?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
