Buying self-adhesive tape in Bangladesh

A self-adhesive tape is a backing of film, paper, cloth or foil coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive that sticks under light pressure, with no water, heat or solvent. Carton sealing tape, usually on a polypropylene or polyester backing, is the volume product. Factories and warehouses in Bangladesh use it to close shipping cartons; masking, double-sided and electrical tapes do other jobs.

Tape problems show up late: a flap lifts in a hot container, or a roll runs out early. A self-adhesive tape manufacturer in Bangladesh should state adhesion, hold and length on named methods. Roptan sources from verified makers, writes those figures into the order, has the tape tried on your cartons and checks rolls before dispatch.

Kinds of self-adhesive tape

Carton sealing tape

Clear or coloured film tape, usually 48 mm or 72 mm wide, on a polypropylene or polyester backing. Choose it for closing shipping cartons by hand or machine.

Printed carton tape

Carton tape printed with a logo or a handling message. Choose it to mark your cartons; print adds artwork approval and cost.

Masking tape

Paper-backed and removable, for covering areas that should not be painted. Choose it where tape must come off cleanly.

Double-sided tape

Adhesive on both faces. Choose it to join or mount two parts rather than close a flap.

Electrical tape

Vinyl tape that stretches to fit irregular shapes, for insulating wiring. It is tested to ASTM D1000, not to packaging methods.

How to specify self-adhesive tape

Width and length
Width, and metres per roll, counted on sample rolls against the label and the order.
Backing and thickness
Polypropylene, polyester, paper or vinyl, with total thickness in microns and a tolerance.
Adhesive
Acrylic, hot-melt rubber or another system. Ask which suits your cartons and temperature, then test; no type wins everywhere.
Peel, shear and tack
Peel adhesion is the force to break the bond; shear is the hold under a steady load, like a flap pushing up; tack is the grab under light pressure.
Temperature of use
Adhesives usually lose tack in cold and shear hold in heat. Ask for shear holding at the temperatures your cartons meet in store and in transit.
Carton surface
Dusty or oily cartons weaken the bond. Send your own cartons for a tape trial before bulk.
Roll quality
Easy unwind, a core that fits your dispenser, and no telescoping, where layers slide sideways into a funnel.

Standards and tests for a self-adhesive tape manufacturer in Bangladesh

ASTM D5486
Specification for pressure-sensitive tape for packaging, box closure and sealing: a frame for a carton tape order.
ASTM D3330 or ISO 29862
Peel adhesion. Name one method on the order so two sellers' reports can be compared.
ASTM D3654 or ISO 29863
Static shear: whether the tape stays put under a constant load. It is the test for flaps that spring back.
ASTM D3759 or ISO 29864
Breaking strength and elongation of the tape.
PSTC test methods
The Pressure Sensitive Tape Council's manual of test methods. It warns that no test covers every use, so try the tape on your own cartons.

What moves the price of self-adhesive tape

  • Backing film: polypropylene follows resin prices, and Bangladesh imports most of its plastic raw material.
  • Adhesive: the type and the amount coated on the film change the cost per roll.
  • Thickness and width: more film and wider rolls cost more.
  • Metres per roll: compare quotes per metre, not per roll.
  • Printing: colours, artwork and print set-up for printed tape.

Lead times and delivery

Plain tape in standard widths is usually the quickest to supply. Printed tape waits for artwork approval and a print set-up, and special adhesives or sizes take longer. Imported film or adhesive can hold up a run. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum, in rolls, in the quote.

Tape is delivered to your factory or warehouse anywhere in Bangladesh in cartons labelled with width, length, roll count and lot, with the test report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Store it indoors away from heat, since adhesive properties change with temperature, and use older stock first.

Buying self-adhesive tape for export

EPB records exports of self-adhesive tape and strip in rolls, so buyers abroad do source tape here. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram with roll lists and test reports on the method you name. Film-backed carton tape usually does not hinder recycling of corrugated boxes, as the adhesive stays on the backing and comes away with it.

What we check for this order

  • Length per rollWe measure the metres on sample rolls from the lot against the label and the order.
  • Trial on your cartonsWe have the tape applied to your cartons and left under load in warm conditions before bulk is approved.
  • Width and thicknessWe check width and total thickness on several rolls against the agreed tolerance.
  • Roll conditionWe check for telescoping, crushed cores and hard or noisy unwinding before the rolls are packed.

Questions buyers ask

Why do our cartons open in a hot warehouse?

Usually the adhesive loses shear hold in heat, or dust on the carton stops it bonding. Ask for static shear results at the temperature your cartons meet, under ASTM D3654 or ISO 29863, and trial the tape on your own cartons, loaded and kept warm, before bulk.

Which adhesive should we choose?

There is no single answer. Acrylic, hot-melt rubber and other systems behave differently with temperature and carton surface. Tell the seller your cartons and conditions, ask for peel and shear figures on a named method, and choose on a trial, not on a datasheet.

Is there a BSTI standard for packing tape?

We found none in BSTI's current list. Its adhesive standards cover glues, gums and plywood resins, plus a thermal stability test for hot-melt adhesives (BDS ISO 10363). So tape is usually specified by ASTM, ISO or PSTC methods, which Roptan writes into the order.

What width of carton tape do we need?

Carton sealing tape is usually 48 mm or 72 mm wide. Choose by carton size and your dispenser or sealing machine, and ask for a sample of each if unsure. State metres per roll as well, and check the core fits your dispenser.

How soon will I hear back about plastic packaging and film?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
