Buying tarpaulins in Bangladesh

A tarpaulin is a large sheet with reinforced edges and eyelets, made to keep rain and sun off whatever is under it. Sources list its uses as covering loads on open trucks, keeping stacked timber dry, roofing temporary shelters and covering damaged buildings after disasters. Relief agencies buy it as shelter sheeting against a published specification.

Tarpaulins look alike on a quote and differ in weight, weave, coating and UV treatment. Roptan turns your need into figures a tarpaulin manufacturer in Bangladesh can be held to, sources from verified makers, checks a sample against them, and inspects the bales or rolls before they leave.

Kinds of tarpaulin

Woven polyethylene

The common low-cost kind, called polytarp: a loose weave of polyethylene tape with sheets of the same plastic bonded to both faces. Choose UV-treated sheet for outdoor use; untreated sheet soon turns brittle in sun.

PVC tarpaulins

Industrial-grade coated vinyl for heavy use, waterproof with good abrasion and tear resistance, and resistant to oil, acid, grease and mildew. Choose it for heavy industrial cover.

Canvas tarpaulins

Cotton or polycotton that resists water but is not fully waterproof: standing water or poor drainage drips through. Choose it only where it can be pitched to shed rain, not hold it.

Perforated tarpaulins

Mesh sheets with 20 to 70 percent of the area open, to cut wind load. Choose them for scaffolding wraps and printed banners.

Relief sheeting

The ICRC/IFRC relief tarpaulin comes as 4 by 6 m pieces for individual shelters and 4 by 60 m rolls for community shelters, and the agency sheet carries two reinforcing bands with pre-punched fixing holes.

How to brief a tarpaulin manufacturer in Bangladesh

Finished weight
Sellers name tarpaulins by duty, such as heavy duty. Write the finished weight in g/m² with a tolerance, measured to ISO 3801, so the label has a figure behind it.
Weave and coating
State the tape weave count, often 8 to 12 per square inch, where more means stronger, and whether both faces are laminated.
Strength
Ask for tensile strength and elongation to ISO 1421 and tear strength to ISO 4674-1. For its tenders, one agency relief specification asks at least 750 N tensile and 150 N tear.
UV treatment
Untreated PE turns brittle quickly in sunlight. State the UV exposure test, its lamp method and hours, and the strength loss allowed on the finished sheet.
Edges and eyelets
Eyelets are typically 460 mm to 1.5 m apart. Give spacing, eyelet type, plain or reinforced, and hem or band reinforcement at corners and fixing points.
Size and colour
Give finished length and width with tolerances. For shelters, colour matters: the agency tender sheet is white on both faces with black fibres inside, to reflect heat and block light.

Tests and specifications for tarpaulins

EN ISO 1421 and EN ISO 4674-1
Tensile strength and elongation, and tear resistance, of rubber- or plastics-coated fabrics. Ask which method each report used.
EN ISO 2411
Coating adhesion of coated fabrics, in its 2023/2024 edition. Ask for it on PVC-coated cloth, where a peeling coat ends the cover's life.
EN 12641-1:2019
Minimum strength and attachment requirements for tarpaulins on swap bodies and utility vehicles; Part 2 covers curtainsiders. The reference for truck covers sold into the EU.
ICRC/IFRC tarpaulin specification
An agency requirement for agency tenders, dated September 2024: fabric, strength, UV, fire class D, s2, d2 under EN 13823, marking and baling. Other buyers may name it as their own purchase specification.

What moves the price of a tarpaulin

  • Finished weight: more polymer per square metre usually costs more.
  • Coating and treatment: lamination on both faces and the level of UV stabiliser.
  • Edges: reinforcing bands, hems and the number of eyelets or fixing holes.
  • Size and finish: finished dimensions, welds, printing and marking.
  • Packing and freight: bales or rolls, and the shipped weight and volume.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on the material, size and finish. A custom colour, a large roll width, printing, recycled-content rules and laboratory UV and strength tests add time; a standard weight and size the maker already runs is quicker. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum per size and colour in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers tarpaulins in bales or rolls by truck to your yard, depot, site or warehouse, with the packing list, any lab reports ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying tarpaulins for export

Export quotes are FOB Chattogram (Chittagong). Classification needs care: textile tarpaulins sit under HS heading 6306, but a woven polyethylene sheet laminated with plastic may be classed in Chapter 39, among articles of plastics, because Section XI excludes plastic-laminated fabrics. Your customs broker decides the line, and the certificate of origin follows it.

What we check for this order

  • Weight on a cut pieceWe weigh a cut piece of known area against the stated g/m² and its tolerance before bulk is baled.
  • Weave and coatingWe look for gaps, missing tapes and uneven coating across the sheet, which become the first leaks and tears.
  • Eyelets and bandsCount, spacing and reinforcement of eyelets or fixing holes against your drawing, at corners and along each band.
  • A UV report with its methodWe check the UV report names the lamp method and hours and measured strength loss on the finished tarpaulin, not a lab sheet.

Questions buyers ask

What does heavy duty mean on a tarpaulin?

It is a trade label, not a test result. Ask for the finished weight in g/m², tensile and tear strength with their test methods, and the UV test; those figures can be checked on a sample and in a lab.

PE or PVC tarpaulin?

Woven PE is the common low-cost choice for general cover and shelters, and lasts outdoors only when UV-treated. PVC-coated cloth is industrial grade: heavier, waterproof, and resistant to oil, grease and mildew, for heavy-duty cover.

How long will a tarpaulin last in the sun?

It depends on UV treatment and weight. Untreated PE turns brittle quickly. For its own tenders, the agency relief specification requires a 1,500-hour UV test with no more than 5 percent strength loss, and the agency catalogue expects at least four years in harsh tropical conditions.

Can you supply the ICRC/IFRC relief tarpaulin?

The agencies buy it under International Purchase Frame Agreements with validated manufacturers, so a maker outside those agreements is unlikely to supply the agencies directly. Other buyers can use the published specification as their own, and Roptan checks a sample against it.

How soon will I hear back about tents and camping gear?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
