Buying sleeping bags in Bangladesh
A sleeping bag is an insulated bag of shell fabric, fill and lining, closed with a zip and rated by the temperatures at which an adult sleeps warm enough. Outdoor brands and retailers buy them alongside tents for the camping season. Bangladesh exports them under their own customs line, HS 9404.30, among bedding rather than with tents.
A label temperature means little unless a laboratory measured it on the same model and fill. Roptan writes the rating, fill and fabrics into the order, finds a sleeping bag manufacturer in Bangladesh among its verified makers, asks for the rating report on your bag, and checks fill and packing before shipment.
How to brief a sleeping bag manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Temperature rating
- State the comfort and limit temperatures you need, tested to EN ISO 23537-1 on the finished model in the size you buy.
- Fill
- Fill type and weight in grams. For down, add fill power and down content, each with its test method, because the US and European methods use different samples and conditioning.
- Shell, lining and underside
- Name shell and lining fabrics, and say whether the underside is insulated: body weight crushes fill there, which is why some bags carry a sleeve for a pad.
- Zip and size
- Zip length and side, left or right, the inner length, and the packed size in its sack.
- Humidity and packing
- Moisture, from outside or sweat, cuts insulation sharply. Bags waiting in Bangladesh's humid stores should be packed dry with desiccant, in a loose storage sack rather than compressed.
Standards and papers for sleeping bags
- EN ISO 23537-1:2022
- Requirements for sleeping bags, Part 1: Thermal, mass and dimensional requirements for sleeping bags designed for limit temperatures of -20 °C and higher. For adult leisure bags; not military, expedition, children's or babies' bags.
- EN ISO 23537-2:2023
- Requirements for sleeping bags, Part 2: Fabric and material properties, with labelling provisions. It replaced the 2016 edition; labs usually test to both parts.
- Responsible Down Standard
- A voluntary Textile Exchange standard: third-party audits from the farm, live plucking and force-feeding prohibited, and chain-of-custody papers. Ask for the current certificate covering your fill.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100
- Tests every component for harmful substances, with stricter limits the closer it sits to skin. It can cover shell, lining, fill and zip tape.
Lead times and delivery
Time depends on the fill and the tests. Imported down or a special synthetic fill, a new pattern, extra sample rounds and a laboratory rating test on the finished model all add time; a maker's current model in stock fill is quicker. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum per model and colour in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers sleeping bags in sealed cartons by covered truck to your store or warehouse, with the packing list, the rating and fill reports ordered, and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying sleeping bags for export
Sleeping bags travel under HS 9404.30, in Chapter 94 with bedding, because the textile section excludes Chapter 94 articles; your customs broker confirms the line. Quotes are FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), with the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, the EN ISO 23537 reports, and RDS papers where down is claimed. Duty in each destination is confirmed at quote time.
Questions buyers ask
Which temperature goes on the label?
The heated-manikin test gives a comfort temperature, for a standard adult woman sleeping comfortably, and a limit temperature, for a standard adult man curled up and just not cold. The zone between the two is usually the buying guide. Any extreme figure is for survival only: never sell on it.
Is EN 13537 still valid?
No. It was withdrawn in 2016 and replaced by EN ISO 23537. Ask for Part 1 (2022 edition) for thermal, mass and dimensions, and Part 2 (2023 edition) for fabric and material properties. Labels and contracts that cite EN 13537 are out of date.
Down or synthetic for a humid climate?
Synthetic fill takes in little water and keeps some warmth when damp. Down is lighter for the warmth, but a soaked down bag may insulate worse than none. For tropical use or long storage in humid stores, synthetic is usually the safer choice.
Does a sleeping bag need the US mattress flame test?
No. The US mattress flammability standard, 16 CFR 1632, excludes sleeping bags from its definition of a mattress. State the destination's own requirements for sleeping bags instead.
How soon will I hear back about tents and camping gear?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
