Buying awnings in Bangladesh

An awning is a fabric or rigid cover on a light frame, fixed to a building to shade windows, shop fronts and terraces and keep rain off. Covers are usually woven acrylic, polyester or cotton canvas, or vinyl on polyester, over aluminium, iron or steel. Homes and shops use them, and retractable ones fold back against the wall when not needed.

Kinds of awning

Drop arm and side awnings

A roller tube with spring-loaded side arms over a window, worked by motor, crank or tape pull; traditional styles with sides retract by rope and pulley. Sides shade east- and west-facing windows. Choose them for windows.

Rigid aluminium awnings

Formed aluminium in many colours, usually finished in baked-on enamel, common on homes and shops. Choose them for a permanent cover that does not retract.

Open-style folding arm awnings

Folding arms on a torsion bar fixed into wall, soffit, fascia or roof brackets, which spread the load into the structure. Choose them for terraces that need shade only part of the day.

Full cassette awnings

A folding arm awning without a torsion bar: an aluminium extrusion interlocks with the brackets and passes the cantilevered load into the structure. Choose it as the newer alternative to the open style.

How to brief an awning manufacturer in Bangladesh

Width, projection and arms: Give width and projection in metres and the number of arms. A folding arm awning reaches about 5 m out, and one unit normally spans no more than about 7 m; wider fronts take coupled units.
Fabric: Fibre, weight in g/m², water-repellent and flame grades, and whether the cover must be waterproof or only water resistant. Solution-dyed acrylic is the usual folding arm fabric.
Frame and finish: Aluminium, iron or steel, and the finish: powder coat or baked-on enamel, with colour code.

Standards and tests for awnings

EN 13561:2015: Performance and safety requirements for awnings fitted outside buildings. For retractable awnings you state the wind-resistance class and a test confirms it; the wind resistance of fixed awnings is outside its scope.
EN 1932:2013: The wind-load test for complete retractable units, including folding arm, pivot arm, vertical and pergola awnings; fixed awnings can be assessed by calculation. Ask for the report on the model, width and projection ordered.
Fabric tests: For PVC-coated polyester, tensile strength to ISO 1421 and tear to ISO 4674-1; UV ageing in a xenon-arc chamber to ISO 4892-2; all on the fabric lot used, plus the flame grade you name.

Questions buyers ask

Is an awning waterproof?

Usually not fully. Folding arm awnings are described as water resistant, not waterproof, while retractable patio cover systems are described as waterproof. Say which you need, and ask for the fabric's water-repellent grade.

Which wind class should we ask for?

For a retractable awning, you set it from your site and the local wind, and the maker confirms it by an EN 1932 test on the model and size. Fixed awnings fall outside that test and can be assessed by calculation. Wind tolerance depends on width, projection, arm count and material, and a weak wall or fixing can fail even when the awning passes.

Does an awning block all UV?

No. Shade structures such as awnings do not give complete UV protection, because UV also arrives by scattering and reflection from nearby surfaces. An awning cuts direct sun, not all exposure.

Do you supply camping awnings?

Camping awnings are tent parts: some tents use extra poles to turn doorways into awnings, and cabin tents carry one at an end. EN 13561 covers awnings fitted to buildings, not these. For tent awnings, see camping tents.
